ecNate - I guess you can assume the first Joker is the Major and the one on the right is the minor with no "Joker" Even bending the rules even back then...

SO. MANY. AWESOME. DECKS. Man, I can't keep up!

My daughter is getting married in three weeks and there's so much to do that I've only got time to take a couple of quick cell-phone pics...

So, here are a couple of vintage decks: The Olifant Deck and Lirola deck. I thought the Lirola was interesting because B.P. Grimaud held a contest in 1973 and Genevieve Lirola won with this design. It's sooo 70's! :D

Ahh. So that's where the lovely Lirola deck went. I had it for months on my watch list but never pulled the trigger. Really happy it made its way into good hands. :)

Nate, you're killing it with those decks!

Ha! Funny thing is, I wasn't looking for it. I bought a vintage deck awhile back that was in great condition but, it was missing the joker. Knowing how many people post Swap cards on ebay I kept an eye out for one. Lo and behold, one showed up! When I looked through the seller's other items I found these decks. Since he was in Canada we worked out a package deal to save on shipping for all of them. :)

There is a forum that I have frequented regularly since 2001. Although it is not specifically related to playing cards, I have posted there many times (in a General "sub-forum") about my collection, including images of many cards from it. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Over the years, there have been several times when other members of that forum would PM (Private Message) me, asking if I would like some unusual deck of cards they had. I would always say "Yes, please!" and give them my mailing address. As a result, I have received perhaps fifteen or twenty decks over the years from members of that forum.

I received one such Private Message there a week or two ago, and on Mondayoh lat week, here is what came in the mail as a result:
==========[ TimBurtons ]==========
http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u570/RSLancastr/TimBurtons_zpsdb1f2bf7.jpg
s/
s
This deck's courts (which repeat, unfortunately) sport single-ended images of morbid creatures from the imagination of Tim Burton, whose film "The Nightmare Before Christmas" has inspired at least three or four other decks, with characters from that film on their courts.

As far as I know, the creatures on this deck's courts are not from a film, but are very much in the same vein as the characters in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" were (before Christmas, that is).

A fun and creepy deck, perfect for Halloween time!
==========[ BettiePage_DarkHorse ]==========
http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u570/RSLancastr/BettiePage_DarkHorse_zps355eb9e2.jpg

Every card in this deck shows a photo of the iconic 1950s/1960s "photography model" Bettie Page, with a color background added (a different background color for each suit).

For those not familiar with Bettie, here's the Wikipedia page abut her:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bettie_Page

The images used in this deck are pretty tame by today's standards, and I was glad to see that none of her "darker" photos (such as those of bondage scenes) were used here,

A great deck for any Bettie Page fan, or for someone who collects "pin-up" decks.

[
==========[ StarTrekTOS_SpecialEdition_Deck1 ]==========
http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u570/RSLancastr/StarTrekTOS_SpecialEdition_Deck1_zpsf0d56300.jpg

There have been more than twenty different decks of playing cards based on the Star Trek franchise of TV shows and films ( see this web site for images of a lot of them: http://www.jklm.net/atn/star-trek-playing-cards.htm), and I have many in my collection, but I had never seen the tin that this deck (and the next one) came in, nor had I ever seen this deck.

The deck's pips are those sorta-boomerang-shaped emblems seen on the breast of the uniforms of the Enterprise crew. Each suit's pips are a different color for each suit, making this a "No-Revoke" deck. Each suit's pips also have a different symbol within its pips, representing a different area of responsibility within the crew (Engineering, for example).

Overall, this deck is very different than most Trek decks, which usually have standard pips and photos of the crew on the courts.

Speaking of which...
==========[ StarTrekTOS_SpecialEdition_Deck2 ]==========
http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u570/RSLancastr/StarTrekTOS_SpecialEdition_Deck2_zps794ff4ac.jpg

This deck (and perhaps the previous one) was originally sold individually and in a tuck, rather rather than bundled with another deck in a tin, as they were here.

Its courts, aces and jokers have photos of various characters from the show:
  • The Aces are photos of Captain Kirk (William Shatner),
  • The Kings are photos of Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy),
  • The Queens are photos of female crewmembers, such as Lieutenant Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) and Nurse Chapel.
  • The Jacks are photos of male crewmembers,, such as Chekov (Walter Koenig), Sulu and Dr. "Bones" McCoy.
  • The Jokers are photos of humorous guest-starring characters.
Another fun deck for fans of Star Trek!
==========[ GameOfThrones ]==========
http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u570/RSLancastr/GameOfThrones_zps7302e7c8.jpg
I have yet to see even a single episode of HBO's "Game of Thrones", so I know next to nothing of the characters in the show, nor of the actors who portray them - photos of which appear on the deck's courts, aces and jokers - but I have a hunch that the characters depicted on the courts of each suit are from a different family/clan on the show. I just don't know.
==========[ DCComics_Super-VillainsPokerSet ]==========
http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u570/RSLancastr/DCComics_Super-VillainsPokerSet_zpscaf79cf1.jpg
Back to the story of the package I received:

The user had told me that he was sending me "a few decks", so I was quite surprised at both the size and weight of the package. It was about two feet long, ten inches deep, and six inches tall, and weighed enough to have held fifty or sixty decks (the postage on it was more than $34.00, and it was mailed from here in the US!).

Had my Benefactor sent me a few bricks of decks rather than "a few"? Intrigued and excited, I carried the package from our front door to our dining table (no man feat, from my wheelchair, using only my one good hand) and set about opening it up (no mean feat either is it had been sealed with what seemed to bean acre of tape.

