VXD Vegas Diffractor

Unread post by VXD »

Dear Backers / Members

Firstly I hope this message finds you well and you are having a successful 2018 so far and enjoying some late spring sunshine wherever you may be in the world. The sun is out today in the United Kingdom (shocker, I know) and after I post this message I do intend to go and enjoy it myself.

I am writing today to give our valued previous backers and also members of United Cardists (https://unitedcardists.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) one month’s notice of the launch of our ‘Vegas V2 Diffractor Playing Cards’ deck.

We have been working extremely hard over the last 6-9 months to update and upgrade our brand and our product. As you may notice, we have also had a re-branding. Going forward any playing card deck we produce, whether an original or a collaboration deck, will be known as ‘(Insert Name) Diffractor Playing Cards’. So the ‘VERTEX DECK’ from 2017 will stand alone as our first ever edition with a different and unique name.

We have also changed our brand name to ‘VXD International’, mainly to reflect our long-held plan to release a Diffractor deck for each of the most influential and significant tourist cities in the world. However, we decided that, being our first, the Las Vegas edition needed a V2 edition making so that it would fit into the series to follow (re branding and look), before we move onto London, New York, Paris, Rome, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Monte Carlo etc etc. The list will go on and is not currently in a fixed order – fyi.

So now a little about the Vegas V2 edition, which will launch on June 6th on Kickstarter (time to be confirmed).

You may recall that for the last release, we wanted to be able to deliver our unique patented playing cards in two forms – in our bespoke all-metal cases and also in traditional card ‘tuck’ boxes and that we were not able to deliver the traditional tucks eventually. That is the first thing we are remedying this time, with our ‘Vegas V2 Diffractor Playing Cards’ deck. We understand there are a lot of collectors out there who can’t fit our metal cases into their displays and storage devices easily. The metal cases do feature however, for those that are now fans of them. Another benefit in offering traditional tucks though, is reduction in prices and therefore greater reach to the public in general.

One of our main areas of focus in the last 6-9 months has been in talks with and arrangements with our factories (4 factories in total) in order to reduce overall manufacturing costs. As many have realized and stated in feedback, after they received the ‘VERTEX DECK’ in the post, we have taken every step to ensure the highest quality of our product. For the Vegas DiffractorTM Playing Cards’ deck, we will be delivering the same high level of quality, but at slightly more affordable levels, due to our recent efforts with the factories. I will post a table directly after this message on this thread on United Cardists (########), which shows the upcoming Vegas V2 price levels and the bulk discounts on offer, for the traditional tuck variant.

The whole edition will be a Kickstarter-only and all decks will be limited. More on those limited numbers on launch day. Numbering of traditional tuck units received by backers, will be on a first come, first serve basis, starting from #010.

Since the V1 launched, nearly exactly a year ago, we have been quite active on social media and grown a good following (particularly on instagram) and we have been inundated with questions about the playing cards and requests to buy, from collectors, magicians, cardists and poker players, who had no idea that we had launched or that this type of playing card even existed. So this launch is also for all of those people as well.

We did next to zero marketing prior to or during the last launch (which is a good thing for owners of the VERTEX DECK of course). It was purely a word-of-mouth thing, along with the original single thread put up on United Cardists.

The Kickstarter goal this time will be at $45 000, which is the minimum necessary for us to be able to fund this upcoming project. Those close to us know that we personally funded about 70% of the production costs for the last one, on top of the KS funding received. We are hoping that our marketing efforts over the last few months and the vital support of our existing backers, will get us to that goal this time.

I can’t go into exactly what will be coming as that would detract from the launch day on June 6th but in summary I can say that there will be some elements that remain from the first edition and some elements which we felt could benefit from improvement and upgrade. All will be revealed at the start of the campaign and also as the campaign passes various points.

Take care and enjoy your weekend.

Kind regards

Great news. I hope we can meet the $45,000 goal. I understand the need for the high goal amount, but few Kickstarter playing card campaigns raise that much. Still, I think with some effort you can make it. In the meantime I’ll start a Diffractor jar. I was checking the prices on the last campaign. I had best keep my order under 2 bricks.

yea, it's definitely nice to have such an early heads up to start saving since I'll most certainly have to for this deck lol

Ladies / Gents

Here's a little preview of the upcoming Vegas V2 Diffractor card back artwork.

