If it ever comes back online, some tech savvy people need to download it in some sort of database format. I'd happily download and store the entire archive somewhere. The 5mb picture limitations make me think it wouldn't be too huge of a download, with a lot of it being text data. By not too huge, I mean it could be in the realm of storeable for an average joe.
Part of it is sparked by me wanting to get a NAS. There's a Ugreen NASync coming out on Kickstarter in March. It's a risk to trust a new NAS with proprietary OS, but for a newb like me, it seems like a good solution for a beginner. I am not techy, but I can self-teach and tend to be the one my family goes to for tech related stuff, so I've got that going for me
I have lots of thoughts about this
IMO the site to emulate would be MusicBrainz -- the entire database is open, free, and downloadable. Also, importantly, it's separate from the images, which are technically copyrighted. MB solves this with a site called AlbumArtArchive, which is a joint project with the Internet Archive.
Also, I absolutely wouldn't get a weird proprietary KS product as a NAS -- there are tons of free software options out there

Yeah, as cool as the marketing sounds, I'm leaning more towards Synology as I do my research. Being a guinea pig for data storage reliability doesn't sound all too palatable for a newbie like me.

Funny story I have about 80%(20,000) of the decks with front img, back img, and most of the other data for a single deck view in a db right now. I dont want to do anything until more people agree it is not coming back.....

That is great news. As you mentioned on that other thread It would be extremely difficult to recapture all that data from scratch.
We are living through a new Golden Age of playing card design, production and collecting. The data has archival value which is more important than Alex and us.

Here is the break down of the data I have.
Decks after removing the ones that were not reachable probably deleted or duplicates that were deleted after adding to portfolio52. I did this at the very end of 2022 so anything added since then I dont have.
The site the day I got the data said there were about 20,063 decks before removing the deleted decks that are still in the count.
I have 18,476 so 1587 of those decks that are listed in the count you cant actually reach their single deck page. I checked the way back machine and the site at the start of February 2024 says 24,956. I assume that is with decks that have been removed from the DB but I might be wrong.
DB
is like
72.0 MB
Photos
3.5 gigs
Decks
18476
The following I am not sure if they had them and it moved because of length or they just did not have that info. Here are the amounts of each field and the percent of decks that have I have that info for.
About: 10,681 (57.81%)
Printer: 15,918 (86.16%)
Artist: 7081 (38.33%)
Collection: 15,886 (85.98%)
Release Year: 12,175 (65.90%)
Production: 3900 (21.60%)
Stock: 3752 (20.31%)
Finish: 4919 (26.62%)
Court Illustration: 9895 (53.56%)
Company: 15,654 (84.73%)
Style: 3876 (20.98%)
Front and back are the only ones that I tried to get
Images: 36,309
Right now I am making a site in angular but it is very early days.

I may have additional images as I had downloaded some locally because it was a pain scrolling down profiles on google chrome. I'm sure there's plenty since 2022 that I have.
They appear to be sized in kilobytes with a resolution of 500x700. Taken from 2 user profiles. 11,809 files - 1.23GB, so about 5,900 decks.
Anyone can download if they'd like:

I have ~730 front of the same size as kevork's, although it's unlikely that I have any that they don't.

If it has actually been closed down then I’m pretty angry about it. I can tolerate waiting for cards, ie. Blind Tiger, but closing down such a valuable and used resource without at least mentioning it or offering someone to take it over is pretty s**t, in my opinion.

"This isnt publically available. Never will be. This is my personal replacement. If anything, Its more of a proof of concept for a publically available one. $15 is what I pay for the Spaces Bucket in case anyone wants to build their own off this model."
He's willing to share the files so people can setup their own personal database when he's done though.

Again, the images are the problematic part of this, copyright-wise -- assuming the site would be US-based, all other data on decks would be copyright-free (see
Feist Publications, Inc., v. Rural Telephone Service Co.)
This should also mean we would be able to use books, magazines, etc. to find information about decks without worrying about copying that data

Yea was such an important resource to the whole community. Was saying on reddit that if it was just a matter of time or money people would have rallied to help, but it just being full gone without a word leaves quite a void.
Like you can tell how important it was people on all different platforms keep trying to find out what happened, got people like me coming back here after forever specifically to just see if I can get any kind of extra info

I am just waiting till more people agree that it is not coming back. If the person in the thread that says they might get a reply soon comes back with no then I will post on the facebook groups to get some people to start coding something. It will take time though. I am working on it by myself right now in my free time.

I just discovered Portfolio52 has vanished and thought I'd mention that I've been working on building comparable functionality into the World of Playing Cards.
The "Your Collection" feature (
https://www.wopc.co.uk/your-collection) works in a similar way; you can add decks that are already on the site, or submit something that's missing. Then you can manage your collection, organise into different lists, add notes, etc.
It's not an exact clone of Portfolio52, but I found it achieves the same goal.
If anyone finds it useful, and has ideas for improvements then I'm interested to hear from you... especially now Portfolio52 seems to have gone...

Bloody hell, your site is
immense, but I can't create an account – I fill out the form and click 'Submit' and the page seems to reload and … nothing; no error message.

I've linked every deck in my collection to its Portfolio52 entry, so I guess I should do the same for WoPC and Deck Collect.

Would you be interested in helping with a P52 replacement? Or would that be considered a competitor to your website?

Ideally whatever website is created has links to other important websites. When Alex bought UC, he should have placed a link to it on the P52 site as each website has its purpose, but alas.

Regarding any WoPC registration issues, I've found the best way is clicking the "Sign in with Google" button on
this page; but if you're still getting issues just DM or email me and I'll set it up manually for you.
Bloody hell, your site is immense
Thank you! My dad started the site in 1996, and we've been actively working on the site again over the past year or so and really enhancing the functionality. With our main focus on enhancing our
Members system as well as tagging and categorising all of the content in our
Explore section.
Now, anyone can sign-up and become a Member to
start a playing card (or tarot) blog,
manage your collection, open a shop (
coming soon), and
Discussions. We also are the home of the
EPCS club, which we're planning on more closely integrating into the main WoPC site.
Would you be interested in helping with a P52 replacement?
That's my plan! We want to build this functionality right into WoPC, at the moment people can
- Create and curate lists such as "Sale List", "Swap List", "Your Collection"
- Add notes, quantity of items in your collection
- It's not perfect, but it does the job...
Here's a screenshot of what my collection page currently looks like (my actual collection is a LOT bigger than this : )
and on my To-Do list for the "Your Collection" feature is:
- Public collections, so you can display Your Collection on your profile page
- Setting it up so Members can add more metadata about the deck (designer, manufacturer, keywords)
- Swaps/Shop - so you can optionally sell items from your collection on WoPC
I'm totally open to feedback and suggestions, and I'm open to any type collaboration.

Ah, let me clarify -- in helping with a
new P52 replacement?
Right now it's looking like Deck Collect. The decks covered by WoPC are largely the sort of decks that were missing from P52! It had a massive blind spot for anything earlier than 2010
I would also love for 52 Plus Joker to be involved -- has EPCS ever worked with them before?
IMO this is too important of a resource to pick sides, I'm trying to pull everything together in one spot
