Crowdfunded book projects

Unread post by guru »

I'm looking into crowdfunded projects with books as add-ons or main reward. Hanami Hanafuda, Sisterhood of the blood and Arcana comes on top of my mind.
If you can share any other kickstarter campaign names with a book as an add-on or a main reward, it'll be great. I'm researching at the moment and might contact the creators in future, so these details are going to help me.

Rick Davidson's Origins project included a book.

I think Gio's original Delirium Prism project may have included a booklet. Not sure.

Uusi included a book in one or two of their last projects. Pagan's Tarot in particular leaps to mind, although I didn't pick any of those up, so I'm not sure. I know they did it for at least one or two projects, though, because I recall really wanting one but not being able to pull the trigger.

RL (Robert) Tomlinson had a booklet as part of his Titanic project, if I recall correctly. But, again, I may be mis-remembering.

Thanks Allan. It helps, now I've got a few more names.

I've done booklets too but this time it is going to be a paperback or hardcover book, and just looking to see who has done it before so that I can learn from them.

Yeah, then Uusi is your best bet. Rick Davidson's book is also nice, but it is more of a big booklet rather than a small book. But, yeah, those two are the two you want to hunt first, I think.

The Culminus campaign also had a good booklet option. I don’t normally get them, but I got this one and it was really good. A free booklet comes with Allen Benoit’s Cartomancer deck.

I just remembered my Gypsy Witch fortune telling playing cards (traditional 52 card deck) also has a booklet explaining how to use it for fortune telling.

Start with Jody Eklund's Black Ink projects. More than 1/2 came with booklets, with his Iron Horse project being based off a short story written by his friend. You had to buy the story though as it wasn't free.

Don't Kill the Messenger came with an awesome booklet that included maps and real historical pictures or drawings to accompany the project. He gave the booklet free on PDF just recently before the project even ended!

Other projects that I can recall :
Wylie's Wicked Kingdom
Natalia Silva's Avalon
Chao by MPC : Free booklet for boxed sets
Pinocchio and Inferno by Passione ( Pinocchio has 2 booklets!)
6th Extinction by Roz Gibson. Book was an add-on.
Ragnarok and Midgard Playing Cards by Nicolai
Caribbean Wind by SVI

Edit: Forgot to mention Wasteland Alice by Steven Smith. Cool A4 sized coloring book with the courts and map of the wasteland.
Not sure if it counts but JR also plans to release a coloring book to add to his Labyrinth Short Subs deck.

Yes, Delirium had a booklet :) I have few copies of that left and I include sometimes in big Delirium orders from http://www.thirdwayindustries.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and orders shipped from Italy

Thanks all for your comments.

I've done small booklets myself thrice (came with Divine Art deck, Bharata Major Arcana and Kalevala), but this time it is a paperback book (around 80-100 pages), and I am looking to find vendors who can print self-published book as a sample or with moq like 200-300. I am not sure if any book printer gives a low moq for printing. I will try asking some of the creators above through PMs to see if they can share some lessons learned while getting a book published or can share vendor names who can do this type of work and print a book with certain quantity.

Please advise.

Thanks guys...I've decided to go with Lulu for printing the book. Got the name referred by a few in the office, so let's see.
