When heard Lorenzo is working on a second round of these I was mildly interested. When I saw the direction he went with on Patreon, I was pretty excited. Might be my favorite 2023 project.

That King of Hearts looks great the way he is angled. Lorenzo is at the top of his game. I don't think there is anyone as consistent and imaginative as him.

I agree 100% with these statements.

Can't wait to solve this quest as well! It was such a rush getting into it, and I can't wait to see what's in store for this one. An artist and a visionary.

The Golum is cool, but there is low cost alternative:

Timeline doesn’t work

Plastic toilet brush was invented in 1932 by William C. Schopp and patented by the Addis Brush Company in 1933.

Perhaps this…

Timelines always work if you're in a multiverse.

I think comparing Burt the Chimney Sweep with the Gollum is quite fitting. For those of you who don't remember the movie being referenced above, here's a trailer to remind you:

There's a lot of talent out there, but I can't think of anyone else with the consistency of excellence like Lorenzo. Usually even my favorite designers occasionally come out with a deck that's a pass for me, but I haven't passed on a Stockhlm 17 deck in a very long while. This won't be an exception.

I agree, I like his work so much I started a second S17 Patreon membership this year.

Not really interested in the golem but those decks are going to be amazing indeed. For those who are not in his Patreon, Lorenzo is very open sharing his design process, and is quick to respond if you ask him anything. If you are on the fence, just go for it. You will not be disappointed. I am only interested in the decks, so I go with the Queen level, which is a very fair $20 per month.

For someone firmly in the "on the fence" camp, such a feeling to me is typically a signal to keep my wallet stashed. Can you elaborate on what makes his Patreon so immune to disappointment apart from delivering on-time? And at what point in the year does his Patreon open up for new subscribers?

You can join as a pip now for $2/month to be in the loop with his updates and then at the end of the year, you have an opportunity to purchase the patreon rewards for a lump sum. All other tiers are closed until January 2024.

That's what I did for this past year's rewards, which was $240 for everything, equivalent to a Queen tier membership. James' account is purely subjective, but you can look at Lorenzo's past works (both recent and not), and judge for yourself. Like with all Patreons, there is risk for disappointment.

As kevork said join for $2 a month to get a behind the scenes look at what Lorenzo is doing. You'll get to see the work in progress of the decks. You even get to have a say in some of the designs (like deciding on the back design of the 17th Kingdom, some of the EOTO v2 courts, back of the Dude Odd Fellows deck, etc)

If you are a fan of Lorenzo's art and designs and love seeing the design process of creating a deck; this alone is worth the cost of the $2 patreon. After all you're putting your hard earned money on an artist you believe is worth supporting and whose art is worth collecting.

Disclaimer: Note that kevork did say 'opportunity' to get the higher tier patreon reward. It'll be based on how many packages got lost or were unclaimed by the patrons. First come first served.

Lastly Patreons also get access to a patron only store and tier-based discount in the S17 store. Honestly, I've barely used that myself, but it's nice to have for the rare times I actually wanted to get something.

What was the patreon reward this year?

At the end of the 2022 Patreon year, Lorenzo offered 30 of these packages to his pips during a 24hr window. By the end of this window, about half of them - maybe even more - were still available and removed off his site for now.

Lorenzo has 568 patrons for 2023, which can fluctuate depending on people dropping or new pips being added. Since some some have Jokers/Aces tiers, which entitles the individual to twice the rewards, the total number of decks required to fulfill everyone according to Lorenzo is 630. In order to account for shipping issues, etc. he adds 10% + to this total, making it a 700 print run release. With this in mind, there could be up to 70 sets available by the end of the year. This is not a guarantee you can get the package if you remain a pip, but there is a high chance you can, as the packages are available to pips ONLY. This is an ingenious way to essentially backpay for the year at the Queens tier, which is one of each deck.

If I were in someone's shoes who was hesitant, I'd fork over $2 a month to get the behind the scenes, access to the patreon store, and input capability. Then after I've seen all the decks offered in the package for the year, I can decide if I want to purchase it or not. The con of doing it this way is it would cost you $24 more total over the course of a year. The pro is you might save $216. Naturally the savings go down with each deck you end up buying from his store throughout the year anyways (think public releases of Cpt Spindel, NFG, etc.)

Keep in mind, some of the decks in that photo are gilded or edge-printed. There's a lot of snazzy stuff going on with each deck. Just sayin'.

I assume this picture is the Queens tier. Higher tiers get more stuff like special frames and uncut tucks. Totally worth it in my opinion.
