I agree, I still think it's too high. Think about it... A Sherlock "standard" deck with all the bells and whistles was $12 in KS including shipping... This one is $19 including shipping.

Sinjin's right - I didn't word that well: I meant to say "$16 is not unreasonable, but $19 is too high still". $16 isn't out of the ballpark, but it's still high.

What the #@&% have we come to where $19 a deck is not unreasonable for a deck of this caliber with these specs???
There are decks worth 19 bucks, but this ain't one of them. Black and white for that price? A shame it's so high, I like the art but not at that price.

Your courts have borders. Which is fine most courts have borders, but your indexes are a bit small and they don't line up with your pips. All the indexes need to be in the same zone or area...

Hey everyone,

I'm Chris, one of the designers behind the Flesh & Bones deck.
I'm really happy to answer any questions you guys have.

This is our debut deck of cards and the design process was a steep learning curve for us. Any advice, compliments or criticism you guys have is all welcome

Look forward to it

Welcome to UC, Chris! We're always happy to help, and I backed your deck. I still wish they could get the cost to a reasonable number, $15/$16 is still too high in our minds (and $19 is MUCH too high for one deck!).

...and I added you to our "Deck Artist" group as well, Chris. Sher, I thought you could do that - no? (PM me if you can't) Anyway, that way you should up with a "Deck Artist" badge by your name and that title as well, and people can easily tell when any artists or designers are online because they show up in the "Who's Online" list in bright white or yellow unlike most normal users.

I pledged for a deck, even at the $16 price including shipping, which I think is high, because we're all used to getting them for $10-$12 including shipping.

It's kind of strange: when I tried to back the deck at the Early Bird price ($12) is wouldn't let me. I tried that 3 or 4 times even after I gave it my charge information and thought I was done. I tried one time to do it at the regular price ($15) and I didn't think that worked, either, but now I show up with both. I have already (just now) sent a message using the "Contact us" form to see if they can straighten it out for me, I only want one deck. I can't see any way to easily cancel (or change, for that matter) a pledge.

Unfortunately, I don't have nothing to do with this and am not sure why that would be the case. The system is obviously still really new and has some kinks that need to be ironed out for sure. As for the prices, it is the Buck twins' team that handles them. The price was originally higher but they dropped it down to align more with other decks out there.

For us, when weighing up our options whether to use Kickstarter or Deckstarter, it was the fact that Deckstarter handles all of the printing, packaging and distribution that swayed it. As we are based in the UK, if we had gone with Kickstarter, we would have had to have had all the decks shipped over here, to then redistribute them back out over the world which would have shot up delivery costs. That was pretty much the deciding factor for us.

Wouldn't any of the Bucks pledging money for this be just a bit of a conflict of interest? I do agree that this site has serious flaws with not allowing one to cancel or change pledges, very amateurish imo. You would think the Bucks would have a professional kickass site, not something on wordpress.

And someone tells me it in fact is:

It is against the ethics of the North American CrowdFunding Society to contribute to any project for which you have a financial interest.

With one day to go... the pledge that funds the deck... that's convenient.

So does this mean all Deckstarter campaigns will fund - regardless?

I wish they aren't with d&d because that's the root problem with the deck. The pricing, marketing etc, that is the really problem.

Yes, I think it does. So far they have dumped about $15,000 between "Dan Buck", "Dave Buck", "Justin Buck" and "Art of Play Buck" into the projects, and I didn't add up what went into this one, but since it was less than half funded with 4 days left I'm betting I find either the same thing or a whole lot of anonymous pledges in the past two days.

I ran a proposal by them, but they're not ready to admit defeat. I guess once they pump another $10-$20,000 into it they'll be done, though. Let's see what they dig up for next month. This one was tolerable - heck, I ordered one at the $12+4 shipping. That's still pretty darned expensive since being as what I do I know you can deliver a single deck for $11 or $12 including shipping. We'll see, and once I get things rocking with the first four campaigns on CardLauncher I figure they'll be ready to throw in the towel, but maybe not. The twins are somewhat foolish in this endeavor, but brother Justin seems to make a lot more sense (he runs Art of Play in San Diego, whilst the twiinz reside in Los Angeles).