All silver / grey sunbeams emanating from the four corner stars will have transparent holographic overlays, as will the VXD in the centre and also some of the lights in the two Vegas-sign shaped pieces left and right of the centre chip.

I'm not sure about the "Fabulous". It's not the worst example I've seen, but text on back designs rarely work well.

Apart from that it looks pretty cool. I'm guessing it's quite hard to render how it might look with the holographic overlays?

Yep...One, it is very hard to render holo overlays, and 2, I think text like fabulous is not required as you're stating the obvious. The tech used on cards is fabulous already ;), it will be good if you don't use the text on the backs.

Magik / Guru

Thanks very much for your initial thoughts....and I agree 100%. We were on the fence with the 'Fabulous'. Btw- It is a reference to the 'Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas Nevada' writing from the Vegas sign, as opposed to us saying that our card is fabulous. There are other elements extracted from the sign....such as the stars in the corners, which is the same star shape from the top of the sign (inside the blue metal supports). As well as the lights left and right of the VXD poker / casino chip (in the centre), taken from the yellow outside edges of the sign.

The 54-card brass plate for the new backs will be one of the last things we order ($$$!), when we're 100% happy with the artwork of course, so there is still a little time to amend minor elements. Although it does all need to be locked in by the 6th June launch date for correct KS representation anyway.

Our other considered option on this (as we do like the word and the reference) was to write the 'Fabulous' in fine text as a cut-out / void of transparent holographics within the two sunbeams that join up at an angle at the top and bottom of the card (i.e at the top behind the ink 'Fabulous' seen above). This could be really cool - a more subtle and subliminal use of the word.

Thanks again for the advice guys :)

I forgot to mention it, but I did realize that it was a reference to the sign. A nice touch, which I agree would be better utilized the way you just described :)

Yeah the transparent holographics are quite difficult to render yes, but we will have renderings including the holographics come launch day, as we're working with another designer who is quite experienced in these specific types of special effects. I head to Germany next week to do that and finish up our other tasks before the launch day.

These are gonna look great I think with all the sunbeams having holographic overlays, as well as the VXD and some lines of the Vegas sign lights.....there's far more cover than there was on the 'Vertex Deck' back and it's more uniformly composed. Fans under a bright light with these will be awesome and cardists may really love them, with all the sunbeams shining brightly etc.

We removed the 'Fabulous' and I think that's an improvement. Well judged sir. See what you think.

Cheers

Why do you have a guy singing to a crowd as the picture in the circles? I don't think Vegas for a music concert. Can you do a road as if you're driving down the strip in Vegas instead?

They do actually do some big concerts in Vegas, of course, but considering recent events it might be best not to remind people of that.

I think the problem with showing the Strip is you can't really convey it without depicting landmarks, and you can't depict landmarks without using the likenesses of at least a handful of privately owned casinos. There might not be a legal issue there, but not being a lawyer myself I'd certainly think twice.

Rich

It's not a singer at a concert, rather a DJ mixing at a 'dayclub' in Vegas, which is a huge part of the culture there these days.

We already did nearly exactly what you're talking about with the Vertex Deck (V1) - below for comparison. We wanted to reflect another aspect this time with the Diffractors (V2).

Thanks VXD for the info. I like that V1 picture, not that I could get it in standard or sleeve tuck. :(

As someone who's only been to Vegas once, I have to say I like the V1 picture a lot better than the V2, and I wouldn't mind if you re-used it on the V2 backs. The back design as a whole is different enough that it wouldn't seem lazy IMO.

I have to agree with the comments about the v2 back...though day concerts might be the ‘in thing’ in Vegas at the moment, the image does not invoke any feelings of Vegas and I visit Vegas on a yearly basis :? . Regardless, I will still be backing, but probably for less decks than if I liked the back

I appreciate the feedback, thank you. It all gets logged in the mind.

