Done a quick check on the Japanese text on Midnight Dots deck, and it said:

Sake wa honshin o arawasu

Sake represents the true spirit

they prefer to have it because of hype and being cool. i believe the main draw, just like other hype brands, is that people ''like'' them and want them because other people like them, or say they do because other people do. its the typical other people see these as cool so to be cool i need these. it doesnt matter if it is a plain rectangle, a rectangle with a dot or an f, some clip art BS copy and pasted on or a checkerboard.

some will say its because of the founders/owners? zack or alex being so good and big in the community. perhaps that started the brand at first, but that only started they hype ball rolling and now it is just self perpetuating. the downside is that these things can swing in the negative. people can start hating them just because other people hate them. then it becomes more popular to hate on something and if you don't you're not cool. look at affliction shirts, fortnite, nickleback, etc. they were all very popular. then at some point it became more popular to hate on them for no reason other than other people did and you were made fun of for liking them when not too long ago, everyone liked them. i see this a lot with my kids, for a time they are super into something and it is all the rage in school. then you ask them hey why don't you play fortnite anymore, listen to so and so anymore? you get a laugh and "they're so dumb, nobody likes that any more. so lame"

remember fidget spinners or those little rubberbands that were shaped like animals and whatnot? all of a sudden they were everywhere and all the kids NEEDED them. then poof, they were gone. fontaines, noc's, anyone are the fidget spinners of playing cards. the shitty gas station ones.

You are making it look like Riderbacks are an artistic revelation. Riderbacks look classy but that's it. Neither are artistically on a high level. I mean there is a guy on reddit who started drawing as a hobby and he is not far of from the classic courts and shit.
Is it so hard to grasp for real that people only look at a card back and want it to be clean and minimalist and not look like they're from 100 years ago?
Not in for these but e.g. the OG anyone Dot simply looks clean and good, period.

You've misinterpreted. I'm saying the complete opposite, that bikes are NOT particularly artistic, but even with that in mind, they are still head of shoulders above this deck from a design/artistry standpoint. I've far as I'm concerned, there's minimalism, and then there's whatever this is. Laziness incarnate.

We're critiquing designs, of course it's subjective. That goes for 95% of what's shared on UC as far as I can tell, goes without saying.

I'm not sure I agree with your distinction between subjectivity and art, as art is inherently subjective. The question was more of an interpretation of the current custom card zeitgeist on UC.
