Norppalive is a hugely popular live stream from Finland by WWF, coming every spring. The stars of the show are Saimaa Ringed Seals that are native to the large lake Saimaa of Finland, the only place where the species exists. The most popular of the norppa's is Pullervo, named after the tragic hero Kullervo from Kalevala and from the word "pullea" which means plump. The norppa's stop spending time on the rocks of Saimaa when the summer arrives so these are the last few days of this year where you can see these fat cuties.

Some highlights from 2018:

One highlight from last year:

EDIT: This years Norppalive stream updated to this post!

Apperantly Pullervo spends most of his time on a different stone and it is right next to the one the camera is on but it is not visible in the shot.

I don't know how they calculate on which stone to put the camera in but apperantly norppas mainly like to spend their time on the same stones year after year so I wonder why Pullervo is on a completely other stone currently, he has shown himself for only 3 times this spring.

Come back to us Pullervo :(

There are actually just under 400 of these Saimaa seals left in the world. That however is a good thing because the population is growing, humans have managed to save them from extinction. There is a famous song written in 1982 called "Vanhojapoikia viiksekkäitä" where there is a rather sad line "Suuri Saimaa mut sata on hylkeitä vaan, kohta jäljellä ei ehkä ainuttakaan." which translates to "Saimaa is grand but there are only a hundred seals left, soon there might not be a single one left."

I love it when you share Finnish (or any, really) culture, Roope.

You're a true beaut.

We had really sunny and warm weekend, now it's not rainy but cloudy.

It sucks that Pullervo seems to be a no-show, he is spending time on an another rock that is just nearby to the one with the camera according to the WWF.

Hahaha, the seals are all like, "you had your fun the last couple of years, now respect our privacy!". I didn't saw a seal in the live feed 'till this day. :|

It's already dark so it's hard to see her but that PHAT CUTIE is still on the rock!

Now it is so dark that it's impossible to tell if she is or isn't there. Sun rises in just 3 hours and that is when the sun is fully above the horizon line so we should be able to see if she is in there in just about 2 hours or so.

I hope we get to see her tomorrow as well, or perhaps Pullervo will finally show up!

So norppalive opened last year 7th of May so in about a month we should be able to see these THICC bois back on the rocks again.

I'll post the livestream when it opens again, once again it should last about a month.

Norppalive 2021 opened yesterday! There were two norppas on lounging on the rocks the entire day basically, the other one confirmed to being the fan favorite Pullervo. It's currently the middle of the night here so you can't see anything at the moment, however offical sunrise near northern parts of lake Saimaa is around 4.30 am today (6th of May) and only gets earlier each day so the darkness of the stream doesn't last that long.

Also, this year WWF added a sound to the stream so you can hear the water hitting the rocks, the occasional bird in the distance and of course the sounds the norppas make, like scratching away their winter fur.

The best reality tv show in the world right here folks.

Also eastern Finland is about to be hit by a massive snow storm during this thursday-friday (basically all the snow has already melted), I'm not sure how it hits lake Saimaa. Early next week should be +20 and sunny however
