Since I'm bored at work, here's the plan for each court card in the series.
I've spent way more than I care to admit on playing cards, but I'll still buy just about anything that Lorenzo, Jackson, or Gio make.

I personally don't like one-way courts. But not enough to keep me from pledging. So long as the decks are less than his current subscriptions.

Re: Lord of Rings - By Kings Wild Project
I may be in the minority, but I would've really preferred the "money" press print style he was going for in earlier stages. Made them feel like artifacts from a bygone era like middle earth itself. These new designs are too busy for my tastes. The execution may be superior, but the approach isn't much different than so many other fantasy themed decks out there.

Re: Lord of Rings - By Kings Wild Project
I do see your point. I hope he makes a deck using that style at some point. Unfortunately, Jackson just wasn't feeling the design. Probably the main reason it took him this long to get started on the project. He ultimately makes what he likes because he personally like it. Personally, I really like this "busy" style. I think a drawback to it though is that certain pieces can look unfinished when they don't have as much detail like Tom Bombadil's clothes.wingedpotato wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 10:56 am I may be in the minority, but I would've really preferred the "money" press print style he was going for in earlier stages. As an additional tidbit, he is also making some LotR designs aimed at children. Whether they will end up as cards or not is yet to be seen I suppose.

Re: Lord of Rings - By Kings Wild Project
Given the pip layout it's clearly an art deck to me and not one that can be used to play most card games. In that case I care a lot less about one-way courts.

I agree. I also like the more cartoon-y style of courts but again, would prefer those ones 2-way.

I think also Jackson was concerned the engraving style he used initially wouldn't have a broad appeal. I think his plan is that this deck will have an overall very broad appeal outside of the playing card collection community. I am fine with the new style and I really like the decision to go with the borders he his using in a sort of similar style to what he used in Alice in Wonderland.

Same here. In my case it's even enough to pass the KS altogether to be honest. Fortunately not a huge fan of LoTR anyway so I have no hard feelings about it.wingedpotato wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 10:56 am I may be in the minority, but I would've really preferred the "money" press print style he was going for in earlier stages. Nice artwork but I like the old approach designwise way more. I guess the old design is off the table, eh?

You mean the one that had Frodo holding up and peering through the ring? I loved those; these are too generic for me.Harvonsgard wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 5:17 am Nice artwork but I like the old approach designwise way more. I guess the old design is off the table, eh?

I agree. I dont dislike these, but the first take was looking to be something special.Timmargh wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 11:45 amYou mean the one that had Frodo holding up and peering through the ring? I also agree. I was very excited about the first ones not so much on these.

Re: Lord of Rings - By Kings Wild Project
They all look awesome to me! I really hope he does an edition of the old design, but I like the new one too, maybe not quite as much. The kids one looks great too, pretty original style for a deck. To me anyway.

Let's see how big this gets and if there's enough demand from the collectors to get him to do a player's edition with the original design.

Re: Lord of Rings - By Kings Wild Project
The initial plan is to start with three decks, a standard, limited and gilded version. There definitely will be a standard deck. I assume that is what you mean by a players deck.

Re: Lord of Rings - By Kings Wild Project
Sorry, should have been clearer. Player's ed here means the 2 way courts rather than 1 way art. Hoping that his original 2 way designs don't go into the junk folder but he sees enough in them to release them.

Re: Lord of Rings - By Kings Wild Project
Unless he changes the pip positions I cannot see how it would be a players deck, unless it's solitare. Just not possible to hold the cards and see the indicies properly in my view. Doesn't mean it's not a good deck, just not one I would be able to play cards (e.g. Poker, Spades, Hearts) with.

Re: Lord of Rings - By Kings Wild Project
Thanks to the question of EvilDuncan on Discord, Jackson revealed that he might do a hybrid deck combining the two styles.
Rationale for not doing the original style was that it wouldn't look good printed at the size of a deck of cards.

Gaudy? Personally I thought the borders were the best part, especially for an art deck.

Hybrids mostly are turd, this is no exception. I'm in the first draft style camp but would prefer the new version over the hybrid all day long.

yeah, that is pretty much where it started for me. i have no doubts it will be a hit.Harvonsgard wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 3:34 am I'll put this project to me wish it well but not for me pile.
i like the second court better without the border but then he removed the color from the court. i get it if these are both being offered. they would be too similar otherwise.

No, there are two different versions of the cards. One with full color and another that is closer to his original designs with gold embellishments and more of the engraving style.

Re: Lord of Rings - By Kings Wild Project
oh wow... just catching up with this thread, disappointed the original style was left behind. The art is undoubtedly beautiful and will make for a satisfactory homage to the series, but I'm with blues and harv: not for me.