With regard to the centre artwork, which is what you guys are saying doesn’t resonate so much with each of you, I have to say personally for me it does resonate. While I’m not that young (40 on June 6th actually), I’ve enjoyed a lot of ‘clubbing’ and parties in the last 20 years in many countries and the day-clubs in Las Vegas are something quite unique and certainly a very current and booming element of the Vegas experience. We are certainly aiming younger here with this V2 artwork and there is always an element of risk with whatever artwork you choose to go with.

https://www.reviewjournal.com/entertain ... rty-scene/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://www.queerty.com/las-vegas-daycl ... r-20170614" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://www.reviewjournal.com/business/ ... -dayclubs/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Like a number of other specific designers I can think of (JR, Steve Minty, Lance Miller are good examples), we take on and will continue to take on the additional challenge of reflecting the theme and name of the deck within the artwork, taking time to consider how to piece together key elements which together have a narrative relating to something we all know. This is much more labour intensive during artwork design stage (and more open to critics of course - who all perceive the theme slightly differently) than it is for those designers who always produce abstract and ornate artwork for every card back, regardless of the ‘profound’ deck name they choose for the deck. We want to tell a story with our art, not just produce attractive abstract repetitive patterns.

I also think there’s real scope to widen the appeal and market / marketing for playing cards. In fact I think this is already occurring to a good degree, with celebrity magicians, the poker boom back in the early 2000’s, the relatively new art of cardistry emerging and growing rapidly……and the proliferation of all of these things under the intensely bright spotlight of social media platforms.

Following a lot of design work and direction-consideration, we’re set with this one. Interested to see how it’s perceived by all now…

Regards

That's the thing; the feedback offered is honest, but likewise, the artist has to stay true to his/her vision. Pursuing that vision *informed by* the honest reactions of the buying public is not the same as *subverting* the vision to those reactions.

I, for one, appreciate the fact that you take the feedback seriously, even if, in the end, you decide to choose a different path. If that path resonates, you'll find your audience. And, if it doesn't quite, you'll find... a smaller audience.

:)

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Yes absolutely, we have to 'just' get it seen by a wide audience and advertise it to the right people now....which is far easier said than done of course. Marketing is another beast entirely and is never finished...

I will have no idea whether the marketing will have paid off until a few days into the launch. Fingers crossed it's not been wasted, or these diffractors will never see the light of day (and diffractors can't live without light!) :D

Wait and see (and hope) I guess....

Could not have been stated better. I'd get behind a so-so design (not that this is by any means) from a creator that is open and receptive to feedback any day over a better design from a creator that shuts feedback out completely.

You shouldn't compromise your vision if you feel it's unwarranted to do so, but it's still nice to know you lend an ear to consumers' input :)

That's really good to hear and encourages me more to engage as much as I can. I've always been a totally open book personally and I know no other way for the promotion of this product therefore as well. I probably come across as over-confident sometimes, but that's because I just feel that what we're making has so much potential in the playing cards spaces. You get pushed and pulled by people so much though as well, on forums and on social media etc and it's a job in itself to handle all the criticism (constructive and not) and stay objective and always polite. That's why I try to stick with information and facts only and probably sometimes write what may seem like overly formal posts - maybe that's a shield for me ;)

Speaking of formal / technical info and because this time we are emphasising the invention / patent to a greater degree and marketing the deck as a 'cool gadget' on all the gadget websites and also launching in the 'Design and Tech' category on KS this time - I'll have something hopefully quite interesting to post tomorrow as well, which shows the construction of our cards, on an Infographic. It looks pretty cool I think (being an engineer)....

It looks pretty cool I think (being an engineer)....

Regards
I think you do a really great job in managing the stresses that come with criticism (or at least you give the impression as such lol) and being confident allows you to have the backbone to bear feedback you might not always want to hear. Of course, we all hold creators to a pretty high standard in being adept at tactfully responding to consumers/potential backers with the utmost respect and professionalism, but that is not always an easy feat and there or many, many designers who have proven incapable of doing so otherwise.

Your work is, to a great extent, a reflect of you - so I can totally understand why it would be much easier to shield yourself behind impersonal formality rather than allowing emotions to get the best of you in defending design choices - I would probably do the same if I'm honest :)

Anyways, I'm excited to see what the next update brings - thanks again for sharing the progress of this deck with us :)

Ladies / Gents

Black Diffractor Deck - with transparent holographics (rendered). They are in fact (as people know from our last edition) more brilliant still than this in bright lighting conditions too of course. Far more coverage than on the VERTEX DECK as well. Enjoy!
