Re: Bicycle Insignia Back Playing Cards / KS
I...I don't get it. If Bicycle wanted a Bicycle branded deck, wouldn't Bicycle just make one? Are they licensed to put out a deck with this branding? Am I overthinking this?

As a stretch goal, they are going to add the words "Rider Back" to the backs.

Re: Bicycle Insignia Back Playing Cards / KS
They're pretty expensive too for cards with standard courts and a back that seems like it took 5 minutes to design...

Re: Bicycle Insignia Back Playing Cards / KS (wap)
Brent Braun here owner of The Magic Firm. I’m new here but wanted to be available to answer any questions. Yes we have acquired the licensing from USPCC to release the Bicycle Insignia Backs. It’s a simple design but what we loved about it was that traditionally Bicycle Branded cards have always been busy and scrolly. We wanted to create a deck that had a modern clean feel but the Bicycle Logo.
As well as something that was
suited for game night with friends, fantastic for magicians and stunning for cardistry.
We were as surprised as anyone to find out this simple design had never been done and excited when USPCC gave us the green light.
Early bird is $5 a deck when you buy a dozen and includes free shipping worldwide.
This is our first deck of playing cards but once successful we plan to launch another campaign in the fall. You can see a sneak peek of what we are calling Bicycle Insignia Rider Back Playing Cards below.

Re: Bicycle Insignia Back Playing Cards / KS
There is absolutely nothing in this deck that is attractive or can persuade me to buy one. I like simple decks but this is just lazy.

Sorry, not sorry, but this project is one of the biggest pieces of crap to ever stink up both Kickstarter and this forum. The "design" (if you wanna call it that) has 0 redeeming qualities and you should be ashamed of disgracing your parents' name with this utterly useless s^&*fest.brentbraunmagic wrote:Brent Braun here owner of The Magic Firm. Re: Bicycle Insignia Back Playing Cards / KS
Does "ANYONE WORLDWIDE" want these? These aren't lazy, they are minimalist for cardistry. It's a style.
I get what they are going for I suppose, but most of us at UC are quite a bit more discerning in our tastes than ANYONE else.
This is an easy hard pass for me... dawg.

When I opened the thread I thought for a sec that the page hadn’t loaded completly and waited for the back design to reveal itself... still waiting
In all seriousness, the price is fair and I like the idea. No back design is still better than a shitty back design. And there are a ton of them out there with Bicycle branding. I even would pick some up; unfortunately has Lotrek my wallet under siege...
P.S.: The “Rider Back” though - is even for my forgiving a bit too far of a strech.

BrentBraunMagic: What you're doing here is very meta. If you're doing it with a sense of irony, then my proverbial hat is off to you. Well done, mate. It seems to me, the only way to top this would be to have a black deck like this labeled in white type, "The Red Deck."
I swear, if you do that, I'll buy a pair, and send one to my friend who is colorblind. Because, that's how I roll.

I actually like the Bicycle logo back - if it were put out directly by USPCC I think it'd have a much less chilly reception

Also, I would LOVE to go to a colorblind friend's house for a game of poker where he breaks out his clearly not-red deck labelled "The Red Deck" on every card. I'd like to see everyone keep a straight face for as long as they can.
My eyes bugged out a little at the "Rider Back" design. They're Rider Backs that aren't Rider Backs, because they have no rider backs...

Re: Bicycle Insignia Back Playing Cards / KS
My favorite part in the campaign was the paragraph entitled "Other Colors? YES"
I would have answered "OH HELL NO".
Have you guys seen the limited edition? You're gonna love this one:

Once each of those colors is unlocked, our next stretch goal will be a super special, ultra limited version of the White deck in a special box. This box will have no printing at all on the front or back. Instead, it will have the Bicycle logo stamped with blind sculpted embossing so that you can see and FEEL it.

I am not sure that is very true here. I feel that no matter the company or printer involved here these would have elicited just as much as it has.hsbc wrote:I actually like the Bicycle logo back - if it were put out directly by USPCC I think it'd have a much less chilly reception

I actually like these a lot. I understand they look a lot like the much hated fontaines and other lazy decks, but if there is any hype I can get behind its Bicycle hype!

