Thank you for sharing these here, and I'm very glad you like how the proofs are coming along!
Harvonsgard wrote:Wow... that is what I call a shiny tuck. :D With that tuck box I'll definetly would put it in the deck of the year category aswell.
It is a rather shiny tuck isn't it ;) I'm really pleased with how it's coming and I love how the use of gold foil from light to shadow helps hide the patterning even more - the purpose of my William Morris inspired original hand-drawn 'forest' design for the tuck was a commentary on how we (humans) are intertwined and inescapably part of nature and therefore should respect it, but also how we don't and so animals/nature have to hide from us. The foil also means that it constantly appears different (in different light), another common theme with this whole deck design - to constantly be discovering hidden design elements. But I admit, when I first opened it, the same thought went through my mind...wow...that is what I call a shiny tuck. :D

I appreciate all feedback and understand not every design is for everyone, but I'm glad you like how the tuck is developing!

Man... I really want to nominate this deck for Tuck of the Year... (from update)

Image

But if the deck doesn't fulfill before the end of this year, would it still be eligible to be entered?

Big update with a lot of detail and transparency!
I was contacted last week by Expert Playing Card Company as the products were at the Hong Kong port, ready to ship to Japan. The handler at the port noticed that the professional gilder had actually made a mistake and applied a silver gilding instead of a gold gilding.

...

While the tucks would be switched out and still used in the final products, the mis-gilded cards would be disposed of, which simply did not sit with my goals of creating a sustainable business and running a project that helps the planet.

...

I have negotiated with EPCC tirelessly over the last half a week. In conclusion, they have agreed to give me the misprinted decks, with tucks, at discount. Therefore, this project is officially over budget as I have spent about $4000 of my own money (please see the financial details below). But what this means is that I will NOT be wasting materials, and I will have extra products to sell to hopefully make my investment back and then continue with my creative work and raising money to help abandoned animals in Japan with ARK.

What this means for you. I want to show you that I am considering every element of my campaign and will continue to in all campaigns and projects to come. So, partly as an apology for the slight shift in timeline as well as more a recognition that we are on this journey together, to grow, I will give all backers for decks a free deck of the Cultuarae Animalis 'misprinted edition' cards.

But I was not satisfied with simply having limited edition misprints

I have negotiated to give the 'misprinted' decks, a whole new feeling. Allow me to introduce the Culturae Animalis 'misprinted edition'. The tuck boxes will be printed with a silver foil (instead of gold) to match the gilding, and I have also changed the seal from black to a lighter grey. The one point I cannot change is that the original card printing with my back designs had hand-drawn yellow/gold line-work, but otherwise, the whole deck will still feel comprehensive and entirely fresh. I am not comfortable releasing anything that feels unfinished, but these new decks both with their new comprehensive design, keeping all original art work, and now interesting backstory, will become beautiful stand-alone decks. (photos to be posted when they
arrive).

...

Another good message I've kept under-wraps until now. The gold decks may have second-edition iterations down the line, but this print run (not stated before) WILL BE a limited edition run of only 1000 units, and the seals will be numbered. What's more, the silver decks will most certainly not be re-printed, and also will have limited edition, numbered seals.

...

I also believe in transparency - it helps the backers understand what decisions I have made through the project, what work I have put in and how this project makes a difference (not forgetting all the good it has already achieved). I may try to put something more comprehensive together later, but here are some basic figures, all approximated.

Total funding on kickstarter: ¥1,630,000
Total received after dropping the backers with incorrect or insufficient account information, and minus Kickstarter and bank transfer fees: ¥1,420,000
Cost for printing, packaging and shipping to me: ¥1,200,000
Estimated cost of shipping from me to backers: ¥280,000
Profit/loss: -¥60,000
NOW, cost for printing Culturae Animalis 'misprinted edition': ¥400,000

Final profit/loss: -¥460,000
Final product I keep: Approximately 400 original decks and now 600 misprinted editions remaining.

Sale price following campaign:
Culture Animalis: ¥3000/$30 + shipping
Culturae Animalis 'misprinted edition': ¥2000/$20 + shipping

Profit before taxes if all decks sell: ¥2,000,000

Enough to help me begin funding my next project, take my wife to dinner, and to rescue, foster and permanently rehouse some of the abandoned cats and dogs of Japan. Efforts like this could help spray/neuter and provide vaccines for 10 animals, or sponsor an animal to provide everything including food, medicine, housing and care giving for a year. All efforts also help reduce the number of abandoned animals through educational programmes and other activities (I will try to keep you informed of the difference this campaign makes later on).

The transparency is very cool and Jack has been extremely professional throughout the process. I think he handled this setback really well and created a really elegant solution in the process. I don't mind the delay because his communication has been flawless and he has shared some sneak peeks at the tuck box already. This will be a mind-blowing deck and certainly worthy of DotY nomination, based solely on the images shared.

I regret not backing this campaign, but will be looking to get a few decks from his website when they come out. Definitely appreciate the transparency in costs, it's cool to know profits are going to a good cause.

