Sooo... JR's license is not an exclusive license? Huh.

I'll totally be getting both, but I adore LotR. I see T11 as a player's deck and KW as an art deck.

The tuck on the T11 decks looks great from what we can see. I think T11 has some of the best looking tucks.

My 2 cents as someone who watches the card market closely - T11 very recently spoiled a Pirates deck with #soon. It has not been their style to release 2 new projects at once, so I assume they saw JR release date, realised they could be beaten to the punch and switched out the product to go in the launch spot to the LOTR ones.
I also imagine that as a company who has spent a bucket on licencing rights, they would have a watching closely the playing card market. I would be confident they knew everything we know about JR LOTR deck including the style, the launch date and the expected price.
Denying knowledge of a lucrative competing deal and switching out products to launch is simultaneously very poor form and a lucky/savvy business decision. I feel bad for JR.

There's probably a great chunk of truth to the above from FUD. It would explain why the pirate deck teaser is a picture of a real tuck box while this LOTR promo image is clearly a render.
I'm reading a lot of folks saying things like "I feel bad for Jackson," but the high liklihood is the T11 project has been going on for just as long. I know from firsthand experience that Kevin is WAAAAAAY slower than Jackson. It take Kevin a year to do the artwork for a deck. That's his process. I also know that JR is a beast of illustration and knocks out decks in 2 weeks. He's been teasing this LOTR for a LONG time. He's also been putting out a ton of other decks in the interim. This is unfortunate from the angle that neither can monopolize the market--but honestly... T11 sells a million decks a minute. If this deck isn't a huge success they won't fold. LOL. And Jackson? I think Jackson will still command the custom collector's dollars. The decks will be more rare. Offer more unique editions. There will be gilded versions I'm sure. I think the number of folks who will buy the T11 deck just because its cheaper will be few and far between. More than likely this will create MORE demand for the two. Just because I think people will want to own both.

Eventually, this deck and the upcoming decks telling of Lord of the Rings hopelly lived up to the stories
This is Kevin Cantrell vs Jackson Robinson. Perhaps Jackson doesn't have to worry - he had made a few story theme decks so far - with Alice in Wonderland deemed the best that it has its own jigsaw puzzle!!! - he will do justice with his own decks, I am sure!

WHOA! That long! Perhaps that is called perfectionism in every work! Or perhaps it's because he has other graphic design works to do as well! Need to know that there are designers that work only on playing cards and designers that are general graphic designers - aka design more than just playing cards, mainly packaging and branding.

No need to feel bad for me at all. I love the chance to throw down the Gauntlet with T11 any day of the week, and I would be lying if I didn't say I wanted to compete if not let everybody see who has the true "One Deck to Rule Them All". From me, if all goes as planned you will get 2 100% unique and 100% different decks, one LOTR deck of my new style and direction, and one of my original direction. Both decks will have foiling on both front and back and the price for both will be much lower than the normal KW pricing and give T11 the best competition they have seen in a long time. They have the advantage of a monster of a license but I feel LOTR fans are thirsty for something fresh and new and the movie IP is already 20 years old and has already been heavily exploited. What people will get from me, is the entire story and full cast of characters (not just the trimmed-down theatrical list). In the end, T11 is gonna make a great deck that looks awesome. But as an illustrator rehashing someone else's character design isn't where I find my inspiration.
Also, I hope that isn't a dragon on the T11's tuck case, cuz there ain't no dragons in LOTRs, only the Hobbit.

Even if there is a competition, you might have just won without a fight XD. We have seen all your fresh artwork you shared, and it's going to be good. You've done a few story theme decks, those should be enough proof you are good at this! And, when you say your LotR decks will have foiling on both sides, does that mean you are going to print with EPCC?
And yeah, I think THAT is a dragon on the tuckbox, along with the demonic eye on the tower. In their defense, Hobbit happened before LotR - so assuming that T11 LotR is going to involve both Hobbit and LotR film series

As for printing, I will be using the same manufacturer that I used for the Mistborn playing cards. They also happen to be the same manufacturer of my jigsaw puzzles as well and do an excellent job. I, unfortunately, have stopped printing with EPCC.
As for the Hobbit, I guess they will be able to do that as well, as there are made up female characters in the movie, but unfortunately for me there are no female characters (for queens) in the actual text.

Hmmm so what company will you use to create Lord of the Rings? Is this company we already known off or is it something new
And… hmmm interesting, no actual female characters in the real text - so how to assign the Queen for your decks?

Good luck getting that info. Jackson has been quite tight-lipped about that.

He doesn't since he isn't making a Hobbit deck.

Should be very interesting. It's always great to have competition and it will be fun to see two different takes. I am excited for both the KWP and T11 decks and plan on buying both.
Things are really ramping up again!

You would be releasing the originally teased artwork LotR deck too? Those in my opinion and likeness of artwork, are nicer/better than the newly teased artwork. I'm really hoping the original artwork is also released!

One thing I hope is that both designs have the name of the characters on the card. I am a big fan but not so much I can tell who some of the non-main characters are. The old design does, but the new one does not.

Not exactly. It is a different treatment of the new artwork he's created. I still like it better than the color, but not as much as the original engraving style pieces he created.

Personally, I would prefer the names
not be included on the cards; and I am sure that someone will post photos of each with the names attached so they can be locked up by others who don't know every character, myself included.

Yeah I like the names he's added to the gold edition, but I reeeeally like the ornate borders he's made. Replacing them with some text would be a great loss.

I am sure both T11 (Kevin) and Jackson will put out some outstanding decks. I will have no problem adding both as I am a huge fan of LOTR and both artists. I love Jackson's competitive energy and determination. Having seen what Jackson's designs so far, I am super excited to get them. I am not sure though why the Tolkien group licensed to groups to produce decks though. That seems a bit much.

You just answered your own question. Why shouldn't they grant multiple artists to use a liscence?
Not to mention that IP is a ridiculously infantile concept anyways, but that's for another day...

The Tolkien estate probably has nothing to do with it since they don't own the rights to the movies, which the T11 cards are based on.
