Midnight BOWL-A-RAMA Decks - Funded!

Unread post by RandyButterfield »

Hey everyone,

My next solo project will be launching on Kickstarter this coming Thursday, Noon EDT. After doing a lot of baroque and elegant type of designs, I wanted to change it up and do something FUN! The Midnight Bowl-A-Rama Decks will be printed and fulfilled by Legends. I hope you like the change-of-pace from the norm! Max released an article earlier today that has some more info:

http://www.maxplayingcards.com/en/2015/ ... ds-strike/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks! Randy

Definitely not my style, but it's just goofy enough that I can see myself backing this project. The quality is definitely there, and a bowling theme intrigues me. Consider me in on Tursday. :P

The bowling jacket on the king is a nice touch if I do say so.

This one really strikes my fancy. I'll likely do a split half-brick: two to play with, two for the collection, and the remainders for spares.

Definitely not my style and not my sport. My friend always invites me to bowling and I always pass unless he's paying  But wow, this is fresh! I might just get a split brick.

A couple more days until Launch!

The Black Deck and Red Deck will each have separate sets of Face Cards. Here's a couple graphics that show what will be modified between the two - different Team Names and PIP Layouts for the Numbers, different outfits and colors for the Courts.

Thanks! Randy

At first glance I wasn't sure if I liked them - but the pin/pip placement is so clever! (Pinps?)

(The thoughts that ran through my head on this one)

So someone posts something about a new deck coming out. Its a bowling deck that has X and Y.

And personally the first thing that jumps into my head is, thats just stupid. It'll never work. Why would you even bother. This is going to be a terrible stupid mess.

Then I see the tuck somewhere and I'm not really crash hot on it, yeah ok its not terrible but its cheesy and just not my taste.

Then I see whos doing it and think What! After all the people loved Draconian so much why trash your reputation on something so very stupid.

Then I see the actual deck...

Oh. Hmm. Ok. Well..... It IS kind of clever... and quirky... And the colours are the ones I usually find garish... But they ... They really.. kinda work here... and I usually hate that lines in the background thing.... but it really works well to bring back bowling memories with the kids... even is bordered .... I would normally hate a pip design like this but its also clever and interesting... and that orange back is kinda interesting.... Its all kinda something... Kinda pretty... Kinda fun... Kinda......

Ahhhhhh!!!! God damn it! I like it. And the more I look at it the more I like it.

Its nothing like my taste or style. It has endless things I would usually bitch and moan about (inside my head) but somehow Randy has scrambled all these elements together into something that just manipulates my own opinions on things.

I think this could go gangbusters because of that. It seems a lot of people are in a similar boat of "Oh no, thats just not for me, but its ..Something.... Here have my money!...

He should be proud of this deck.

He should be proud of this deck.

Hey Hudson,

I am VERY proud of this design!! I don't worry about my reputation with Deck designs. If I did, I probably wouldn't have ever done a Fabergé Egg theme, or worked with BM Poker Mike on the original UC Deck. I look at Deck designing this way - as long as I'm enjoying it, I'll keep doing it. The day it becomes a chore, I'm done. If I had to design the fancy, elegant, baroque... designs over and over again, I would go insane and be finished quickly! I think it's necessary to throw in an odd theme every now and then. Luckily my day job (http://www.motivemktg.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) affords me that wiggle room to take the gamble on the unique designs.

This section from yesterday's Kardify reveal sums it up pretty nicely:

"The short answer for why I decided on a Bowling themed design is I enjoy Bowling. Part of the long answer is to challenge myself and stay sharp. Designing Playing Cards is a creative outlet for my hectic, deadline-driven day job. During the day, I have the honor to work with some of the best Spirits, Wine and Beer brands from around the world. A lot of the projects are creative, but a good number of them are limited to specific Brand Standards and extremely tight deadlines. Designing Playing Cards at night allows me the chance to take my time and create something unique.

Over the past couple years, I've noticed that my Contract / Freelance Deck assignments are mostly going for the high-end Luxury vibe. I enjoy doing those type of designs, but if I'm doing Luxury designs for assignments, the last thing I want to do for a personal design is something with a similar feel. That's a recipe to become lazy and complacent! So, I chose to take a chance and create a design around a fun Bowling theme. It was some of the most fun I've had designing a Deck!"

Here's another image from the KS Campaign. I thought a Metal Coin didn't make any sense for this design, so there are custom Wooden Nickels!! They will be Add-Ons of $6 per Set of Four. This design has a LOT of personal history / info spread throughout, even the Wooden Nickels. The cities and copyright dates on the backs correspond to locations I've resided in and the dates I was born or moved there (I had to leave out Mt. Pleasant, MI - my College town).

thanks, Randy

I love bowling. I actually bowled in a league all through law school just to get a break from things, and I still have my bowling shoes and two balls (bowling balls - one primary ball and one ball to pick up spares). As others have mentioned, the pips laid out like pins are genius. I think the black deck is especially cardistry friendly as well: the crowns in the corners will add a nice element to fans, the irregular border will look good in spreads, the circular bowling ball and pins design in the center of the card will look great in spins, the green back is an underutilized color (so many decks just do the blue-red-black-white-gold combo), and the colorful courts and back design should pop in performances. I score this deck a 300!

I was also in a bowling league and our team was "The Pin Pals" (borrowed from The Simpsons). We all had matching shirts with nicknames- I was Banana Split, my friend Matt was Cold Turkey lol. Anyway, living in Boston, our league was candle pin (google it) which IMO is way better than 10 pin! But I'll still pledge for this deck :)
