Vanda Standard? (based on Aladdin dome-back design)

Unread post by davegk »

Hey guys,

I came across the Aladdin dome-back design recently and I think it's super interesting. I wanted to rework it a little and have been playing with it...I'm considering using it as a back design for what I might call the Vanda Standard deck. Curious what you think...

Really solid variation on the Aladdins, David. I think the lines are elegant and I especially like the star icon in the middle. The only thing that is a bit off is the stretching vs. contracting of the arrow-snake symbol. I don't think it looks as nice when it's stretched, compared to normal or compressed. It's not a huge issue and I think this is a classy and fantastic look for a flagship standard deck. Thanks for sharing this!

Another version I've been working on...using the symbol from the ace of clubs on the original Vanda deck...

I like the main design, but the images in the objects just doesn't scream Arabic design to me. The third is a bit better. I do like how you scale the design to give the cards perspective.

Looks like the Aladdin vintage back has a renaissance lately :D . I like that.

The second aliteration is really good. I like the depth and the plasticity; although I prefer the shape/dimension of the inner ornament details on the first aliteration and the original. The details on the tiles in the second draft are nice, but not mind-blowing yet, imo. Overall the second design is my favorite. Could be my first Vanda deck; depending on printer/price.

The last design is faded towards the middle, but I wonder if this design might lend itself to being faded at the edges and utilising stinger back borders? Just a thought.

Personally I'm not a fan of the fading to edge look...it reminds me of early web design when people learned how to use basic photoshop features and created a lot of objects with bad looking fades to background colors :p

I'm actually liking the most recent version a lot, especially given the history of that symbol within the Vanda brand. I've added some details on the center area for comparison. And here's an idea for the front of the tuckbox...

Nice clean look on those, Dave. I think I prefer the second one with the slightly smaller star icon, but they both look great.

Perhaps you could consider streamlining the name "Vanda Standard" to just...Vandard :ugthink: :ugdance:

Very cool look with the black and white. Now you have Vandard and Vandemium. Make it happen.

I also really like the standard. The premium gets pretty boring in black and white though, based on the name some foil would do it good ;)

The standard would have standard USPC tucks and be priced very reasonably. The premium would have metallic inks on the cards and an upgraded tuckbox with foil/embossing/etc. It's a little hard to see from this image but the back design for Premium has silver metallic ink decoration that will be much easier to see when printed.

I've been fleshing this out a bit more...I think I will modify the court cards from the Earth deck since they're essentially a stylized version of the standard courts...and the Supreme edition would be gold paper box with embossed white foil and perhaps the cards could be gold foiled by Cartamundi (I'll have to look into this more)...

I would love to see a real standard looking box on these; like the back design at the back of the tuck and the front with a nice branding.

I love the work on your court card, Dave. These all look pretty classy and I like the different tiers you have planned.
...and the Supreme edition would be gold paper box with embossed white foil and perhaps the cards could be gold foiled by Cartamundi (I'll have to look into this more)...
I think this would be the best way to differentiate the Supreme deck from the others. Nice work!

Now we have...Vandard...Vandemium...and Vandupreme

The number cards would be standard and I'm using a cleaned up version of standard Bicycle pips (notice the club in particular).

Also, the courts would be colored for premium and supreme decks... plus a red back version to have 2 standard colors

Question: what would you expect to pay for this standard deck if it came in a standard USPC tuckbox?

Also: would you prefer to have a standard deck in standard USPC packaging, or pay a few dollars more for a higher quality tuckbox (knowing that either way the Premium version would be available in a higher quality tuck as well)?

Also, tuckbox mockup...

This would be with red/blue paper and white foil (+ maybe embossing)

Loving everything I'm seeing! Given that your courts are fully custom, I'd probably expect to pay $12 - $13 for the standard, but would be thrilled if it were cheaper. I'd prefer the cheaper tuckbox on the standard, as that isn't an emphasis for me and I'd still have a premium version to own.

My plan at the moment is to launch with just the blue deck initially and then the red, premium, and supreme would be stretch goals

I'd like to keep the pledge tiers very very simple this time so I'm thinking:

1 [standard] deck - $8 [+ $4 US / $8 INTL]
[EARLY] 6 decks - $42 [ +$12 US / $24 INTL]
[EARLY] 12 decks - $75 [ + $24 US / $32 INTL]
[EARLY] 24 decks - $135 [ + $48 US / $58 INTL]

Add-ons:
Standard - $8 US / $10 INTL
Premium (when unlocked) - $12 US / $15 INTL

If Supreme is unlocked then I'll create special tiers for that (I need to iron out pricing a bit on this still)

I think the pricing is fantastic and because a lot of folks will likely get multiple decks for everyday use, the pricing gets even better. Not to mention foil on the tuck and potential embossing for a standard deck? Slam dunk, in my opinion.

Agreed on the pricing. For these types of decks, I think effort should be made to keep costs low and make them as affordable as possible.
BaconWise wrote:get multiple decks for everyday use
Because, surely, isn't this the whole point of "standard" decks? No, nothing's going to beat mass-produced Bikes, but if "standards" are priced as high as all other custom decks, then why bother at all?

PS. Not calling you out, Bacon, quoting you was just a good transition into my rhetorical questions.

PPS. Sorry for calling you Shirley.

I'm leaning towards going with standard USPC tucks for the standard editions to keep costs lower. So, no embossing on standard decks...but if we can get the premium and supreme editions unlocked then you'll be in business :)

Ahhh yes that's the good stuff :D

I'd also consider changing the R in "premium" to match the R in "standard," at least the top part (I'd reverse the bottom curly part since it's towards the front of the word) - right now it looks sort of like PKEMIUM to me
