I'm intrigued, but I think it'll be hard to top the first Black Book deck.

I was amazed at the incredible detail of the Black Book deck when I opened it and eyeballed it up close and personal. Very interested to see where the new one goes.

Black Book Manifesto - Launching KS June 2014!

I figured that since this is in their public newsletter, this is ok to post.
So this deck will be bordered. It'll be different than their previous Black Book also because...
(from their email)
- Backers get to influence the words that are incorporated in each time-intensive typographic card design AND...
- The words that are printed and solidified within the Black Book Manifesto will be the source of inspiration and the foundation for a mulit-deck series to come where we collaborate with different talented artists to create custom pieces of artwork for each and every card within the deck.
Also, is it possible to shrink these images using BBCode or some other forum tag?

I like it, but all the number cards won't really have just their suit as the design will they?

Agree Sher, I didn't go deep on the first round, picked up five decks, but was very impressed with them and this one looks brick-worthy.

I like how the pips are white, this deck will be more playable.

I remember we were so psyched about the faces of this deck we pretty much let the fact that the backs were more-or-less blank. We'll have to pay more attention this time.
I invited Scott and Sarah to come by and talk, let's see if they do.

Some designers- such as Jackson, Paul and Randy- keep trumping themselves as it should be. I see that here, the second round looks excellent.

Wonder if they'll consider making just the reds white and the blacks staying black. Looks great though.

Perhaps there will be more of a design this time? Loved the black swirls, but I feel the words sort of took away from it. Hope they come on!

Just.... Why?
Like I understand wanting this deck. Or any deck that pleases the collector. I even understand getting a deck and not opening it, or getting two so you can open one and play with the other.
What I dont understand is this hoarding obsession some of you have. Is it to sell later? Alguien, explicame por favor.
(Also I should mention I am quite bitter about not being able to be a part of the first KS campaign and not being able to find a reasonably priced Black Book of cards with the Bicycle branding. Sadly, I only started collecting in March of 2014.)

No lo entiendo tampoco. I paid sixty-five bucks for my horizontal branded one. But some people don't sell them anyway and they just sit around inaccessible to the rest of us. I think some do sell, or frame, or replace when the open one wears out, or do any combination of these. But I feel some just like having just to have. I'd have no idea what to do, probably sell and give the ones I couldn't away to people that are important to me. But I can't speak for the motivation or psychology of anyone else.

Pretty much this. Some people buy bricks of decks because they use their favorite deck extensively. For example, I'm planning to buy a brick of the Turtleback Tallys when they come out, because I want to use them as my staple deck. Also, some people buy extras to give away to their friends/family. The Black Book decks look like they'd make a fantastic gift. You don't need to be an art aficionado (insert alliteration apology) or a card collector to appreciate these decks.

Now THAT is a response I can live with and stand beside as well. Maybe when I make lots of money I will do this.
However, not the having just to have and sit on. That's just rude.

When it's vowel sounds it's actually assonance, and no need to apologize, it read quite beautifully

I understand the frustration of not being able to get your hands on a deck and knowing that someone has more than one copy and isn't using it. There are several decks I'd like that are difficult or too expensive to get a hold of, and know full well that other people have several of them. However, I don't think it's necessarily "rude" for someone to have several copies of something, even if it prevents others from getting their hands on it, for several reasons:
1. That person paid for those decks, so that person has the right to own them. I don't think anyone has to justify what they do with the decks they have. It's theirs, and they're free to do whatever they like with it. I mean, if you think about it, collecting hobbies can't really be justified in terms of practicality or how often the item is used. Collectors collect items (like decks) that may be used, but since it's a collection there's a high chance only a small fraction (if any) of them will be used. Collectors collect because it gives them some sort of satisfaction... doesn't matter if it's decks of different kinds or several decks of the same kind.
2. If it's an extremely limited deck, then that person probably stayed up late to wait for launch or did whatever it took to have those decks, so it's well earned. Everyone has a fair shot of getting them, so tough luck to anyone who missed out. Fact is, there will always be people who will miss out. I missed out on the Bicycle Branded Black Book decks when I first joined the campaign but I wasn't going to call people out for getting several while I had none. I just waited and hoped a spot would open up. Some campaigns, I've missed completely, like the Fed 52s, ands I didn't resent people for owning 4 Unbranded Black Reserves while I had none. I saved up enough money and watched eBay constantly for an opportunity to buy one. If you really want it, there will be ways to get it. How much money or time you'd be willing to spend on it will depend on whether or not you'll get that coveted item.
3. The primary reason for buying in bulk is most likely NOT so that it will deprive people. Whatever the reason is, spending money just so other people can't have it is probably not one of the top possible reasons for buying several. There is most likely no ill intent towards others.

