But can we consider a stretch goal for the courts to be fully nerds and jocks? I think we can includes the Nerds/jocks of the 2000's. E-sports, Parkour, cosplay, toycollectors and Social media can new courts for the 2000's. (We can throw in cardistry as a new Jack for the nerds and magicians as the Jack for the Jocks. very appropriate considering how Magic is now cool and how they view cardists as part of the stereotype!)
Just my humble $0.02.
Hey Eric,
Since I’ve spent the last 4 months (1 to 2 hours at night) working on the 12 custom Courts, I’m not chomping at the bits at the idea of spending another 4 months creating 12 new custom Nerds and Jocks Courts.
12 custom Courts is always a daunting task. They are, by far, the toughest challenge of a custom Deck!
24 custom Courts would be like working on two completely different designs back-to-back. I know there’s a handful of designers that have different Courts for each variation of Deck for a particular theme, but they’re usually not all custom. In most cases, there’s 12 custom Courts as the base. Then the other Deck variations are usually just slight variances between the base Courts, second version Courts, third version Courts... usually different hair style, different weapon, different background, different colors...
What you and Rich are suggesting would mean 24 completely unique Courts (not 12 base Courts with 12 slightly revised Courts). Example - there’s no way to take the current King of Hearts Jock as the base, and simply turn him into a Nerd. It would mean scraping everything in the Jock KOH and drawing new Nerd outfits, props and such.
Part of the fun of doing a custom Deck is planning it all out. Splitting the Deck in half makes complete sense. Gameplay with Playing Cards is often reliant on Red Courts vs. Black Courts. So having the Red Suits as the Jocks and the Black Suits as the Nerds truly creates a versus mentality.
I plan many of my Decks with the Red vs Black setup. The Black Suits for the Wild West Decks focuses on characters important to the town of Deadwood. The Red Suits for the Wild West Decks focuses on characters important to the overall region of The Black Hills. The Black Suits for the Rome Decks focuses on people who were ultimately against Julius Caesar and Augustus. The Red Suits for the Rome Decks focuses on people who were with Caesar and Augustus until the end.
The idea of incorporating modern Nerds and Jocks wouldn’t fit with this theme. Nerds and Jocks from the 1980s are a LOT different than their modern counterparts. Modern nerds are much more stylish, successful and mainstream. Jocks are now almost like a nerd of their particular sport. Just look at the NFL. Tom Brady is pretty much a sports nerd and jock all in one! Modern jocks are scientific with the way they eat, workout and study gameplay. Modern nerds are inventors of gadgets that almost everyone in the world use (computers, smart phones...). Merging the 80s and modern styles just wouldn’t work. A modern Nerds and Jocks design would be more of a future spinoff design.
Thanks, Randy
