Big foot prints to step in here. The execution of the theme is not to my liking though so, despite me being a Miyazaki-san maniac, I'll not get this deck. That's solely a matter of subjective preferences though. You can tell by the details that this is not just a licensed product but a well made product by fans of Studio Ghibli.

Same. I would kill for a good Ghibli deck. This ain't it. Plus even the EB comes out to about $24 shipped for a single deck.

I don't know anything about anime. I do know though that its very hard not to smile when you first see that tuck. Maybe a few for the store is in order...

I am in mainly because of the case. Overall I am sure they pay a handsome license fee and hence the high price. It will always make a unique gift for someone down the road.

Yeah, that's crazy.
And it says "Fulfillment by Gambler's Warehouse", but the US shipping cost is over $7 for one deck.

Guess not...got this message this morning
Hello,
This is a message from Kickstarter’s Trust and Safety team. We're writing to inform you that a project you backed, GHIBLI PLAYING CARDS, is the subject of an intellectual property dispute.
The project has been removed from public view until the dispute is resolved, which can take up to 30 days. The project’s funding and the countdown to its deadline have been stopped. If the project becomes available again, the countdown will continue and the new deadline will extend past the original deadline for as much time as the project was unavailable. You can find out more by reading our Copyright Policy and our Trademark Policy.
Original deadline
Thu, Sep 3 2020 11:59 am EDT
Time remaining if project becomes available
9 days

This really doesn't surprise me, considering most of the art looked like screen grabs. Maybe one day we'll get a Ghibli deck worthy of the source material.

Well, that convinced me to cancel my pledge. While initially I thought it's a cute deck with a cute case, and it claimed to be licensed - who knows how far away they are from resolving this. Last time Hansen Chien did his Chicken Nugget vintage set and he disappeared after months of 'negotiating', only for me to discover months later he released them somewhere else. I think Hansen have some great design ideas but I am getting tired of his continuing disregard of Intellectual Property (eg. The Hidden Treasure). But I digress.
Maybe it's a language or fine prints thing? Like they thought they were licensed to do all sorts of things then Ghibli came back and told them no no no, why don't you get a Japanese translator and stop using Google translate.
In the end, it's just too expensive for a 'toy deck'.

From the communication to backers:
We would like to apologise the interruption of our Ghibli Deck Kicketarter campaign. We are as surprised as you might be and in all transparency, we are still trying to figue out why our project had was put on hold.
As you already know, we have the lisence and we will update you as soon as possible. For the moment nothing is clear and we are directly in touch with Ghibli Studio to find a solution and move forward wirth our kickstarter.
So let's see how this plays out.

Don't bet on it; it's likely a game of words. They reached out to me before they shared the deck publicly, and I kept probing them with the licensing issue plus sending them the copyright terms from the official Studio Ghibli site, in which they had no answer. One week later, they told me they got the licensing without providing any evidence. Those images are clearly pulled from stock images and not illustrated by themselves.
Studio Ghibli is THE Japanese Disney; there is no way such a huge and successful studio would grant a nobody their license. Here are the copyright terms from their official site:
http://www.ghibli.jp/misc/
Copyright
All titles and rights, including copyrights, to any and all photographic and/or visual images, and/or the text of all internet site documents produced by STUDIO GHIBLI ("GHIBLI") are reserves by GHIBLI> NO part of such photographs, images and documents may be reproduced, transmitted, broadcast, exhibited, exploited or otherwise used in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopy, recording, wire or cable-system, transmission, or any information storage and retrieval system, without the prior written permission of GHIBLI, except in accordance with the provisions of the Copyright Law of Japan and any other relevant laws. Modification of the materials or use of materials for any other purpose is a violation of GHIBLI's copyright and other proprietary rights. Any information, data, idea, concept, and/or know-how provided to GHIBLI through the Internet by any user may be used and made public by GHIBLI and/or any of its affiliated companies for any purposes in its sole discretion.
And Omen claims they've got the license in one week going through Japanese copyright laws and process? I call BS.

Ah, didn't know about the license issue in just one week. Asian bureaucracy never moves that fast for something like this. Yes, I think that's the end of this one. If they actually did get a license, they probably went through an "agent" who "secured" them a "license" in 1 week.
