Early 20th Century Cyclists-Bicycle Posters - KS

Unread post by Bookatar »

Hello - this is our 2nd deck and it will be on Kickstarter within a few days, to take advantage of their Make/100 January 2021 offer.

The deck features original graphic work inspired by vintage Art Deco posters of women cyclists and their early bikes. It is a continuation of our just finished and successfully closed KS project.

The collective wisdom and goodwill hosted on this forum is amazing. We would love to receive any feedback, suggestions, corrections.

The original SKILLS OF BIKE / GRIP OF LIFE Kickstarter offered a calendar, a book and a zine, all centered on the women emancipation movement.

You haven't delivered the calendars or books yet, so why start this now? Not cool to start second project before first is fulfilled.
Move on, nothing to see here.

We just finished delivery of Skills of Bike KS project (calendar and book).
Skills of Bike playing cards project will launch this week, with production and delivery planned for April.

The choice was between:
(A) staying small, fast and local , in terms of raising funds and quick printing, or
(B) going big and fancy (Carta Mundi, USPCC printers), but with a much higher funds goal, and a later, end of Summer delivery.

Reflecting on the values of the collective attributes of cyclists communities we have decided to go with the first option.
Actually, supporting a local printer, when almost devastated commercially by the Pandemic, is the right thing to do.

Still time for us to incorporate - or at least to learn from - suggestions (if any) from this amazing, frank / blunt group of aficionados. Muchas gracias.

The box quality is probably way to modest for the group, but none-the-less:

Back of the card design was also inspired by a classic art-deco poster:

Thanks again for any feedback.

PLEASE change the name. “Skills of Bike” is terrible. Just terrible. I believe you already know the tuck box is uninspired and mismatched with the style and artwork of the cards, and you appear to be fine with that, but the name you chose is pure nonsense.

Well, now that books and calender are done it kinda is impossible to change the name. Agreed that it sounds very weird though.
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

Tuck box options, Max, what you think?

Bicycle Chainless deck should be your reference template for the fine detailed back example. Also consider Jody Eklund's earlier Blackink series like Golden Spike, Innovation, Devastation, Iron Horse Flying Aces 1 and 2 as references as well. (all available on KS) IMHO, Jody has some of the best themed and detailed backs out there.

Not sure who you can reference for minimal themed backs though.

For better or worse the project is launched. So far, 12 hours after, we've got 60% funded.

Please support it - just with a few advices, for us will be a learning lesson, anyway.
As they say in my old country: any kick in the ass is a step forward.
