REDUX Playing Cards now LIVE on IndieGoGo

Hello everyone,
I'm super psyched to say that REDUX Playing Cards are now LIVE! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/redu ... /x/8488922

It's a bit of a bummer that they're on Indiegogo instead of Kickstarter, but you go with what you get.

This is my first time creating a playing card project, so I'm hoping to start small and try to get a minimum funding goal reached before thinking of any bells and whistles.

Here are some photos:

This is my first project, so I undoubtedly have lots to learn.

I hope you find this an interesting deck, and perhaps one you would like.

Cheers,

Why did you go with gogo instead of KS?

You have determination and prescience. Good luck. IndieGoGo is a hard sell.

You have to be over 18 to be on KS

Looks pretty cool, too bad it likely won't fund on Indiegogo. Why not get your parents to help you out with KS? It would work out much better for you. Also $1 for international shipping seems rather sketchy.

@jericholic,
I considered the parents for KS, but we needed to give the SSN. Security is pretty high in our household, so we weren't comfortable.
The one dollar shipping is from MPC directly, so I don't think it's off.

Oh well if MPC is shipping that's fine. I think Kickstarter can be trusted so I don't see what the issue is. What really matters is if you really want to see this succeed or not.

@jerocholic, thanks for your views!
Unfortunately, the decision is ultimately not up to me; my main goal now is to work with what I have and try to promote what is there.

Indiegogo has been around for years. I've supported an Indiegogo campaign and it went very smoothly.

I like what you've done here wildwildcat. Great colours and it's good to see some younger faces in the courts than usual. The clothing is wild while still having the formal elements. Very cool.

The only thing is that the transitions between the two ends of the courts could flow into each other a little more. Perhaps you could make the horizontal join where the patterns meet into something a little more sinuous or angled?

Thanks for your support!
@Dazzleguts, I'm glad you find it fun! Regarding the art, if I read right, you think a smoother transition would help them out? I can definitely work on evening out the distinction between the two court halves, if that is what you mean.
Cheers,
Owen

Yes, that's what I meant. The Queen of Hearts already has an nice interweaving between the two halves, while the King of Clubs has patterns which just stop at the border between the two halves.

I think that your deck is one that you should just print out of your own funds and give it out to your friends. Not too many people will be interested in buying a deck which are basically illustrations of your friends. Also your courts are vastly out of proportion.

I love the pips but I don't like that blue rough-sketchy-outline look on the courts. And that hand on the KoC doing the peace sign, what volantangel said, vastly out of proportion. Looks like a photobomber is hiding under the king's garment.

Thanks for your thoughts! It's definitely not something people are used to, so I understand that it might not be something people would like.

With age comes skill, knowledge and wisdom. I think if you took a break from this, stepped back and took a good look, you could see what needs to be improved. Your enthusiasm is awesome, never lose that.
When I was your age I had already put out around ten different tricks or manuscripts. A few good ideas most bad. You learn from these mistakes. This deck is not ready for the public.

At playingcardforum everyone, including myself, gave you a lot of advice on what needs to change, but I don't know if you took it to heart. I think if you keep pursuing art and magic you will in the future be able to produce an awesome deck.

@BenMorrisRains,
Absolutely. It's very crucial I see what I am doing wrong, learn from them, and try to improve.

I'm not sure if I'm there yet, however.

The following is a KoC much more in line with the traditional one.

Does this solve the proportion issue?

Honestly, the color scheme, wobbly lines, and the art in general puts me off entirely.

It's hard for me to look at and say "Yeah I'll drop money on that."

I think everyone is trying to be nice and beat around the bush about it. It's just not up there with the decks you see being funded everyday.

Im in agreement with ben, just not up to par for me. Lotsa more work to be done and refined, but i like your enthusiam.

Haha maybe your friends would have grown up by then, and not look a little like babies/kids stuck on a king's body

@Volantangel and @BenMorrisRains,
I do apologize that my current work is not at the standard you currently see. No doubt I'm going to have to invest even more time to make this something acceptable and aesthetically pleasing.

I also agree that praise is less useful if it does not delve into the center of the issue

Perhaps you could help out by isolating a few key factors that really drag the deck down?

I'm sure my pip placement has been symmetrical, and am in the process of smoothing out line and adjusting the courts. How else can the design be improved, or sharpened?

Even when sharp, it needs more appropriate eyeballs... a supporting adult needs to kick down a SSN and KS it.

This deck has a lot of potential I must say.

Here are the things I would do:
1. Use a vector based program instead of raster based
2. Fix this wobbly lines (body + sword)
3. the symmetry of the hats aren't correct.

I think if you take all the members suggestions and refine your technique you will have something amazing.

Thanks @Alvinhy. I got started with Illustrator, and I'm working on evening things out, as well as straightening the overall image.
I am trying my best to see how I can incorporate the different points people are presenting.
Thanks to everyone for heir input!

Hello everyone,
I'm just getting started with Illustrator, but I cleaned up the lines and color scheme in the meantime.
*I know the hats aren't right; I'll need to adjust that.

What are your thoughts on this tweaked version?

I actually liked the wild big bodies and little heads. They made this deck very distinct and had a bit of the psychedelic/surfer thing going on. Also think there's nothing wrong with the youthful looking heads sitting on top of those waves of colour. There's even historical precedent with many royals being very young when they inherited their power (though they often had a Regent). Certainly make the lines and design smoother, but I hope you don't stray too far from your original vision wildwildcat.
