Would be a nice idea to have the skull on the backs of the cards. Probably be too much since it's on the front box as well.

I think the Skull would look great on the Back Card.

I'll definitely pledge for this one. It has a very cool look to it. The only comment I have on the Tuck front panel is the extra wide keening between the A and T in Pirates. It's the first thing I notice every time, which is a shame because the rest of the elements are sweet!

Thanks, Randy

That would be a much better typo than the one the Bicycle Pirate decks had (Piraue).

Update:

"Steampunk Pirates Launch Date

just a quick update to announce a couple of things. First off, I wanted to let you all know that I will be launching the Kickstarter campaign for the Steampunk Pirates Bicycle Deck on Sunday September 22nd at 2:30pm

I'm going to launching on air with LiveSpeak Radio, who interviewed me a few weeks ago. I thought it would be fun to make a little event of it, and share the experience with their listeners. As usual there will be some very cheap early backer specials, like a deck of cards for $6 w/US shipping included. "

Lol, I noticed the kerning too! Ha, it's been bugging me, but I didn't know anyone else noticed. I'll fix it for sure now! Just wanted to let you all know about a couple of other things I'll be offering. I'm having an antiqued gold finish coin minted right now, which I hope to have pictures of by Sunday, but may be early next week.

I am ALSO releasing a limited edition version (only 500 printed) with a silver tuck, foil/emboss/deboss, and an exclusive silver coin that comes included with the deck and won't be available elsewhere:

Interesting number cards (or "spot cards"). I'd like to see the courts though, as I'm hoping they'll look different from the back (to make a distinction).

I like the idea of a "live launch", and the launch time is also nice (though I might have thought otherwise had I lived in Asia).

I agree with this sentiment. While it's not a dealbreaker for me, i prefer it when custom decks adhere to these traditions, unless there is a compelling reason not to.

Can't say exactly why i feel that way, we never call wild cards in my poker games anyway! :?

I've actually been thinking about this before i saw this post. I had this king as the king of hearts but changed it to diamonds so that I could make a suicide king, only to realize this guy should be one eyed!

Can I safely make him a Spade?

Also, can someone list all the special face cards I should be aware of? I'm a newb.

Just give him an eye patch. He looks a bit too enthusiastic with that hook - accidents are bound to happen.

Not sure i'll get them all, and i'm sure some players are pickier than others:

One-eyed (usually shown in profile): KoD, JoS, JoH
KoD also is often called the "man with the axe"

and of course, the suicide king KoH

Yes, your KoD could become the KoS...

Edit: The eye patch, as MCJ suggested is another good strategy that has been used before.

I had that thought too. An eye patch would be a simple and easy fix that fits with the theme.

Heck, his one eye is almost shut as it is. I had to look closer to see if it was open. A nasty scar could be a cool alternative to an eye patch too... ;)

There are a couple of other traditions:

Courts for the Hearts tend to face left.
Courts for the Clubs: Jack tends to face right, Queen and King face left.
Courts for the Diamonds tend to face left.
Courts for the Spades tend to face right.

Each Queen typically holds a flower in her right hand (ie, on the left side of the image), except the Queen of Hearts, who holds it in the opposite hand.

All of the professional playing card companies tend to follow these traditions for their regular decks, but they are more often overlooked by the up-and-coming designers than, say, the idea of the Suicide King of Hearts, which is more iconic than the fact that of you place the J, Q, and K of Clubs next to each other, the Jack and the Queen are looking longingly at each other while the King takes notice.

Hope this helps!

(PS: I love the eye-patch idea.)

Good stuff Rousselle...

I shouldn't have said "pickier"; i should have said some people pay more attention than i do...

Update!!

"I'll make this very brief. As we approach the $30k stretch goal I wanted to share the Plunder Edition tuck design with you before it becomes available. And yes, it will be available as an add on. Foil/emboss/deboss super fancy, check it out!"

Nat, congrats on hitting $30K!

In looking to compare the Black Flag tuck to the new Plunder tucks, I noticed that all references to the Black Flag deck seem to have disappeared from the project description and remain only as part of the pledge level text which I understand is not editable once there is one or more pledge in that level.

I'm curious if there's a reason or if it's an unintended edit...

I'm not a fan of buying the same deck with a different tuck but this one I might because the Plunder deck tuck gives it more of a pirate feel with the jewels on it plus it's supposed to be shiny.

I'm on the Black Flag/Chutlhu tier so I'll add-on a couple of plunder editions. That deck looks fantastic. I don't think I'll even bother with the default pirates deck because plunder simply outshines it.

I'll try to sell the normal version of it and keep the plunder. This campaign, it's pretty much the same cards, just in 3 different tuck cases (besides Chutlhu and E&O).
