Hi everyone,
Here is a new deck I am working on.
New deck Sunrise is dedicated to Japan.
What's your opinion?

Is that better?

Love the Japanese theme - the Top middle back is lovely, but I also like the snazzy borders on the right hand one too.

I love the pip design and the ink and watercolour feel to the art - and the revised queen works much better - (the big blob in the middle of the card made by the two fans really doesn't look great.)

BUT... the grey background is a killer. The lilac of the backs might work though...

@vovkalex - Like the top middle for the border and I also like some of the elements and the color of the fins in the top left one. Your QoS is an improvement. You can have the fans you just need to show some hands. Did that rhyme? I see you have custom suits in your indices. YOu have a lot of negative space. You might want to put a suit indicator on the top right of the card since you have custom courts...

Yeah 4 indexes could work, or maybe bing some of the lillies and lutus theme from the back onto the faces?

I really like how this one is shaping up. You nailed it w/ the QoS. The hands look a bit too large though.

The illustrations are simply brilliant, but perhaps lose the grey background, there are a ton of japanese material out there for reference. Its not quite my area of expertise, ill have to take a look before giving you any advice.

100% agree with this. I''m not a huge fan of asian style art, but I'll still keep an eye on it. You might change my mind.

Gray background will not. This is only the beginning of the work - a sketch.

Background for the ladies. Which is better?

Hoho simple ! Why not 4 different backgrounds one for each season for each suit ?

Another option. Your opinion?

I'm not a fan of 4 corner indices, particularly not when they're boxed in/framed. If you mirror the background to get the lamp (or whatever it is) on the other side, it would balance out the card better.

Also I think that last one is my favorite background of the 4 shown, still not sure about which color/shade I like better.

That looks good. I'd advise you to move the indices (and probably the whole frame) out closer to the edges. That will not only make fans look better, but make it easier for people playing card games to see what the cards are (less need to spread them out in their hands). I'm guessing you want to show off the background behind the frame, but I think it's a bit too intricate for a background. Perhaps just extending the background inside the frame, while maintaining the colors as they are now?

I love the direction this deck is moving into!

However in this last image the index and pip get a bit lost in the background.
Personally I would keep the index within the scrollwork border for clarity, but make the whole design wider to move the index closer to the edge of the card.

@vovkalex - You honestly like this? Your indices are where they need to be, but it will be hard to read and you don't have a suit indicator for the non-tradistional courts. Think about what will you see if this card is 3 feet away. I'll remind you your custom pip needs to be more black at least 51% and that's if it's not in a background. Your background distorts the suit currently...

Gotta drop the stereotypically Asian font. Stay with the more legible one.

Haha ive seen much worse, this one isnt that bad

I always wish that the smaller pips were solid, as its easier to read, and most of the intricate pattern gets lost in the print anyways. What do yall think?

Good idea. From up close it's easy to tell what it is. But it's crucial for designers to take a step back or at least put the card design at arms length to make sure everything is easy to read.

I'd love to see them actually have the font produced calgraphically on a large scale using traditional materials and techniques, then scan the results and scale down / tidy up in PS.
THen you'd have something culturally sensitive, relevant and keep that specialised edge.

Butas Kai says it's not all that bad lol (Not like when you see a deck with Comic Sans or Papyrus!)

Love the white border, but I would not put the indices in it. It makes it a bit too hard to read at a glance. Like the lamp, just keep it opposite the indices for balance.
love both backs, more particle to the coi fish, but that is because of my tatoos.
