Hey guys! Red Fox Playing Cards here. I can definitely answer this question, which seems to be the concern of a few on this board. I can't speak for other card designers, but I can fill you in on why our deck is designed this way. It will be a bit of a long post, but it doesn't really scratch the surface as there is so much to say.
You are right in that there are standard "looking" courts and others not. If you look closely at the details, they are only
similar to standard courts which was our goal. Take the Jack of Clubs for example, which has a hot dog collar, a snake, fish, and hints of lego and minecraft etc. This card is dedicated to my son. The Queen of clubs has a cupcake, princess slippers rainbow etc. and and is dedicated to my daughter. I'm on the King of hearts, my wife on the Queen of hearts, and yes, Chris Ramsay(My fellow Canadian) is the king of clubs - look closer and you can see his deconstructed logo, puzzle pieces and lightning bolts for his new Tesla. The rest of the courts at the moment are not dedicated to anyone, but all of their design is in line with artwork on the back, and their faces have been modified for a bit of a younger look. We wanted courts that were personal to what we wanted, but at the same time recognizable courts that could be used in magic and game play(as there is an unmarked version of this deck as well).
We have plans for future designs utilizing the Red Fox logo and fox with a total revamp of the back, jokers, and Ace. The pip cards will stay the same, and the courts will get a bit of a makeover to match the new design, but the cards that are dedicated to people will remain so, and not only that, we will be adding dedicated courts. The original courts tell a story, our story, and future decks will be a progression of our story. We could have made all the faces similar to standard, but it wouldn't be our story.
When my wife started drawing this design back in January, I didn't even know what Kickstarter was(I thought it was a charity fundraising site). My wife dedicated 4 of the courts to our family and the plan was to print maybe a dozen decks or so for myself and my own magic needs. As time went on, Chris Ramsay became a part of our deck for multiple reasons and we realized there was a demand for our cards. Next year someone by the name of Richard Bellars will be joining the ranks because of how he has been a part of this campaign.
I will not simply be adding "famous" magicians because they are famous to the courts. We are only adding those that are a part of why Red Fox is what it is.
I totally get that the custom courts might not be everybody's cup of tea, nothing ever is. My wife's favorite food is lobster, where as I would not eat lobster if you offered me $1000. At least we agree on our card design, haha. By the looks of the campaign, it looks like alot of other people agree with us as well, which I am truly thankful for.
With that said, hopefully that gives you all some insight.
Buy or don't buy them and lets still be friends
And yes, you can trust a Canadian
