Re: Ancient Warriors Playing Cards live on KS
but, like, why a leprechaun on the jokers?? This seems really out of place for this particular theme and the only possible connection I could make as to why a fairy-like(?) creature of Irish folklore (with absolutely zero connection to the other groups) *might* be associated with warriors of ancient civilizations is maybe as a reference alluding to "the fighting Irish" phrase, although, that seems like a slightly offensive stereotype... I'm just trying to make sense of why he's in there cause it's really throwing me off from the overall theme.
Maybe I'm just reading too much into it and the lauperchan has no particular significance whatsoever, but just there randomly; still bothers me though lol.

Re: Ancient Warriors Playing Cards live on KS
I really like many aspects of this deck except for three. I don't like the tucks- I wish the fronts had different designs. And I think the courts have too much white. If there were some type of color or subtle design behind the characters inside those borders I think it would look better. Lastly I don't like the one-way backs. I feel like the design could easily be tweaked to make it two-way. While I think there could and probably should be another character for the joker the leprechaun doesn't bother me that much because it's like an anti-warrior (at the end of the day it is a "joker"). But what does bother me about the jokers is the font color being the same. Jokers should have 2 different font colors.

Seeing the jokers reminded me of this photo I took several years ago...

I dunno, everytime I see a leprechaun, they always seem to be depicted as mischievous and hot-tempered... but that doesn't necessarily equate with being an anti-warrior...vasta41 wrote:While I think there could and probably should be another character for the joker the leprechaun doesn't bother me that much because it's like an anti-warrior (at the end of the day it is a "joker").
And if the designer was going for an anti-warrior character, why not a peacemaker or a passificist, like a hippie or a buddhist - maybe even Confucius himself lol
A leprechaun just seems to make about as much sense to me as including a Genie or a Gnome or basically any other mythical creature of folklore into this deck...
And I'm not sure if being a joker excuses just including whatever - but maybe I'm just being picky.

Exactly my point- it's a joker, not a warrior. The definition of a joker is one who is mischievous and leprechauns are mischievous.PipChick wrote:I dunno, everytime I see a leprechaun, they always seem to be depicted as mischievous and hot-tempered... but that doesn't necessarily equate with being a warrior...
I think you are being picky! I agree that the joker is a little out of place with this theme but I guess it just doesn't bother me as much as you.PipChick wrote:And I'm not sure if being a joker excuses just including whatever - but maybe I'm just being picky.

Yea, I agree he's not a warrior, but that doesn't make him an anti-warrior either... and just because he shares the one defining trait of a joker, doesn't mean he should just be included for that sole reason - that just seems lazy and conventional IMHOvasta41 wrote:Exactly my point- it's a joker, not a warrior. Yea, I guess so - I scrutinize too much over the details trying to find logical continuity between the design of all the cards, the suits, and the theme of the deck as a whole... this joker is the only one throwing me off. Irish it was different, but whatevs lolvasta41 wrote:I think you are being picky! Thanks for checking out the project guys and your insight. As the campaign progresses we may be making minor changes based on backer feedback. Thanks again!

Re: Ancient Warriors Playing Cards live on KS
I'm guessing that those that do not feel that a leprechaun can be viewed as a warrior has probably not read "American Gods" by English author Neil Gaiman. (or seen the series adaptation on Starz). While the image of the leprechaun depicted on the cards in this campaign do not invoke the same image that I have of Mr. Gaiman's work, I guess I'm a rare one that does believe that leprechauns could be warriors.
That and some where in my American mutt genes I have some Irish in me.....

Re: Ancient Warriors Playing Cards live on KS
Even though they're 1-way, I do like the back designs. I really love the number cards. The courts are good. It's weird that they all fit a different theme, but that's unique, and I can dig it. Now, on to the obligatory negative criticism...
The tuck cases are very underwhelming, and yes, the Jokers are bad. I'm on the fence for backing.

Re: Ancient Warriors Playing Cards live on KS
Hey folks; we are funded and I updated the jokers so they have different colors on the index, gold and silver. Also here are a couple additional images I'm adding to the campaign page. We may do a 2nd edition in the future so I will seriously consider any ideas you have for the courts, jokers, tuck, etc. for the next edition if you are a backer of this campaign.
For this edition I'm also looking for ideas on gaff cards, or maybe a 2nd set of jokers? Thanks!
PS - I will be posting some images of a new deck in progress soon and would love some feedback on it.
