Well hey!

Name's Joe, and I'm from Toronto.
Not a magician or cardist, but love the artistic medium that playing cards can offer.
I found this site via some random YouTube video that I've since forgotten which mentioned that this was the place to be!

I started collecting VERY recently, and don't yet have a ton to show for it, but I think I already have a fairly solid idea of what I like.
Unfortunately the vast majority of those seem to be crazy expensive (TWI/Lotrek/etc.).

Hoping that I can find some decent deals at some point, or find something fun on kickstarter soon!

So far, my favourite decks (that I own) are the red 666, Black Widow, and the Grotesk decks.
I definitely seem to be attracted to the "evil" looking options.

Here's a current list that I'd love to complete (without taking out a second mortgage):
-Apocalisse (Thirdway Industries)
-Culminus Infiniti / Avernum (Nicolai Aaroe)
-666 Dark Reserve (Riffle Shuffle)
-Red Hellions
-Reincarnation (Gambler’s Warehouse)
-Thorns and Roses (Steve Minty)
-Parlour Black Edition (Stockholm 17 / TGW)
-Standards Black Edition (Art of Play)
-Black Monolith (Thirdway Industries)
-Dominus Obscura / Divinus (Nicolai Aaroe)
-Defunctorum Cruor (NoirArts)

Anyhoo. If you got this far, thanks for reading!
And if you have any suggestions for decks in this vein, let me know!

I hear you... I’m going broke as an outhouse rat buying up cards! My thought is that if you see something you like, you better grab it then because it probably won’t be there long. I’ve missed on a few decks that I really want because I hesitated to pull the trigger. Like you, a lot of what I really want to add to the collection are high dollar decks but I look at it like this: you gotta spend it on something, and from what I can tell, playing cards can be an appreciating asset, provided you buy right. I’m not in it looking to turn a buck but if I ever needed to, it’s nice to know that it’s possible.

Welcome to UC Joe:

There are some great darker side decks and such. It looks like you have already found some great ones. I especially like Nicolai Aaroe's work on both dark and light.

I don't know if you like tarot, but there are some good dark tarot decks. Most recently there was Goetia, which was by Fabio Listrani. It is a 3d rendering, and some definitely prefer more hand drawn art. Still, it is quite dark and just had a companion light version that was just funded on Kickstarter. https://unitedcardists.com/viewtopic.ph ... ia#p176578.

Unfortunately, I don't see any of the Goetia decks for sale on their website, but I am hoping they will have them before too long. They are probably still making sure all the Kickstarter rewards get delivered okay before putting any extras on sale. There were also some surplus decks sold as part of their Notoria companion Kickstarter. Hopefully the didn't sell all their surplus during the Notoria campaign.

Hi Joe and welcome to the forum. I visited Toronto when I was 10 years old and it's still one of my favourite holidays.

Good luck with the deck hunt!

I’ve been collecting about two months (JUST before Apocalisse was affordable).
There’s a huge difference between “fun”, and “expensive”.

It’s a bit disheartening, to be honest, but I would imagine that things are only going to get better.

I can completely commit to having no interest in tarot.
I can still appreciate the art, but the price points seem absurd, given that I plan on opening and using every single deck, regardless of rarity.

I’ve Backed Royales, Eternal Reign, and King Arthur so far.
My first three kickstarters ever, and they all look incredible.

I’m not afraid to pledge where I’m interested, but paying $200 for a deck seems absurd to me.

It’s a complete crap chute for those of us that have to live here, but I can see the allure. ;P
Glad you had a great time.

Hey!
I tried to send an email a few days ago, but it wouldn’t send.
I sent it through here to (what I’d assume is) a general company email.

Hoping you got it!
