I actually kinda dig the art of this one, but yeah...not going to touch this one. Too many problems.
Re: PIXELS Bicycle Style Playing Cards 8-bit retro - Live on
Hey guys, this is Alex, I created the deck, and I just stumbled upon this post.
I actually don't mind the comments, this is my first go-round in producing these cards, and didn't know my project looked so bad.
So the reason I posted "bicycle style" is because I didn't know what else to call them? I contacted USPCC and their minimum order was 2,500 decks which honestly I wasn't confident I could achieve, so I was looking for a manufacturer that can produce the cards with a lower quantity order.
Anyways, seeing the good response so far with backers, I'm considering printing them with USPCC. I'm going to be posting that on the updates pretty soon, as soon as I finish talking with them about the quotation on the cards.
Other than that what else is wrong with it? Please let me know, I worked really hard on this deck, and I'm putting my everything into it. There's no way I want to see it fail.
Thanks guys!

There is no conflict with the upcoming Pixels movie (about video game characters)?
Re: PIXELS Bicycle Style Playing Cards 8-bit retro - Live on
Well, after finding this forum, I was able to go through a lot of topics covered here, and its been a TON of help. I started working on this deck since march, and have been trying to learn the dos and a donts from other projects on kickstarter. But being new to the card community, thats all I had.
So anyways, I posted an update to the project two days ago. I dont think Ill be able to print with Bicycle, given how their minimum is 10k-12k, but I am aware that quality is king(be it card decks or ANY product for that matter), so although Im going with MPC for now, I am trying to go with the best available choice given the funding. I personally REALLY love the art on the deck. So even if it fails, Id like to give it a second try, and if it succeeds, Im planning on delivering the best quality possible, even if it takes all the funds. I just want to get my feet on the water as an artist, and hopefully be able to bicycle (or even go with Legends or another runner up) the next deck. Just having people hear about this deck and hopefully gain momentum for a bigger and better second one, would be the best reward.
So yes, I was and Im still a little bit intimidated because this is my first card project, but I plan to deliver the best regardless of what ends up happening. Id still really appreciate any other suggestions you might have, I already fixed the dumb "bicycle style" mistake(english is my second language so I didnt know theyre just called playing cards, and didnt know if there was a special name for these kind of cards with the courts, jokers, etc) Just wishing Id found this forums a little sooner..
Any other help or just comments? Id really appreciate you guys help, since this community is solid and theres some real pros here. Thanks

To my knowledge, no. Im no lawyer, but I reasearched the topic, and names of movies cannot be copyrighted. They can be trademarked but only if it becomes a series, (i.e. Harry Potter, Hunger Games, etc.). From what Ive seen so far Pixels is the first movie, and its based off a french stand alone short film (no book series, no sequels) written in 2010. So on the trademark end it looks good.PrincessTrouble wrote:There is no conflict with the upcoming Pixels movie (about video game characters)?
There is the MPAA registration for movies which is mandatory and new movies have to check before naming their new film, but this only holds weight in the film industry. It does not apply to any industry outside of it.

The art on the cards is actually quite nice. The back design is very nice, it has a good looking art deco vibe to it. When research and preperations are done better, I would might actually back this.

I dream of a world where wars are fought only by having dance offs. I also dream that a Finnish playing card designer would exist. The former seems more likely to happend.

Got it, and totally get that - I do feel like I did my research though, that's why I'm still wondering what's missing? I changed the bicycle thing on the title, but other than that, I am fully aware that bicycle is a brand, the only issue was I didn't know what to call them. (super noob mistake I know)
That said, here's a run through of what I did prior to launching. I did contact various suppliers (including USPCC, which is why I didn't go with them, the order was too big) , printed a deck prior to starting the kickstarter, I learned about the different qualities of the cards, etc. I did my work with the decks, and spent about a month preparing for the kickstarter itself. I've already contacted USPS and informed myself on bulk shipping, I know where I'm getting the shipping supplies from and got the package weights down(for cost considerations). I know there's always a lot to learn the first time you do something, and I'm sure there's things that will come up that that will be unprecendented. But I think I prepared on everything that you're supposed to, what am I missing here guys?

Oh! And there was an upgrade last week to 310gsm linen card stock, I didn't like the 300 at all! Thought I'd let you all know. I'll post pictures as soon as I receive the new deck.
