Bicycle Golden Spike by Jody Eklund -- Now live
Hey guys,
Jody Eklund (Hipster deck) is working on a new deck. Here are some early sketches...
You can follow him on his FB page: https://www.facebook.com/fluentinplayingcards" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
He also told me that even thought the Hipster KS wasn't successful, the Hipster decks are on the way.

The back remainds a little the SteamPunk Google Playing cards
EDIT: But I'm liking the way the courts are turning!!

Re: Bicycle Golden Spike by Jody Eklund
I think this has a ton of promise! I like it a lot. Hopefully he'll get a great look going for the metal framework and details.
It's much better than the Steampunk Goggles Back. Their Back is basically just a train drawing that's flipped vertically and given a black mesh border around it. The Golden Spike Back design actually has design elements to it.
Thanks, Randy

While I think the tank should be bigger, or the cow catcher smaller, I agree, Randy. Much better overall. I hope this turns out well

I hope they stay away from the overly colorful, comic book-ey style of art and keep that nice line work with some more sophisticated coloring. The sketches are great, will keep an eye on how this one progresses.

It does look a lot like the Goggles deck. Great now everyone is going to start doing train inspired decks of cards, lol.

I'd rather see a hundred train inspired decks than one more Cthulhu deck.vjose32 wrote:It does look a lot like the Goggles deck. Great now everyone is going to start doing train inspired decks of cards, lol.
I'm with. Oat everyone here, this has potential, liking what I see so far.

i can see this one on kickstarter, chugging away nicely, and will roll into stock on time, but like british trains it will never deliver on time, as there is always some reason for a delay.

I'm sold! So long as he doesn't ruin it with colors. But that's 2 fantastic back designs in a row!

Re: Bicycle Golden Spike by Jody Eklund
I want you guys to know that the only way the Hipster Playing cards are going to be printed is through a guy I met through my Kickstarter campaign. There was someone who had a question about that in another forum.
I've started my own design company 6 months ago, so I do not have the personal funds to print my own deck of cards. I greatly appreciate those who want to see me do well. I think that is at the heart of Kickstarter and what Kickstarter does for those like me who risk their time and their hard work in the hopes that there will be enough backers to fund their project. After doing a campaign like the Hipster cards, I applaud anyone who has put a successful or unsuccessful Kickstarter project together.
I've learned a lot from my last campaign that I hope to improve this time around. One of the things I did not have last time before I launched my campaign was a great platform like this to put out my ideas. Thank you for taking the time to comment and give me the feedback I need to come out with a great project.

Glad you're here, Jody! And this deck looks great IMO. And this forum is a great place if not the best place to ask questions. Afterall we are the consumer. But I hope you have thick skin... Many varying opinions fly around here.jodyeklund wrote:I want you guys to know that the only way the Hipster Playing cards are going to be printed is through a guy I met through my Kickstarter campaign. Re: Bicycle Golden Spike by Jody Eklund
Hey everyone!
So I have been working on the illustrations for my next project on Kickstarter. Currently I am calling it "Golden Spike". At this point I am working to put out 4 decks. Of course, this project has been evolving for the last couple months and new ideas come up everyday. A couple days ago, I thought it would be cool to name the second deck "Iron Horses", which came from when the locomotives replaced the Horse and buggy as the main mode of transportation from the east to the west. I have really grown in my love of trains as I have been doing this project.
I am shooting for June 1st as my launch date. There are still a lot more details to be ironed out and with your help, I know we will come up with a great Kickstarter.
So, please let me know your thoughts.
Jody

WOW, this is coming together really well.
I do wish that one of the Golden Spike decks was a "Bicycle" banded deck.. then you're covering all the bases.
But, that being said... I think they look great as is!
Looking forward to adding these to the collection!

Looking very good!
But I think that 4 decks is too much! Unless they are all different and not just a tuck swap or a color or back change!
Lately designers are coming with all of this "different" decks just to make some extra money! Hope this is not the case, and that you'll put some work on all the 4 decks.

The decks are looking great, however if i were you, id lose the bicycle branding on the Iron Horses for it to look more consistent with Golden Spike. The bike logo here really doesnt add anything to the design imo.

True but the Bicycle Branding gets him more customers I would go the same road with the branding.volantangel wrote:The decks are looking great, however if i were you, id lose the bicycle branding on the Iron Horses for it to look more consistent with Golden Spike. Re: Bicycle Golden Spike by Jody Eklund
Ok, so the idea is to produce 4 decks, doing 4 tucks, 4 backs, 4 different aces, different Jokers and ad cards per deck. I think that is pretty different for each deck. It would take me forever to create all different Courts and Numbers.

I personally like the Bicycle logo on the Iron Horses version, but I'd maybe like to see a Bicycle logo on the corresponding Golden Spikes version too.
I do like the fact that the White Limited Edition and Black (also Limited Edition?) decks are unbranded though
I believe that this would be something similar to what the Flight Deck did for it's Kickstarter project

I can wait.jodyeklund wrote:Ok, so the idea is to produce 4 decks, doing 4 tucks, 4 backs, 4 different aces, different Jokers and ad cards per deck. I think that is pretty different for each deck. It would take me forever to create all different Courts and Numbers.
The least you might consider is doing different court art for the 2 different titles. Golden Spike and Iron Horses.
I know they're both about trains, but I think it would be awesome if on the Iron Horses deck, we could see 2-way court cards using engines and train cars.
And it would be original.
No matter where you go... there you are :|

Re: Bicycle Golden Spike by Jody Eklund
I agree with volant, dropping the Bike logo would make the box look better and make the set more consistent. Good artwork sells decks regardless of branding, and I'm starting to feel like creators are putting the Bike logo on their decks just to lure in those "need all Bicycle decks" folks (no offense to them).
Everything looks good though, will definitely support this

Really like these decks!! My grandfather worked on the PRR (Pennsylvania Railroad) for 40 years and I have always been a steam train enthusiast. I would love to see some of the old world steam trains in the decks...Union Pacific Big Boy, The Flying Scotsman, etc... Nice work!

Re: Bicycle Golden Spike by Jody Eklund
I can already imagine how cool the limited tucks would look and feel with them being embossed, silver foil and made out of special stock, something like the Origins tucks.
Also, I know you mentioned earlier that designing different courts for the four different decks would be to much, but maybe you could consider the limited edition having full courts like the current Uusi deck.
How do you people feel about full courts?

Re: Bicycle Golden Spike by Jody Eklund
You mean one-way courts? Generally not a fan, and I'm pretty sure most prefer mirrored courts. Like back designs, playing card courts just doesn't work as well if they're not two-way. Uusi is an unusual designer with amazing artwork, so they are somewhat excused. In this case though, I don't see any harm in having 1 of 4 editions have one-way courts, IF they are done well enough to justify it.Norbie wrote: How do you people feel about full courts?

Re: Bicycle Golden Spike by Jody Eklund
I really like these, especially the Iron Horses. The Black wins over Bicycle tuck though, by far and it would be better without the Bicycle logo. I agree seeing trains on the courts as well would be ideal, but I'm in no matter what. Great job so far! Date???
