I signed up anyway lol

They are essentially different styles. The Players has a cigarette vibe. The Bicycle series will be more of a Tally-Ho vibe and Bicycle branded. I hope they are going to use Clove Street Press tucks.

Not to knock his work at all, it's mostly just not for me, but it has to be said that it's never been a better time for one's wallet to not be a KWP fan/completionist ;). There's what, 3+ versions of like 20 decks a year now, not including kickstarters? Just subscribing to all three subscriptions is more than my budget for everything lol.

$6 per month for these and $6 for Table series. That's 12 decks per year at an average of $12 per deck, shipped. Not to mention 6 of them will be Bicycle-branded. I'm in!

I recently, and reluctantly, cancelled my Kings Wild Shorts subscription; the sub itself was affordable, especially since the delayed international shipping was introduced, but I was starting to get hit by customs for every delivery. At first it was for multiple-deck parcels but the last three single decks got caught in the net, too.

On a related note, justplaycards and I teamed up on a pair of Omnia Supremas and customs slapped us with a charge that equalled nearly 50% of the decks' price. That hurt, like, a lot.

I agree, although I'm just new to the short subs and using delayed international shipping at the moment, I've been charged additionally by customs on one KWP order and one AoP order. Though this isn't the brands' problem, but in the long run international (or maybe UK) members will back off from US orders. I'm still speculating how my latest KWP delayed package will cost me, but if I get hit with the same customs as Tim did, I'd probably cancel too.

For US folks who can't take expensive shipping, here's an example:
Ordered: Moving Sale (LTD Tiger Edition + Gilded Tiger Silver Edition) for $52
KWP Shipping: 2-7 Deck, First Class International for $24
Custom charges hit: £18.12 (£10.12 import VAT + £8 handling fee)

If I'm using current USD-GBP exchange rate to sum up, that's $99.5 for these two decks.

I also seem to be getting hit with Import taxes on every KWP shipment.

Here's a good example:

I wouldn't care so much if it was for a brick or so but this was for 3 decks.
That's an additional $60+ on top of what I paid for the decks & shipping fees :(

As a result i'm also considering dropping my subscription in the new year.

Can we start a movement to make decks of playing cards be classified as "books"? Would solve a lot of problems.

Playing cards have always gotten a bad rap which goes back to treating it like a “sin” tax. This has no place in the collectible card world, where a lot of us rarely even open and play with these cards. They also hardly qualify as a luxury like a Rolex watch. I guess “books” are studious and “good”, so favorable taxation. Playing cards = gambling, so very bad. Rare coins over a certain value (I think $200) are sales tax exempt in Texas.

Is the limit for customs fees in the US just a lot higher? Are there any other countries that don't have customs fees? It's unbelievable :o

The USA doesn't have any Taxes on playing cards (Not sure why), Not sure about Canada but I think every other country in the world has a specific Import tax related to playing cards. :(

How do GW do it ? Rarely get import tax from them, Is KWP able to operate in the same way ?
have had big parcels from DB and T11 with minimal import tax : )

The worst thing about customs and shipping this side of the pond is that a lot of the decks I love were designed and printed in Europe. Only to then be shipped to the US so I can wait a couple of weeks for them to arrive, pay much higher delivery fees and pay customs to bring them back.

I would of thought that the European market was big enough now to warrant a fulfilment center in Europe. Especially now Cartamundi Own USPCC.

This is why I love Lotrek :D

I should also tip my hat to Lorenzo / Gentleman Wake for shipping the Parlour decks from Germany. :ugdance:

I have always been wary of the delayed shipping programme as whatever you save on shipping, you would surely lose in customs fees. Hence, I never signed up for one.

As for the difference between GW and KWP, I think the answer is pretty straightforward: GW usually indicates a nominal price on their packages (like $2-4) whereby JR’s packages indicate full price of the relevant decks.

I cannot really blame JR for doing this - after all, misrepresenting the actual value of the package is akin to committing a customs fraud but it still hurts. I have the option of choosing between the UK and Russia (as I commute between the two for work) when it comes to delivery and, in case of the latter, the taxable threshold is much higher but even then my 2 ltd + 3 std + 2 gilded monthly packages is making me nervous (as combined with other deliveries they may bring me over the threshold).

Wait until the UK leaves the EU as then any EU-friendly shipping will have to become UK friendly shipping. That is going to be messy.

so nominal price indication $2 to $4 I would imagine is legal ? otherwise GW would be in trouble ?

Agreed, I believe the difference is that GW lists the production cost whereas KWP lists the retail value :(

GW isn't always amazing. Sometimes they randomly use UPS and when they do I not only get billed customs charge of 20% they also charge an additional handling fee and hold my package hostage until I pay it. Last time it was £10.50 extra handling which is insane considering I'm already paying for shipping.

I did some quick Googling - in the US, it looks like most personal imports incur no duty below $800 (or maybe it's $2,000? the website is confusing  ) -- in the UK, you have to pay VAT on gifts over £39 and other goods over £15 :o

52 Wonders is a playing card retailer that just happens to have a storage large enough to help with EU shipping.

Not sure it is but do not think that they really care as they ship in bulk. However, it is also true that we cannot ask JR to lower the stated prices of his decks.

I am not asking JR to do anything I am only trying to understand how some companies can and some cant or some do and some dont..

I do have a subcription and if i "need the decks quickly" i will suffer the consequences as much as id rather not ....Its very rare that i need decks quickly lol

I have signed up to the delayed shipping and interested to see the difference between 1 month and 3months worth

With the taxable threshold in the UK being so low, the way I see it is that, with delayed shipping, the only thing you are likely to save on is the 8 quid admin fee (which I think is charged per package rather than per deck).

I can't speak for every country because I certainly don't care for their laws but from a EU perspective; It is illegal - it is called tax evasion (which, as an anarchist, I highly recommend, endorse and support, but that's another topic :D ).
The thing is the US, where GW is, doesn't care because it is not their money because only the country of the receipient collects the taxes and for the country collecting the taxes it is hard to proof if there is no bill attached. So Jackson, the law-abiding citizen he is, declares the parcels correctly and GW and others do not.
A nominal value is only allowed when the parcel containes a gift, therefore Kickstarter rewards are kind of a grey area since they are not directly purchased according to the terms of Kickstarter, so there it would be legal again to declare only the nominal value.
