United Cardists 2019 Annual Deck

Unread post by Räpylätassu »

De Novo a ka The United Cardists 2018 deck should be completed soon and 2018 is already in halfway so should there be the announcment for the artist that is going to design the UC deck of 2019 soon? I thought I'd open this thread for general speculation and so that people could give their thoughts on next years designer, given that Mike hasn't decided him/her yet.

I could start with the obvious: I hope for Lorenzo. He seems to publish 1 project + 1 Ravn every year and we know that the next project seems to be a new Ravn pair, so maybe the next big project could be the UC 2019 deck? Gemini is my favorite deck and was the best designed deck I had ever seen, until The House of the Rising Spade was released. Also Lorenzo has not designed a UC annual deck, so now would be a great time :D

As for other possible names I would like to see: Sunish, Passione team, Kirk Slater and montenzi. As a wild card: A custom deck produced with the VXD's technology.

Let me know your thoughts!

I dream of a world where wars are fought only by having dance offs. I also dream that a Finnish playing card designer would exist. The former seems more likely to happend.

JR was my favorite artist/designer for years. Lorenzo's been at the top of my list since the beginning of 2017. I would love to see what he'd come up with for this project. He's still well-involved on the forums, too.

I'd like to see more from Sunish before handing him the reigns to a UC deck. Everything he's done has been good, and he's also a great contributor to the site, but I'd just like to see a bigger resume.

Passione Team is a good choice. It seems like they're gearing up for a lot of new campaigns/releases. They might have too much on their plate for the 2019 deck.

Kirk Slater is too one-dimensional for me.

I'd also like to see more from Montenzi before nominating him to design a UC deck.

I know that large resumes are not a prerequisite for making a UC deck, but obviously it's nicer to put the project into the hands of an artist with a lot of success and creative variations. Other than Kirk Slater, I wouldn't be put-off by any of the other names being selected to design the 2019 UC Deck.

Well, I would definitely be excited if Lorenzo designed the 2019 UC Deck given he is my favorite card artist. That is not to say that there are not a lot of other very talented deck artists. I generally agree with TwoPiece's assessments above.

I guess I would also drool if somehow we got a VXD licensed holograph deck. Oh, and let Lorenzo design the deck. I can dream. :ugthink:

There are a number of very talented playing card artists. Heck, seeing the Timothy Curtis deck opened a whole new area of talented street art design decks. Not the scribble stuff, but I mean some really neat and colorful street card art inspired decks would be a neat take I could get behind.

Twopiece, I don't think Kirk Slater is one-dimensional, he hasn't released that many decks yet. The Coven was a solid, pretty good first deck. The Sistherhood of Blood vol 1 was amazing and is one of the most underrated custom decks IMO. The Sisterhood of Blood vol 2 hasn't been completed yet and those are the only decks Kirk has released. I really like everything he has done so far and I am eagerly looking foward to what he might design next - saying he is one-dimensional is baloney as we haven't seen enough from him yet.

There might be some words missing and typos in that message, writing this while being French style thin afternoon-drunk.

Well, he's designed - successfully or otherwise - 4 decks, and they all look the same to me. They aren't poorly done but they're all relative. Just not a fan.

A UC deck with VXD technology would definitely be enticing.

That would make at least two dreamers out there.

My vote (if I had one) would also be for Lorenzo.

As a second, I think I'd like to see Giovanni (Thirdway Industries) come up with something. I know there was a recent discussion regarding "style fatigue" but this could be an opportunity to maybe see something a little different from him. He is also a creator that is active here.

I also like are Montenzi, his NEO: Wave deck has made me a fan and while it is not in my hands yet, I'm excited to get it.

Okay, let's keep this positive and on the top leader board.

I would like to see a best series this year. As I just posted, what David Goldklang is doing as a series is just amazing. An individual deck may not make it in some of the awards, but his series project is worthy of serious consideration for recognition.

Nothing like opening my mouth (or taping on my keyboard) and showing just how new I am around here. I didn't realize Delirium Prism was the 2015 UC deck. Thanks for the info.

That being said... I'm still sticking with my recommendations in my previous post. I'm hard heading I guess.

I'd like to see someone new create the UC 2019 Annual Deck. Don't get me wrong, I think all the previous artists have done a fantastic job, but with the number of great artists out there, I would like to see more new participation before we start seeing too many repeat artists. My dream artist would be Uusi. They had such amazing artistic range and have created some of the best court cards ever in custom playing cards. I really miss them. My super long shot, hell will probably freeze over first, artist would be Jackson Robinson. There's no questioning his talent, and it would be a great opportunity for him to mend some fences here and become part of the community again.

I would love to see Lorenzo and lotrek do one, and Jackson would be great. I was planning on trying to talk to him this year at the convention but it doeant look like I'll make it. Jackson, Paul, and alex have all done 52+joker decka and i think they may be willing to UC decks but they've had a lot of backlash from this forum and fences will need to be mended first.

Side note, im looking for Randy to do the 52+joker deck soon. He's been regular at the conventions for the past 4 years and im sure he'll be there this year.

Re: United Cardists 2019 Annual Deck

The problem with me and my projects is that I cannot respect deadlines.
Speaking of design phase.
When the project hits kickstarter it is 99% done, but if you notice I never publish a release date 6 months before or something like that.

I did Cardlauncher in 2014 in 2 weeks and even if the result was nice, it was not the best. I "fixed" it with no.17 bicycle branded and unbranded in 2015.
I basically did not sleep because i had a deadline.
It is something that definitely I am not going to repeat.

So, if I say now "yes I do it", then I get stressed and I deliver something that I am not happy about, especially if I have to deliver before the end of 2019 I guess XD
That´s why i am reluctant.
I declined many freelance-playingcard-related jobs because of this.
I hope it makes sense :)

I can perfectly understand Lorenzo's position, especially as he has a full time job in addition to card designing. I am sure you have to manage your afterwork time to something that is enjoyable for you.

I am sure Mike will find someone awesome. If no one presents themselves, my dog, Wolf, would like to bring forward some lovely paw prints and sausages design that would certainly get his vote. :)

Lorenzo, I completely understand and respect your position on this. It is commendable that you recognize your limitations around deadlines and choose your projects accordingly!

If you were inclined to design a deck for UC, on your own schedule, I can say without reservation that it would be a success no matter when you released it. Who cares what year it is associated with?
Obviously, you would need to find your own motivation for such a project, as your projects clearly benefit from deep and personal inspiration.
But I think I speak for almost all of us around here when I say we would LOVE to see what you would come up with!
Keep it Sizzlin'!

Don’t want this to sound patronising, but how does anything achieve anything without imposing some form of deadlines on themselves (and others). Sounds like a fairly indulgent way to go about things unless you are saying your card creation is primarily a sideline interest in which case it’s perfectly reasonable

Thedissident001, Lorenzo, like many playing card artists, has a full-time job as a commercial graphic designer. Designing playing cards is something he does in his spare time after-work. In reading his comments in various places, he spends considerable time designing each deck, so it is something that takes considerable time per deck, which is frankly evident in the decks he designs. The House of the Rising Spades he said took a year and a half to design. I don't think it was full-time, but did take that much time given his other work he has to do. So, he can't crank out many decks.

I would love to see a Stockholm17 UC deck of the year, but can also understand and accept that it may not be possible for him to take on such a project.

Well, I was also looking forward to Lorenzo, but now that he's out, who'll be good candidates? Sunish? NIcolai? (Ragnarok was beautiful) Chris Odeyanko? (sorry for the misspelling)

I notice very little mention of Jody Eklund of Black Ink on this forum. If he's up for it, that would be great! Yeah, he has been using the Black Ink design style in almost all his projects, but do recall his very first KS project. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/91 ... ng%20cards" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Those are all good options to me Eric. I really like Jody's work. My only slight issue with him is that his projects have been getting long delays (not the only person, I know). I really like the others mentioned too. Montenzi is another person to consider. He has done several projects, and his last one was just mind blowing. I also think his style could really work nicely as a UC deck. If not this year, he is an artist to put into future consideration.