I guess - I didn't bother, Dave. When someone pledges over $4000 in the last two days, things are going to get funded, and that $1457 number made precisely $10,050. The $2500 from Art of Play sure didn't hurt. That's more than 40% of the total, though, so we're now up over $15,000 in funding that you can tell was by the people that own the place, or at least looks suspicious enough to say it's there's. Nobody makes their pledge "Anonymous" when it's almost $1500 unless they know people are watching.

Since I'm on the "Rules and Regulations" committee of the National CrowdFunding Association I'll just say it's both unethical and likely illegal, because they have made three straight project APPEAR to be successful when in fact each fell flat on its face, because if they hadn't pumped $4-$6000 into each of them (Draplin [sp?] did OK, but not enough, but Milner wasn't even close - maybe 40% without them buying the success. That's just being deceitful when you get right down to it (I'm sure I'll get a message from our legal Counsel about this one!)...

Curiously enough, if you go over there right now, there's nothing for sale at all. That's not going to help much. I wonder if everybody else has already bailed?

@biron - Why come you didn't change the indices? The court indices don't line up with the pip indices thus making this a nonfunctional deck. This deck could have been so much better. Oh well, It looks like you have a crutch anyways. By the way, if your playing with your cards and if your opponent has some cards more spread out than the other cards if your facing them just know those are court cards. Hint, hint Sorry, in the original post I meant to say your suit indices are to small. You need to distinguish the court card at a distance when it's on the table.

I rather like the small indices with an illustrated deck like this, but I have to agree with you sprouts that they should all line up. That's a major reason the index was created on cards - for easy and stealthy viewing of your own cards.

Since these cards have already been printed we will mail them out within the week. We'll send you an additional confirmation when they ship!
Which is funny because on their last coffee they said that they hadn't been printed

Not sure if this was noted, but it's very unethical. Edit - I see it was noted. I also noticed the creator mentioned that the bucks controlled the prices, so there you go.

There was 1 $2500 pledge which appears to have been specifically put there for Artofplay to back and make sure the deck was successful. On top of that whoever pledged for it gets their company advertised in the deck. Creating a tier specifically to make sure a project is successful and to make sure you can promote your other websites is BS. I'm done with Deckstarter and their crap!

Re: Flesh and Bones Playing Cards (Deckstarter)

Unread post by biron »

Hi guys,

Sorry I haven't posted on here sooner. Have been away lots.

To answer questions:

The indices have actually been fixed. They are all in the same place now so no more worries about fanning the deck ;)
This was our first ever deck of cards so have been learning lots over the process.

The cards haven't already been printed. If an email was sent out saying that, the information on it was incorrect. The decks are being printed right now at the USPCC.

As I said before, unfortunately we don't get to handle anything like support, purchasing, managing your pledge, shipping or anything Deckstarter related. We literally provide the artwork and then they take it from there. I'm sorry if any of you are having trouble with the platform :(

Anyway, thanks for everyones support. When the deck is out, we will be stocking it ourselves and will be selling it on our personal website (dualoriginals.com). If you order a deck form there, we will be handling everything ourselves.

Cheers,

Chris and Marylou

@biron - Thats wonderful news. That makes your deck a whole lot better. I would say in your next deck have a white border around your indices in your dark areas. I noticed you like to be dark in the bottom right of your cards. Wish we had time to talk about your back of card. Is that you in the first pic holding the the deck? You're kind of cute. Do you have a sister?

@sprouts115 - thanks glad to hear it. We'll let you know when the cards are available. Unfortunately no, that's not me, it's Marylou, she is the one who illustrated the whole deck
