Hi! Recently I made this poster and shared it on my FB page. As I see, many people liked it and I want to ask if it will be interesting for the collectors to get a deck in this style. And how do you think - will I have any problems when using the images of well-known actors? Your comments are highly appreciated! Thanks!

I think you would have problems using well known actors. Having one holding a smoking gun might really bother them.

I would love to see your take on a traditional deck of cards.

Or your realistic style with Kings, sexy Queens and Jacks.

I was trying to remember why I married a Russian girl. Yeah, I remember now.

I am not sure how it will turn out for a deck of cards, but it sure would make a nice poster. Not bad for military recruiting either for that matter.

Before supporting this guy take your time to translate the text.

I'll translate it for you... "The only good Russian is a dead Russian". Same meaning as "The only good Jew is a dead Jew."

-to montenzi: if you managed to translate the words on the poster, then you understand it is written in Ukrainian. And you probably know what country has invaded the territory of Ukraine and began war. Therefore, the words about fascism would be better applied to the invaders. I ask you neither write about politics here, nor about your rather primitive understanding of the world processes. This is a topic to discuss the style of the new deck.

Politics? Nooo! The reason I posted - I have zero tolerance for racism and nazism. And I believe UC members should understand what sh%$t you are posting here.

I get that people from Ukraine don't like Russia right now, you have every reason to, they invaded your country and started a war. But those type of ideas basically blaiming the entire Russian people for the war is just wrong and that type of absolute ideas will make a peace building process impossible.

This from someone whose country Russians invaded and stole a big of our eastern part of the country. And when Finns went to take those lands back with the same idea as you have in your poster, all we got was dead young men, even more of our eastern parts lost and the shame of defeat.

As for the idea of the deck, I like it but there is no way you can publish a deck which has famous actors and that types of slogans. You might even get sued for that.

For a while now I've been thinking it would be interesting to do a deck themed after early-20th-century propaganda posters, but as this thread aptly demonstrates it may not be possible to do so without reproducing (if not endorsing) some seriously problematic views. After all, a huge part of the aesthetic appeal of those posters is the powerful graphic design of the slogans, so you have to write something or it, well, isn't a propaganda poster. But it might make the deck feel too silly if you replaced the Orwellian stuff with more innocuous text, say, exhorting you in Russian to BRUSH YOUR TEETH TWICE A DAY FOR VICTORY.

And, yes, ScarJo might well sue if you used her likeness like this.

There's a fine line between homage and exploitation. Sinjin7 can speak more knowledgeably than I about the extent to which you are exposing yourself to legal action (or, at any rate, having your KS campaign shut down) by using likenesses of celebrities in a highly stylized context, insofar as he has studied law from the point of view of a lawyer and I have only looked at IP law where it has intersected my software and writing careers. I suspect you might get away with having a deck of WWII agitprop-stylized images where the likenesses bear strong resemblance to celebrities, maybe, but what is more at issue than whether it's technically legal is whether the celebrities in question actually choose to bother with your campaign. A Cease and Desist letter from a good lawyer will freeze your KS campaign without anybody ever having to sue anybody else.

Toward that end, you may wish to consider: never mentioning the celebrities by name, never putting them in a context that you think they might strongly object to (as per the earlier conversation about racist slogans, or wearing fur, etc.), and generally flying under the radar as harmless flatterer rather than standing out as a cynical exploiter.

What don't you understand? It has nothing to do with politics. Advocating killing people purely because of where they were born or live, is not politics it is just wrong. If you want to go after someone go after the leaders who are responsible instead of being a psycho.
