Killekort

Unread post by Räpylätassu »

So I got these decks like two years ago from Sweden as a by product of getting my White Whale at the time, the Turku Castle Playing Cards from the 1940's. I really don't know anything about them, they are Swedish, they are old, they are made by a Swedish playing card company called Öberg. They seem to be called "Killekort", I know enough swedish to know that kille means "a boy" and kort means "a card". I got two of them, they are both the same decks, except the color and the tuck box. Oh, and these are not our typical 52 card playing cards.

Okay from now, all the cards you see here are from the brown deck. You see, this deck has a one suit, pip cards from number 1-12, some cards that I think are court (?) cards. Oh and there's two of each card. I didn't take pictures of all the pip cards but you get the idea, one suit, two of each

So could somebody shed some light on these? :D Jarl Ratledge? Tom?

There is a wikipedia page on them but it's all in jätte hejsan hurren durren language, which I don't speak because I was lazy in school and hated learning a language I had absolutely no use in my everyday life.

Member zompetti has them on his wishlist on P52, I contacted him about these and he asked some pictures of the tuck boxes, I sent them to him email but haven't heard back from him yet. I for sure have no real use for them and I am more than willing to trade them/sell them if somebody wants them but I will wait to hear from zompetti first.

Kille in this context doesn't mean the same thing as the usual Swedish word kille (boy). It is usually actually pronounced differently --- kille the cards have a soft k (as expected from the spelling), whereas kille for boy has a hard k like karl (also boy). It may be derived from the word Harlekin / Harlequin which you can see is the name of one of the cards.

This is the best summary of the kille cards in English that I know of:
http://cards.old.no/c/k/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can read more about the related Italian / German / Danish / Norwegian games also on the same site:
http://cards.old.no/c/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When I lived in Sweden a few years ago, there were two manufacturers making Kille cards: Obergs and Offason, I believe that is still the case. You could get them in normal shops alongside normal playing cards (I mean like Pressbyrå / Akademiska Bokhandel / ICA etc). You can certainly still get the related cards in Italy (Cu Cu), certainly not Germany (Hexenspiel / Vogelspiel), and I don't know about Denmark / Norway (Gnav).

I don't know anything about this deck, but I'd be happy to translate that wikipedia page for you (Swedish is similar enough to Norwegian that most of us can understand it). Not sure when I'll have time, but probably some time during the next week :)

Could you not run it through Google Translate https://translate.google.com/translate? ... rev=search

I ran a quick image search as well, found a few hits in Pinterest etc. But also here https://translate.google.com/translate? ... rev=search

Hope that helps...

Hi, I found this thread looking around the web for some Kille cards. I know it's an old thread, but is there any chance you're still holding onto those cards and willing to sell, Räpylätassu?

Yeah, unfortunately Roope has been MIA for quite some time now, though I do hope he returns. I miss him, too!

Yeah I still have them and I have no problem on selling them. Send me a PM, let's hash out the details.

Also I haven't that active lately, I want to get back to here more and I gradually will as I finally got a new job last summer and starting this year I'm finally getting more hours on it so all of my money doesn't go from hand to mouth. I need to finally get all the decks I have at your place Sherman :lol: I can afford the shipping now, I'll send you a PM soon.

Still here, still alive :ugdance:
