How do 'you' play poker?

Unread post by robcan0630 »

Growing up, poker was played almost every weekend by my family. Everyone met at my grandparents' house on Sunday to eat, visit and play cards with my grandfather. Now as an adult, my immediate family still gets together and plays poker every few weeks. Nickel ante with dime max, so no big stakes, just good fun. However, back when this started, hold'em was not the popular game it is now. No one in my family played hold'em back then and we rarely play it today. The games we play now are the same games I grew up watching my family play. The deal is passed around the table clock-wise and the dealer calls the game and decides if any cards will be wild. When we do have wild cards, it's generally deuces and one-eyed jacks. I've often wondered if anyone else plays the same games we play or maybe even variations of them (as I know several exist). So, what forms / variations of poker do you play?
  • Five-card draw
  • Jacks or better, Trips to win (variation of five-card draw with minimums for opening and winning the pot)
  • Seven-card stud
  • Follow the queen (variation on seven-card stud where queens dealt determines wild cards)
  • Low hole, roll your own (variation on seven-card stud where all cards are dealt face down and you discard one card each turn to determine your own wild card based on the lowest card in hand)
  • Seven card no peek
I feel like I'm forgetting a couple, but this is our main rotation.

Sorry for being boring :D but Texas Holde'em it is.

In Europe Poker isn't that popular. It is hard to find any life action tables anyway. Older people here play totally different card games for money. In the early 2000's there was the poker boom and Texas Hold'em became almost the only poker variant, that people know here. So if you play poker in Europe it is mostly Texas Hold'em.
But I prefer Texas Hold'em for gambling anyways, since you see 3/5 of the hand of your opponent so it is easier to calculate your risk. I think this is aswell the main reason why this variant became that popular.
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

These days, it's mostly tournament Texas Hold 'em, but in home games I've played in the past, it's usually been dealer's choice which has included:

7-card stud
Baseball
Basketball
Detroit Wheel
Criss-cross
Low hole roll your own
Chase the Ace, Bury the (ahem) Queen
High Chicago
Low Chicago

And various high/low split versions of the above. :)