Re: Bicycle Insignia Back Playing Cards / KS
Calling this a custom deck is insulting. This deck looks to have even less effort than Anyone decks because the creator didn't even design the logo being used. How is this considered a fresh look and feel? Is it not printed by USPCC? Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of folks out there who will back a hype deck. Just don't try to sell it as some brilliant concept.The Magic Firm wrote:After 130 years the classic Bicycle playing card gets a modern, sophisticated, and fresh look & feel.
Bicycle Insignia Back is the first custom deck of playing cards from The Magic Firm.
Do you see any difference?

Some of you guys are killing me.
And I'm sure that's intentional...
Don't get me wrong, I like the Bicycle logo, but not ON THIS PIECE OF CRAP DECK. Jabronis.

WOW!!!!
Fully funded in only 16.5 hours. Thank you for all the support. It means more to us than you all could ever know.
If you haven’t backed it yet there is still time and hopefully we can meet some of those stretch goals.

Not only has this “lazy” KS Creator won this thread, he has also won at capitalism. This project:
Takes the logo of the best-known brand in its field (Bicycle);
Puts that logo on the very product (playing cards) that made it world-famous;
Gets the brand’s own manufacturer (USPCC) to produce it to its own top quality standards;
Markets the product on the world’s leading creative website (KickStarter);
Has a specialist handle sales orders and banking (BackerKit);
Gets a distribution company to distribute it;
Provokes a load of metaphorical monkeys to throw poop at each other on an internet forum (UC) for publicity;
Obtains an effectively limitless and inexpensive source of advertising and promotional materials (give-away decks of cards) for the creator’s real business;
All while taking such a subtle swipe at the card-collecting community that it almost doesn’t even notice.
I wish I were clever enough to be this lazy. The KS Creator’s biography claims he is a magic “Creative Consultant”. He, quite literally, teaches this stuff, and y’all got schooled !
Jabronis ? Maybe, but this KS Creator must be the Vince McMahon.

Re: Bicycle Insignia Back Playing Cards / KS
I couldn't care less if this deck sells well. There are plenty of hype decks that kill it on the market and this launch is obviously no different. We're talking about design and this deck falls short of even a basic effort. This is a perfect example of capitalism being the goal, rather than creating something unique and custom. You can say the creator "won" this thread all you want, but you are missing the point of the criticism on this thread.
I also think your effort to keep score and antagonize is misguided.

Re: Bicycle Insignia Back Playing Cards / KS
Keep score and antagonise ?
Did I say “not ON THIS PIECE OF CRAP DECK. Jabronis.” ?
Or “This couldn't be more useless.” ?
What about “Sorry, not sorry, but this project is one of the biggest pieces of crap to ever stink up both Kickstarter and this forum. The "design" (if you wanna call it that) has 0 redeeming qualities and you should be ashamed of disgracing your parents' name with this utterly useless s^&*fest.” ?
Are those statements not antagonistic ? But these comments are from seasoned UC members… Oh, I see my mistake now – newbies “keep score and antagonise” while older members are witty and impudent. Others can introduce the concept of "winning" without censure, but a newbie running with the theme ? Obviously "misguided".
And who says this forum is solely about “design” ? If other members can post cartoon gif’s at each other ad infinitum, I can offer my reasoned opinion on the rationale behind the deck, not just it’s “design”.
And I think there is a difference between this and other hype decks - or at least there is a wit and sly knowing-ness about the project. It is poking fun at the very phenomenon that it is taking advantage of, and that is a very clever trick to pull off and make money at the same time, hence the "win". Others here on UC have alluded to the "very, very, subtle sarcasm" and "sarcastic" posts of the creator, not just me. One can appreciate the skilful execution of an exercise without necessarily approving of the exercise or its effects.
The point I was making was that any criticism of this deck’s design is itself misguided. It is like criticising a Ferrari for not having a big boot and cupholders – that is not what a Ferrari is for. If you want a big boot and cupholders, buy a Volvo, but don’t assume because I point out the lack of cupholders, that I don’t want a Ferrari too.
