Draplin Design Co. "Thick Lines Edition" - from Deckstarter

Aaron’s Thick Lines hypnotically transport us to an atmosphere that “smells” like Boogie Nights, American Hustle, funky disco music, thick lapels and lot’s of partying.
A playful design that almost spits out waves of funky sound when you shuffle, cut, and deal.

Neat tuckbox, but holy crap, $25 for a deck!

The box contraption thing is interesting. However, the design doesn't really compell me to spend $25 for a single deck.

I like this more than the other one. But I don't know why he couldn't just make the courts two-way. He was THAT close to making it two-way.

Very disco-funky. Reminds me of the old Caldor logo (am I aging myself??).

BTW what happened to the regular [img] code? How do a post a pic without it being huge?

This isn't terrible, but definitely not $25. Looks like This deck starter would never really take off.

Oh, c'mon! How can you not like it with that cool Magicpak thingimajig and limited to 750 decks, $25 isn't that bad. This deck could have been perfect if it came with a hint of porn.

Managed to have a chat with Aaron Draplin about his design background, his work, designing the Thick Lines deck and his advice to aspiring designers and artists.

I wasn't a fan of the deck at first.. but appreciate it more after understanding what he wants to achieve and the motivation behind the design.

It's rather off putting the list of backers includes how much each has pledged. But at the same time it offers transparency to make sure no funny business happens during funding.

Backer pledges might be transparent, but shipping cost sure aren't... total cost with shipping is $30 for a deck (domestic) - yawzaa!! It appears at the current trajectory that the fan base will fund the project at that deck price too.

I like the design of the faces quite a bit. I like the design of the back, although it's easy to see how, after a little use, the typical discoloration on the edges will distract from the boldness of this deck.

Even so, that price... ouch.

I imagine that this deck is going to be funded more by fans of this artist than by fans of playing cards, although I realize I may be misreading the situation. Even so... $30 per deck? Too rich for my blood on this one.

Let's get serious folks. I somehow thought they would pull this off, but the other deck ("Millman") which is just fugly has sold 25 copies. That's it! They are already dead and they haven't even gotten started. They say "you can throw them" (seriously!). This is an epic fail, and I forgot to mention that they said that you can play poker or build a house of cards. I wish that I was kidding, but not...

I think the hype was just too much. They built it up to be something it surely is not. Some people, weak-minded, fat wallets, etc., believe the hype no matter what the card actually looks like. The "cool" sleeve is nice but that and the deck artwork just dont constitute a $25 pricetag, even if it is a limit of 750 decks. It almost looks like they're trying to add a new level of minimalist decks.

Oh, I agree. I guess they thought that their fanboy base was going to carry them to this 'golden' height of controlling the Playing Card market. As of about an hour ago they have sold 25 of the Millman deck and around 80 of the Draper (sp?) deck. That's just so f'ing lame it's not even funny. Well, I don't know - it *is* funny! The point is that they have delayed this for almost a year, originally scheduled to launch in December, then announced they were putting it off until March to "improve" it, spent another unknown sum of money for that fancy user interface they paid someone an ungodly amount of money to create, and then missed that deadline again and announced it would slip to April 26th. Then it slipped another month and the new 'live' date was May 26th. Even then they still missed by another two days, and look where they are now. Seriously? They have sold a total of just over 100 decks period, that's it! Only 25 of one, and they have only 10 days left to sell the other 990 decks or toss them in the shredder I guess - no wait - heck, what am I thinking? Those will be their June or July "Deck of the Month Club" deck. Can't waste them, that would be stupid. Let's use them to fill in part of the huge hole they made in their financial statement. And the other one that is "selling" - it has sold less than 100 copies, again - $25 + shipping, basically $30 for one deck. What will they do with the other 900 if they don't sell them in the next 10 days? I guess we can look forward to them forcing them down peoples' throats as their July "Deck of the Month" deck. Damn, it's almost enough to make you feel sorry for them - not!

That's what I'm wondering. I noticed the owner of EPCC is one of the backers... so maybe EPCC is printing these. The packaging looks like it should hold a 1980s atari game not a 2014 deck of cards.

Hahaha mike you got D&D down to a T. Wait you guys are believing that they produced only 750/1000 of these decks ? After they produced 10000 s&m reprints ?

No in all honesty, it's at least a 2500 run. 750 produced w the fancy useless box. The rest would go on art of play, deck of the month, and the variety boxes.

They gave away almost 3,000 of these decks to designers at HOW Designer Live last month, these 750 are what's left I guess. In other words, these could very well be printed at USPCC.

Not sure if it was 1 of each deck or a random deck, but definitely a true story. Makes $25 even more ludicrous.

Basically not going to buy anything being sold by D$D.

I feel like we're paying for the fancy pull tab box... which I don't want. A box in a box? And a $25 price tag? Do the Bucks know their target audience? I guess it's not me.

It's $25 cos someone has to pay for the hundreds of free Draplin and Millman decks that Dan & Dave gave away at HOW Design Live 2014.

Yeah, and as of right now they just passed 100 of them pledged (sold?) on their website for this deck. Of course that's better than the 30 they have sold of the red "Millman" one. Damn, this is going to be an epic #FAIL

I just got another plaintive message from them by email asking me to "please hurry" to get mine before they run out of the 970 decks left of 1000 for those (Millman ones). They talk like these are already made, so if they don't fund I suppose they are going to screw everybody and deliver them anyway. That's kind of deceptive advertising since they say it will only happen "if they are funded". They need to quit with the "kickstarter clone - CrowdFunding" comparisons and be honest and state that this is simply a presale of decks that are already in existence. I suppose that might not be true for next month - if there IS a next month for them...
