we're admirers of chris' "calaveras" campaign - he designed and ran it really well and it's cool to see such a nice guy succeed like that. but we knew that any proper day of the dead campaign was going to have similarities because you simply can't (in our humble opinion) do dia de los muertos without catrina, skeletons, mariachi, flowers, etc. otherwise it isn't really dia de los muertos. but as a result of chris choosing his design to be an homage to the artist posada, he uses primarily blacks and browns as his colors, giving it that "etched wood" feel he describes, with no other colors at all. in our case, we went in the other direction, going full bore with color and ornate details. of course, as a nod to the roots of the holiday we couldn't resist giving the back that parchment feel, which again is a way that most dia de los muertos designs would intersect if they were to honor the past of this holiday. it's hard to avoid certain elements if you want authenticity.
all in all, we went with our choice and ovdiyenko went with his - albeit way ahead of us, obviously - and we think there's enough space in between them to be different. but it was a challenge. of course, anyone doing a dia de los muertos campaign after us is going to find the same pitfalls. and we can't expect them not to have the same elements. all we can say is "good luck!"

I was too late for an early bird, though, so I'll just star this project for now. I'm trying very hard to control my pledging, but I will most likely pledge for this project eventually.

I was late to the party as well, but these are pretty nice, I agree. I went for the $25 spot with 2 decks & dice.

I want all 3 of these decks! I wish the purple deck was the normal/first one because it looks the best, I don't have any purple back decks and it goes well with the bright courts.
On a side note, when watching Mexican boxers (or I only notice this during Cinco De Mayo), they always have this guy wearing this skeleton mask that makes the eyes light up and the mouth moves. It looks funny and creepy at the same time. That's what the Ace of Diamonds remind me of.

I agree, the Painted deck is the best one.
This is another theme that I don't really have any connection to whatsoever, which usually means I don't buy it. Would've gotten a few of those purple ones though, that back is just wicked and fits really well with the courts.

I'll third the suggestion that the "Painted deck" in purple not only looks the best IMO, it's the most different from Chris' deck. I assume you can't swap that in as the base deck now that you already launched, but I hope it's your 1st stretch goal.

I second this, the black deck is over played.

I'll be the 5th person to say that I clearly prefer the purple-back deck, and hope it will be released. Truly the best of them although I also understand why they weren't first as well. Good look, guys - and please keep the thread up-to-date with your plans and any insights into the future directions would also be appreciated. Clearly, everybody that comes here (now, I can't say that pre-December) with designs ends up better off from listening to our membership, which is a very diverse, very global group of magicians, cardists and collectors that all have good intentions. In fact, anybody that has taken the advise of our members has been funded for the most part, and people that have ignored the advice tend to end up empty-handed in the end. I'm not being UC-centric, it's just a fact that our broad membership allows for an almost universal perspective on "All Things Playing Cards" as we have come to say.
The fact is (I'm assuming you have been) Dia De Los Muertos is a colorful and quite elaborate festival, and both myself and my brother have been several times, though not in the last 10 years like we used to make a sojourn to Puerto Vallarta or Cancun (once to Acapulco and Mexico City / district federale) for the fun.
For those not already quite familiar, it's November 1st & 2nd, being the days right after our Halloween. In fact, it's become quite popular in San Francisco, LA, even Atlanta and somewhat in DC at this point, though of course not quite as much "local color" involved. Some images:

Since the designer is a member on here, I wonder if he could change the stretch goals. Have the purple deck available at $25,000 (or lower would be nice) then the black one at $50,000.

Agreed, that would be very cool if we could get them to offer it earlier than intended or maybe even see if they were willing to ask their backers which they prefer to be produced first? Just thinking it might be an open-and-shut case for backers if even 51% percent agree with almost all of us (that have commented).

I add my voice for an earlier "painted deck".

Actually I think it looks like Stephen Rooks of the Bicycle Tattoo deck got together with Chris Ovdiyenko and made these cards. And I'm another one hoping the colourful deck becomes the 1st stretch.

I love this project. I live in the high desert of New Mexico, and day of the dead is huge here. I really appreciate the research they put in to accurately design the subjects in the court cards etc. I'm contributing to this project and am very excited about the painted deck...

I agree. I really like the feel of this deck but I can't get over the fact that the main skull looks so much like Rooks'.

I knew without a doubt it'll be funded in no time. It's just the $50,000 that we have to reach. Also I noticed his goal of $10,000 which I thought other decks have a higher goal that than and still didn't come near that.

Love this beautifully illustrated deck.
