ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - LIVE now on Kickstarter
After a short delay we will now be launching Wednesday September 2nd at 18:00 CET / 9:00 CALI / 12:00pm EASTERN
Get Notified
Hey guys! We're excited to announce and share some images from our next project, which will be launching as soon as we get the packages for Hops & Barley finally shipped out.
Let me know your thoughts below
Since the dawn of time, man has strived to explore the mysterious depths of the ocean floor. Frequently romanticised and often feared, the sheer vastness of the sea has given rise to rich folklore about what could reside there.
ONDA, the fourth project by Jocu Playing Cards, is a colourful, visual exploration of this world and its both real and imagined creatures. From plants and animals to legendary beasts, some mythical and others so bizarre and wonderful that you'd never believe they existed, ONDA is a new colourful and visually striking experience and a unique addition to the Jocu collection.
We're still finalising the campaign structure, but it looks likely that we'll launch with two back variants rather than the usual two colour variants. Here is the alternate back design.
The boxes will be completely different too, but the faces the same apart from the jokers.

Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - KS August
Love it! I will be backing for sure. But here are some critiques:
I don't like when the back and front borders don't match and this is no exception. I'm not sure what you can do about the navy back though. Making that border white wouldn't really blend with the rest of the back. And making the front borders navy wouldn't really look good either. Hmmm. I'm also sure I'm the only person in the world that cares about this since every time I bring it up, crickets. So maybe don't even bother.
I don't like the font choice at all. Seems like Times New Roman... boooooring! The rest of this deck is so colorful and whimsical that the font almost seems out of place.
I also don't like how small the pips are on the spot cards. I would like to see them enlarged.
Other than that I think this is a great deck! Who will be printing it?

I agree. Don't bother changing the borders Honestly, there are so few decks that break this "rule" that it's simply not a big deal to me anymore. And I don't want all of my decks to have white borders.vasta41 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 19, 2020 7:32 am Love it! I will be backing for sure. But here are some critiques:

I also think the font is somewhat boring, but then again, it's also safe. I'd rather have this than something wacky at the other end of the scale. But it never hurts to experiment with options.
Looking like another great project from Jocu. I'm sad I had to skip Hops & Barley, which I will get somewhere down the line. Hopefully I'll be able to pick this one up!

Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - KS August
These chubby pips make me smile. How could they not? They're chubby pips!
I've always been and will continue to be a fan of solid pips on the indices. (I don't mind a dot in the center of them, but that's about it) Designs going on inside the pip on the indices make me take longer to register what suit it is and I value being able to distinguish quickly the suit and rank of a given card. Granted, I am visually in the minority of the world and most folks have quite good vision. I don't and my opinion is mine own.
I think the font is fine if a touch small. I've forced myself to use decks with difficult fonts and often they are a challenge. I value an easy to distinguish font like the one chosen here. In my opinion there is never a downside to being able to easily distinguish rank in a deck of playing cards.
The courts here are fun. Each one has it's own game of search and find going on. That's delightful, really it is. These folks are loaded to the gills with various bits of what nots and swimmers.
By the by, really digging on that second card back. That's got motion for days and the full bleed will be a blast to play with. It also makes me think the frame on the courts is a missed opportunity to throw in some bubbles, but I like bubbles.

Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - KS August
At a glance, the spades and clubs look really similar. A bit harder to distinguish. I personally don't mind the edge color of the black mismatching with the faces. The only area I think that causes a problem is with magic, and this deck really isn't made for that.
The colors and courts are - as expected - outstanding. I can't wait to find out more about the details and the stories!

Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - KS August
Happy to see your new project. I like the different backs a lot and like that there is an option for both fractions. I wouldn't change a thing.
You know my opinion on the pips. I like chubby, but for this deck I would prefer something more elusive.
Overall I'm very pleased. I can't wait to get a glimpse on the tuckboxes. Seeing your past projects it is/was always one of your strenghts.

Absolutely agree with you! Those two chubby pips would look very similar at a glance. In use, I don't think I would be able to tell them apart quickly at all. That does brings bit of a learning curve into the decks.KingfisherZero wrote: ↑Wed Aug 19, 2020 9:34 am At a glance, the spades and clubs look really similar. A bit harder to distinguish.

Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - KS August
Overall, I really love the artwork and am digging both backs, but must agree that the spades and clubs are too similar, now that KingfisherZero points it out.
The only other thing that I am I not fond of is the hair of the KoS. I am sorry to say, but it looks too much like earthworms to me. I am an avid diver as well as an underwater photographer and I don't recall seeing any creature in the sea in my 22 years of diving that resembles the KoS' hair. Aside from that, I love the deck.

A deck a day helps keep the addiction at bay!

Maybe juste enhance the pointy edge of the spades in order to differentiate from the clubs? Idk.
LOVE the 2nd back, courts are wow, not to mention fresh and original. If the tuck is right I’m in.

Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - KS August
Thank you for the positive feedback and critiques so far! I'm really pleased with the response and happy to take small critiques on what to improve as we're still tweaking the design and will be right up until launch.
I should give a little background - this project has been much freer for Ale to do as she pleases and work from her own ideas and creativity rather than working toward a set theme or mythology which places restrictions on what she can do. I'm really happy with how it's turned out and whilst a couple of times we've made changes together based on my opinions, generally she has free reign
Regarding the font I had the same reservations, but it's grown on me. It'll be tweaked for the boxes so I'll make sure to get feedback on those before we launch. We hope to have at least three foils this time as well as pantone on the box (for the fish design) so it's quite a complex setup but I think we've almost cracked it!
I have had a few people say the same thing about the spade and clubs pips being a bit similar so we're looking into how we can improve this without altering the style. These decks are not really aimed at magicians (hence the different back designs rather than a colour switch) so they do need to be playable so this is on our list.
@Shermjack thanks for the feedback! Ale has just explained that the hair of that card is based on a type of jellyfish that provides the inspiration for that card. All will be explained in the campaign
Thank you guys!

Thank you guys! We're super busy getting Hops & Barley out the door so I haven't been able to pop back, but the design is ready and if we can we'll launch on 1st Sept, if not it'll be the week after.
I've added the tuck box art for the main variant to the first post and below

Sorry Jocu, art is too odd for me. Maybe it's too detailed but not my cup of tea. Do like first back vs second one better though if that helps.

Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - KS September 1st
Wave variant tuck box is ready to show - like the Ultramarine variant it has three layers of foil (at least, the printer's getting excited so maybe we can squeeze another layer out of him if he's up for it) . This will be a nice n' shiny one!
The Ultramarine edition is foiled too, but will be a little more understated as the lighter shades will be pearlescent foil and only the red will be metallic. The detail here will be brought to life more by the heavy embossing.
As we will be very hands-on with the tuck printing we're considering doing a slight foil variation for each version as a Kickstarter exclusive tuck swap. It won't cost any more than the standard, but we'll probably limit it to say, 500. This way we can provide something nice and an alternate tuck without doing a whole new deck which I don't think is necessary (at least at this stage)
I'm thinking gold foil. I reckon it'd look great against the blue.

Cold foil by Cartamundi for this box? In this case, you can expand the artwork to edges, use gradients, and even more colors and details.

Hey guys! Looks like we need to delay a couple of days as KS is taking longer than usual with their approval... hopefully it won't be more than a day or so! Working on getting an answer today.

Love that Wave edition, in for 2.
Just wish there were an earlybird option for what I picked. Regardless, beautiful work, excited about this one!

Thank you everyone! Great to see so many familiar names in the early backers list.
I thought about doing EBs for double variants but didn't want to end up with lopsided production numbers in case one proved vastly more popular. Don't worry though, I'm sure I can sort something for you Piazzadelivery and any other UC members who want a similar deal.

Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - LIVE now on Kickstarter
Thank you everyone for your support!
We really wanted a strong first day this time and you smashed it, we have more backers in less than 24 hours than we usually have after the first week. Thank you!
There's still a few hours left to be a Day One backer and get entry to our giveaway as well as the free items. After that, there is still another 48 hours of Early Birds before we start opening up stretch goals.
Our plan is to offer some variant tucks - probably with gold foiling but based on the original designs - exclusively for Kickstarter backers. They will be limited to however many people want them, and we may include them automatically in Brick Tiers instead of just standard decks. They will be available as add-ons (same cost as regular decks) for everyone else.
There will also be other extras being unlocked as we go but we'll keep them secret for now. Thank you and here's to a strong day 2!
I’m considering breaking my no uncut-sheets rule to get some just for me

I’m biased but I that’s my favourite too. The blue is amazing and it goes so well with the red (and also the copper that we’re experimenting with for the KS exclusive variant)CollectADeck wrote: ↑Wed Sep 02, 2020 3:59 pm Something about that darker back design has me mesmerized. Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - LIVE now on Kickstarter
Interior foiling is all but unlocked so now it's on to the KS Exclusive tuck variants!
Here's the foiling mockup first... the same design will be used throughout the series and is based on wave patterns used in old Japanese art.
As for the variants, these will be unlocked at just over €14k and can be added on like regular decks for €13. However they will be strictly limited to a 500 run each and will not be available after KS.
They will use metallic foils of different colours and shades and be a nice, affordable variant as the campaign continues to grow. If we can get there in the next couple of days, it looks like we might be able to add our actual third deck (although we're trying not to get ahead of ourselves, it's gonna be a really nice twist on the standard )
What do you think of the concepts for these two?

Re: ONDA by Jocu Playing Cards - LIVE now on Kickstarter
Ultramarine foil on blue matte is nice sure. Gold fish, okay they're gold fish but that's the only real point of contrast and it's a bit garish against the blues. There is no binder to bring it all together and make my eyes say, yum. Me paws want to play with the fishie fish on the original tuck. This variant I see here is not so much the case because my eyes slide off the tuck back. I feel the original is superior to this version.
The wave edition tuck shown here is pretty great. I think it's better than the first wave edition tuck. The colors contrast and yes my eyes say yum. I'd like to put me paw into it and splish splash a bit.

TL:DR It's completely up to you.