I couldn't have put it better. Due to circumstances beyond my control I missed the Baker St LE deck. I don't begrudge anyone who got the max.

I give card decks out to friends and family at Christmas and birthdays, and have even converted a couple to collectors. If the price is right and I like the deck a lot (as in it would make a good gift) then it's worth it for me to go there.
Cards make super gifts, who can't use a deck of cards?

Sounds like justification of ill-mannered behavior to me. You're being an enabler, Sher. Not cool.
I ain't losing sleep over it y'all. So quit thinking I'm over here crying myself to sleep over it. It just irks me. That's all.
Also, Sher, I value your response, so I read it. All of it. However, I will not read something that long again. You will get a swift "tl;dr" next time.
Good talk.

Haha well this may be tl;dr - Sorry Sher, I think we took the "too long" prize on this thread. Thanks everyone who extended the invite for us to visit here and we hope the length of this post doesn't make you guys wish you hadn’t! lol
Happy Saturday (& Happy Sunday to those of you on the future side of the world ) and hello to those of you we know from Kickstarter, those from facebook, and to those of you who we’re meeting now
Hi!
We’ve been focused with our heads down until we sent out our last insider announcement but we wanted to stop by and stick our virtual heads in the room.
We’re extremely excited about the Black Book Manifesto and the start of the artistic deck series to come. We have gotten some really great feedback from different artists and we’re so happy you guys are excited too! We are working on some really cool things that we will be sharing with everyone further down the road but we really want to stay focused to get it all right before hand.
We will try to give you guys and gals as much info about our new deck and the decks to come, as well as answer/address any questions you might have however we hope you understand that since a lot of our insiders are not in the UC community, we want it to be fair for everyone to be informed at the same time so most of our sharing, news, and updates will be done during our insider group communications. We will also be opening up the floor to our insiders for suggestions and voting on different elements for the current deck and for creating a cohesive collection for the decks to come. We know we can’t please everyone and we don’t want to lose sight of our own artist vision behind the Black Book Collection so we feel this is the way that works best for us. We just want to be clear so that all expectations are met as this may or may not be what you’re used to on the forum. The good news is that even if we may not answer a question or concern here we could answer it in our insider communications.
To start, we can try and share further about the previous Black Book of Cards back design as it was brought up in this thread….we incorporated a design representing a book cloth material know as black silk moiré (see here for an example
http://editionbinding.com/wp-content/up ... Sheets.jpg) within the back design as a classic accent to the overall artistic vision we had for the deck as well as to achieve an aesthetic balance with all the details covering the face cards throughout the entire deck (which represented pages within a book). Not sure if you knew this but even the phrase we included on the back design is a representation of the musings one might find on the inside cover of a previously owned book, something someone who owned the book before you might have written in the cover and you now read. For us, the back design really pulled together the entire vision combining the book-like tuck box, the typographic designs with words on the “pages”, and the silk moiré book cloth one may find within the inside cover. We had a lot of fun with it and we think it turned out well (but we’re biased)
Regarding Limited Edition decks - we agree with what Shermain said. We too stayed up all hours of the night to release the limited decks on a schedule that we tried to make fair for most around the world and we have definitely burnt ourselves out on occasion but we get right back up again. During the Black Book we had nightmares that we might both fall asleep at the computer and miss the release schedule ourselves lol
Re: the post about gifting the BBoC, we too have heard from many backers that they purchased multiple decks and art prints as they were giving them as gifts…even as birthday gifts as the deck is related to birthdays and something unique to give that others have probably not gotten before (i.e. a card within the deck that is specific to them).
We hope you guys join us on the Black Book Manifesto Kickstarter making it all it can be. We're still finalizing all the details but we feel the Black Book Collection can be something totally different, something we can really have fun with, and try completely new things.
Sorry for the long winded post
We tried to touch on some of the points mentioned in this thread and join in on the fun
Sara & Scott