When I got it open, I could see the above five decks, nestled atop a sea of packing malerials. With them was a note which read "Don't stop! There's more underneath!"

I reahed down through the packing materials and pulled out a box which was nearly as long and as wide as the package itself, and which accounted for almost the entire weight of the package!

The box contained a DC Comics Super-Villains Poler set, like this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-DC-CO ... 23416dce86

...which included two copies of the deck shown above this quote.
And that's the story of my "Benefactor" and the decks which he sent to me.

Here are three which I recently purchased on eBay:

Very nice!!

I have been a huge Star Trek fan since it originally aired in the 60's and yet, sad to say, I don't have any Star Trek decks. I think I NEED that first one.

Excuse me while I go search ebay...

Edit* Geez, there are a lot of different Star Trek decks!

There sure are!

My favorite is this one:

Here's what I said about the deck in 1997 on my old web site. "Tge Bob Lancaster Gallery of Unusual Playing Cards":
The Deck

Star Trek! Though the original series was short-lived, few television series have had such an impact on modern culture.

Although it has spawned (so far) an animated series, three additional live-action series, nine movies and countless books, magazines, web sites, games and more, it is still the original series (or "TOS", as fans refer to it) which has had the widest influence.

Even those people who do not consider themselves fans know much from the show: phrases such as "Live Long and Prosper", "beam me up, Scotty", "highly illogical" and "the Prime Directive" have made their way into the lexicon, and a person would have to have lived in a cave for more than thirty years to not recognize images such as Mr. Spock's splay-fingered hand gesture and the distinctive shape of the USS Enterprise.

It's not surprising that no less than ten different decks of playing cards have been created based on the various series' images. The one shown here in the gallery is arguably the best of the lot.

With distinctive, futuristic suit-signs, aces depicting ships from the various alien races, and characters from the series faithfully reproduced in beautiful color on double-ended court cards, the deck is quite handsome.

Produced by CIC Video in Australia in 1996 (and again in Germany in 1998), the deck was originally distributed as a promotional item in conjunction with the release of videos of the original series.

I have read both that:
  • Individual videos contained certain cards, and only by purchasing all videos were you able to complete the deck, and
  • A boxed set containing the entire series of videos also came with a complete deck.

Either way, there don't seem to be a lot of the complete decks floating around.
I bought my copy on eBay in 1997, and don't recall ever seeing it listed there since then.

Good Luck, DragonSoul!

I have seen them here at the 52+Joker convention, but I didn't ask Jackson if they were for sale. The ones I ordered have not come yet, and I assume that he just got them - as in maybe shipping at this point, maybe not yet. I will ask when I see him and report back tonight. As I recall, it was a single brick, but of course there may well be more, I would assume.

Patience is a virtue. The last to arrive, I have to assume, but yesterday I got a call from the post office that a registered package from the Hellenic Post had arrived. I dutifully made the 9-10am window this morning and here's my reward:

My loot from the 52+ convention. Jackson had at least 1 brick of Tally Ho decks, but by the time I got to him he was sold out. I promised I would not post the prices I payed, but apparently you can get some good deals on the third trading day. Some ppl just don't want to haul a bunch of cards back home with them. I was really checking out a couple of old decks, but could not pull the trigger. I really didn't know the value of the decks and how to spot the condition, but I would love to have a vintage center piece. Maybe next year...

I was really staring hard at this one #46. AD Illuminated 185 - 8oD has stain - 52 complete (Excellent +)

I heard in conversations these can go for $1000- $1200. I guess if it's mint.

Additions the past week or so (also picked up Foto Grafis & Requiem Autumn, not represented here):

Image

I'll post in the related thread about the Kings Wild Halloween contents, but I was pleased. Finally have a LOT more than just my prior 2 decks.

The next 3 are just custom card games, but the artwork on them was pretty neat. The Pairs game was a KS project that made over $330k and had 11 versions of the same game, plus the Falling deck. The cards were printed by Carta Mundi and given the similarity to playing cards I included here.

No need to explain Tally-Ho, but more on the Ben Yates deck in a bit.

SUPER excited to finally get the N17 deck as a prize from Sparkz via Facebook! :ugdance:

The Ben Yates 'Deck of Playing Cards' (couldn't come up with a better name apparently?) is a photography art deck done in a semi-transformation style I guess? This also goes really well with the Foto Grafis that I picked up recently and didn't get in photo. Usually I can't stand photography decks, but these 2 avoided the typical 'hey look, I put my photos on playing cards' garbage. Kinda makes me want to design a deck all of a sudden. ;)

I'll just say that there are definite benefits to going to the 52+Jokers convention, and also benefits to rooming with Mr. Robinson. You would probably hate me if I posted everything that I came home with. :)

Oh, go ahead!

If your haul is anything like what I used to bring back from 52+J conventions, posting images of it here will absolutely guarantee that UC will be even more well-represented at the 2015 conference!!

ETA: jUST WANTED TO TELL EVERYONE HERE THAT... That my CapsLock is on, sorry.

No, I wanted to tell everyone here that my computer is in the shop (for a week or so) with a failed hard drive. Here's hoping that the backups I made of the thousands of scans of cards from my collection (which I use to create my "grids", among other things) are intact.

I'm posting this from my wife's computer, and she just informed me that she is going through withdrawals - She hasn't played her Facebook games in more than five hours, poor thing!

I'll post when I can (I just received three uncut sheets which I am anxious to show you).

Been a while. Got some goodies today. I got the print at Comic-Con, figured it's sorta related.
