Very true, it is a bit too roundy to be art deco and would fit art nouveau more, but there are elements of the back, especially corners that would work. It's more like elements of art deco and art nouveau than an art deco deck. Yet the courts have a traditional middle ages sort of look with elements of art nouveau I suppose? Like I said, this is not the art deco I was looking for and you're right the name might throw people off in both directions.Lotrek wrote:I think the terms "Art Deco" and "Art Nouveau" should be used more carefully. The only Art Deco element in this deck is the font in the word "Moderne"
Yea, all the courts are wearing gloves of some fashion. I think it's the finger pose that he may be talking about. They're not very natural. Maybe they all have a secret fascination with puzzle boxes or something.jerichoholic wrote:What's wrong with the queens hands? They are apparently wearing gloves.

The first thing that occurred to me was Islamic Geometric art.ecNate wrote:Very true, it is a bit too roundy to be art deco and would fit art nouveau more, but there are elements of the back, especially corners that would work. Art Deco and Art Nouveau are similar with some gray area between the two. My interpretation of them is that Art Deco is mainly made of geometric shapes and Art Nouveau is mainly made of organic shapes like plant and vine forms. I have heard from other sources as well about whether the design is "Art Deco" enough. I was on the fence about whether or not to use Art Deco in the title or not when I was designing it. After further consideration I have updated the photos on Kickstarter and the website with Art Deco removed and the deck now titled Moderne Playing Cards. It's more like elements of art deco and art nouveau than an art deco deck.
The Queen's hands and Joker's face bother me.
I used photo reference for the hands and other elements of the court cards. I used natural proportions of the figures, but with geometric details. There is some info on the design process on the website here: http://modernecards.com/design-process/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .What's wrong with the queens hands?
I'd like to see more variation in the poses of the court cards.
I repeated elements of the court cards where possible, such as the poses, hands, etc. for a design consistency. There really needs to be more variation on the court cards because looking at just one royals suit it feels like you've seen them all.