Thank you for the feedback. As I've said many times, I believe in running an ethical and open business, and in the value of building my work and community in the long run over short gains. I'm glad my design work and approach to the campaign is well-received and any support, whether in backing; spreading the word; or recognition, helps me continue such work and help the causes it supports more along the way. So, thank you. If you ever have any questions feel free to get in touch!

Thank you for the kind comment. Feel free to get in touch anytime regarding questions or support for this deck and its project. The update also revealed that though future iterations may be coming (unplanned as of yet and I am already brainstorming an entirely new deck design) this is a limited edition run of 1000, sealed and numbered decks. Now also with a limited edition run of 1000 sealed and numbered silver 'Misgilded Edition' decks that will never be revamped in any format (all information given in updates). About 600 of 1000 gold decks are sold, and 350 or 1000 silver through the Kickstarter campaign and direct pre-orders. I say this simply to let you know the situation and offer to help however I can. I appreciate that not all deck designs are for everyone. But, you can contact me through my website or instagram, and I will do what I can to help however you wish.

Sorry I've been away - I've been keeping in touch with the Kickstarter community but didn't have time to come to UC - New Year is a big thing in Japan. I am about to put information up on my website shop now. The process should be fine but I need to give my website an overhaul also. People can always contact me directly through the contact page on the website, instagram or direct email.

That's wonderful - of course I made extra efforts to solidify the design of the 'Misgilded Edition' (the name I have finally settled on for the silver deck - embrace the facts). They are officially on the market (about 400 gold decks and 600 silver decks remaining). I will put them up on my website shop soon, but anyone can contact me directly by email, on instagram, or on my website contact page. Thank you again for your support and continued participation in this project!

Thank you for taking the time to look so carefully. Every single card took about 15 hours to design, from concept to the little detail rendering - all by hand. You will also continue to find hidden gems that are only noticeable when cards are placed together, or symbolic links and clues within cards relating them to their numbers, their suit, and their lore. This is all why the design of the deck took 6 months before the Kickstarter campaign even launched. My hope with this project, as with all my work to my nonsense writing, is that new details and depth is continually found. Some details are evident enough to draw you in, while others need to be searched for and discovered.

Thank you again for your support, and I hope you enjoy them!

Thank you for helping share this. Thankfully, with some pressure on EPCC and DHL, and with packing over Christmas eve and Christmas day for shipping on boxing day - the whole campaign was fulfilled in 2019.

To anyone who is more knowledgable about UC mechanics - I intended to open a 'company's official thread' page, so that each project may continue independently to communicate with members directly about, but so that there was also a general channel to always get in touch and discuss anything that may come up with my works and playing card projects. The channel appears greyed however, and doesn't allow for a new thread to be opened. Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated. Thank you.

Received both deck today and all I can say is just WOW!

These is in my top 3 decks of last year. And I wasn't expecting to say anything like that during the KS campaign. The renders didn't even HINT at what the final result would look like, especially the tuck case. You can see by other comments, that people who have now seen them in person want more. I'm sorry I didn't get more then, but will definitely get them when they become available.

Looking forward to your next project Jack.

Thank you very much for the kind words, I'm delighted that you like them and even that you do so with some element of surprise ;) The theme of most of my work is to incorporate various 'reveals' from the hidden and intricate details - and what better a reveal than the expectation of a good product turning out to be one of one's favourite. Thank you again for all your support and feel free to get in touch with me directly as the cards are now available for purchase retail, if you wish. My website has a contact page, or simply my official email is jackbrutuspenny@hotmail.com.

Looking forward to bringing you my next project also. It'll be some way down the line as I always intend to put the same energies into all projects, but rest assured I have listened to feedback and already formed my ideas, with a splice of the evolution of the creative process seen here. They will be entirely different, yet go well as a paired set.

Dear All,

With results of the 2019 DOTY awards coming soon, I'm anxious. But either way, I just want to say thank you to everyone for your support through this process. This was a year of passion and careful attention in the making and I enjoyed the journey with you.

I'd also like to invite anyone interested to follow along with the creative process of my next project. I will, as with Culturae Animalis, throw a lot of dedication into it and so do not expect to be ready to print for a long time yet, but I am already making sketches, evolving my work, and involving the UC community in some of the creative decisions along the way. Check it out in the New Decks section under Jack Brutus Penny - 2020.

Btw, I suspect a lot of people don't know that there's actually two editions of this deck: the normal gold-gilded edition and the misgilded silver edition: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ja ... ts/2716699

Jack's good gesture of not wasting the misgilded silver edition and printing a silver tuck for it has made this project even more interesting: so basically the Gold and the Silver come together as a set! Don't know how many people know about this, but I certainly only did today while taking some photo shoots of the misprinted silver deck. Didn't realize until halfway through that it was the silver all along :P

Anyways, he said that this will be up on his online store soon. Originally he had an extra debt of $4000 for the reprint but is now reduced to $2000 due to after market sales. Hopefully, the gap would be filled in closer when sales go up on his site ;) That's one responsible man and project creator here!
