Cactus Playing Cards

Cactus Playing Cards
I have always dreamed about creating my own deck of playing cards. With all the playing cards coming out every year, I felt I had nothing to offer the world. That was until this design came to mind.

I spent two years of my life in the Arizona Desert, looking at the majestic Saguaro every day. Though it was a short amount of time, I fell in love with the desert and the Saguaro. There is no better icon than this cactus to represent the old west, and the history that lives there. I hope this deck will too become a vivid history that lives on.

Design
Premium stock
1 Double Backer
All custom faces and pips
Two identical jokers
Casino cut card (perfect for game-play, magic or a bookmark)
Printed by the United States Playing Card Company
I took the time to re-create all of the face cards and pips in the deck. I gave the pips an older styling but kept the classic red and black color way. The face cards were redrawn and updated. I took a lot of the old details out and cleaned up the design and helped make the court card faces simpler and more realistic.

The back design proudly displays the Saguaro cactus icon design on Dusty Blue - chosen to represent the haze of the desert days. This simple back design was revised several times to get things just right. Color adjustments, sizing and resizing the cactus icon, no detail was overlooked when completing any of this decks design elements.

I was hopeful when I saw the title of the thread because for some reason I think a cactus themed deck would be cool. But this isn't it. Too minimal.

So this is an obvious pass, but I LOVE the inclusion of a cut card. For those who play poker, cut cards or cover cards are the most obvious/easiest add-on or stretch goal that I feel should be included in just about any campaign. A good quality, long-lasting, plastified card that displays a designer’s own branding could potentially last a lot longer than any deck and provide free advertisement for said designer. Just something I think we should see A LOT more.

So this is sth that I'm definitely NOT gonna pick up. Nonetheless, I still feel that the creator has put in effort to modify the faces enough to take away the boredom of Bicycle standard faces. The court faces are all redrawn at least:

Font and indices are also a lot sharper and modern than normal, seen in Kier's review here:

(Scribbles furiously) Definitely making note of this :D

It looks like the cut card in this case is actually part of the deck, just the 56th card (55 is a double-backer.) Does that change anything for you?

As someone who used to deal poker professionally, a good cut card is a big deal. If it were me, I would not include it inside the actual deck - but have it as a "gift". You can print it with your branding/logo or in the same style of the deck - but the goal is for the cut card to be used. So even if you deck is on the shelf, the deck currently being used will be cut with your cut card displaying your logo/brand. This is a common thing when you purchase plastic playing cards as those are really meant to be used for serious playing over an extended length of time. I keep all of mine in one of my wooden card caddies, as shown below.

I would recommend that you possibly create a few designs. The first one being for your brand/logo and series agnostic. This would be something you can toss in a box on every order as a gift/thank you. If it is cool and vibrant and looks good, it will get used, even if your deck isn't. Then, you could make more for each series of decks you create as a gift, stretch goal, etc. They cannot be expensive to make since a 100-count block of colored cuts are $30 at Spinettis. https://spinettisgaming.com/collections ... -size-size .

Yeah, I am definitely going to look into this for my own projects. Thanks for the insight! :D

On topic, The cactus itself is a pleasing design, and I really dig the ace of clubs. But those courts are a big no for me. I don't know if it's a borderline-trypophobic thing for me or that it reminds me of grossly shaven cartoon skin, but... I'm skeeved out. I'm *sure* that I am in the absolute minority for reasoning on this one

Edit: I've looked a fair bit and I can't find anyone making custom cut cards except one place that charges $14 for ONE
Buuuuut I do have access to a laser :geek:

I agree that the cactus is a pleasing design, but they could have done so much more with the courts and incorporating the theme into them. As for the grossly shaven cartoon skin, are you referring to their clothes and the dotted pattern on them? If so, it is very strange looking, but not enough to skeeve me out

Yeah, it does. Cut cards should not be of the same stock as the cards being used for play, nor of the same color. Contrast is the name of the game. Sturdy plastic cards with bright colours do the trick just fine.

This. Make it an add-on.

You lot crack me up. That's exactly why I added it on this thread though.

The first deck is superior in my opinion. I'm not bedazzled by the colors on this one in particular but there's still something going on here. I think he's just shy of keying in on to. . . well that's another deck. This design isn't bad and has potential. If it's clip art, if it's not clip art, doesn't matter either way. This still has more effort in it than some that have funded recently. Not to mention, they got hats and merch on a separate shop, not the kickstarter campaign! That alone makes me hope this campaign funds. :)
