No, I have absolutely no connection with this creator or the deck.

I just kind of like it despite its faults - and have tentatively backed it on KS for one deck (at least for the moment as i am still not sure). I am on this thread because I would like to learn how others judge it so I have some yardstick against which to measure my assessment / affinity. And I wanted to tweak TwoPiece's nose a little...

But wow, you took a leap there - I would be fascinated to know why...

Because in an earlier comment I said: "Can't say I disagree about the first 3 points [really boring tuck case; one way back; lack of colour], and I would even add that the courts are underwhelming - somehow LESS impressive than the other cards." And if I was the creator, who PRODUCED the set of renderings for publication on KS, why would I have to ask about them ?

Not really sure how to feel - sort of flattered, a bit worried, but mainly baffled...

Right now I can only dream of being able to illustrate detail like that, but these just are not working for me, it just doesn't come together as a whole, particularly the tuck. To me, they come off as too overdone and generically steampunk, rather than classily steampunk. The monochrome isn't helping, even though adding colour often makes things worse as well, it's tough either way.

Also, I love steampunk (though it can easily be overdone), but particularly cyberpunk (can't be overdone). You would literally have to go out of your way to avoid exposure to either, particularly in film and video games, some brief examples. Hugo and Bioshock Infinite are considered Steampunk, Blade Runner and Deus Ex Human Revolution are considered Cyberpunk, Mad Max Fury Road and Wolfenstein The New Order are considered Dieselpunk, Star Wars and Dishonored are considered Arcanepunk, Repo Men and Bioshock are considered Biopunk.

Also, I don't really understand saying that steampunk sounds gay (awesome, great, enjoyable etc) but then saying you absolutely don't like it? That's a tough one to figure out.. As well as the fact that there's zero difference between gay people in a room playing punk or straight people doing it lol. And to ALR, sexuality can't be referred to as a preference, as a preference implies a choice, nitpicking I know, but I am a bit of a grammar nazi at times.

And to ALR, sexuality can't be referred to as a preference, as a preference implies a choice, nitpicking I know, but I am a bit of a grammar nazi.
A few points of order:

1. To introduce a bit of Nuremberg quality literary fascism into this thread, your quibble over my use of the word "preference" is not strictly speaking "grammar nazi[sm]" because you are not disputing the spelling, declension, or other aspect of construction or syntax, you are criticising the meaning - which is not the same thing at all;

2. If you were “a bit of a grammar nazi”, you would know that the correct number of dots in an ellipse is three, and you would use colons and semi-colons instead of commas to separate items in lists. You should also use “figuratively” instead of “literally” in “literally have to go out of your way to avoid” - again, not strictly grammar, but you should know, right ? And it is difficult to be "a bit of a grammar nazi" - the Nazis were not known for their tolerance of moderation in the level of belief or commitment to the cause - you might as well claim to be a bit of a virgin;

3. The word "preference" does not imply a choice in all situations - you may have chosen, incorrectly, to infer it in this particular instance but it is not universal. I, for example, have a preference to keep breathing and thus stay alive, but my autonomous nervous system does not give me any choice in the matter so I would keep breathing unless physically prevented from doing so. I have a preference, but no choice;

4. "Sexuality" can be referred to as a preference that involves choice - just ask a bisexual if their desire for men or women is the same in all circumstances at all times, or if they are capable of choosing between two suitors of different sexes at any one given point;

5. I did not use the word "sexuality", I used "sexual preference". An individual may like blondes of either sex, and dislike redheads, again, of either sex. That is a sexual preference which involves choice, but is not necessarily an issue of "sexuality" as you seem (admittedly not expressly but only by implication and context) to be using the term to describe a much more fundamental aspect, that of homo versus hetero;

6. In the societal and legal arenas, "sexuality" (more correctly, "sexual orientation") is, as you state, largely settled as a choice-free concept. However, in purely scientific terms, and particularly in psychology, the degree to which choice plays a part, if any, in sexual orientation is still a subject of reputable research and some debate. Not to mention the debatable nature of choice itself in those realms, to say nothing of metaphysical questions (e.g. pre-destination and karma) or quantum physics concepts. The nature of choice itself is not defined, so your use of the word in this context may be construed as hubristic and unwarranted;

7. I was not referring to any person's sexuality in my comments - I was questioning the ability of a deck of cards to possess a sexual preference. Do I really need to explain the impossibility of an inanimate object holding any "preference", by choice or by any other means ? If an inanimate object cannot even have a "preference", by choice or otherwise, why do you feel the need to invoke a "how many angels can dance upon the head of a pin" argument ? It is obvious from context that the deck of cards having a sexual preference motif was a reductio ad absurdum, and not a real hypothesis deserving of debunking;

8. My comment as a whole was a rhetorical device to criticise the original poster's (TwoPiece) use of "gay" as a pejorative term for describing a literary and artistic movement (Steam Punk), and by extension, this pack of cards. Surely a more suitable target for censure over word choice would be someone who uses a pejorative slang term that insults homosexuals rather than one who points it out and ridicules it ?;

9. The question has been asked if I am the creator of this deck of cards - but that is not the most ridiculous post aimed at me today on this thread.

Can we talk about cards again ?

But not before I have another pop at TwoPiece: Strummer; Jones; Simenon; and Headon - all you need to know about Punk Rock.

Congratulations, not only are you still wrong, but you've also made a fool of yourself and proven how pathetically petty you are about a minor correction. It's always the less intelligent who try to pass themselves off as more so, and it never gets any less hilarious. I guess you have to find something to fill the void of your life and this is what you've chosen. Can't accuse you of a lack of effort at the least. :lol: Maybe I can put it up on the fridge like your parents clearly never did, hence your obvious obsessive desire for any kind of attention!

No particular reason actually, it's a senseful thing cuz I'd be glad to know the creator came here to engage in the discussion, which I did encourage him/them to do on Instagram dm.

Probably my senses got me wrong this time :ugthink:

Guys ?

Only one personal attack occurred here (unless you include me naming the original members of The Clash at TwoPiece because he doesn't like Punk Rock ?).

Adonael called himself a "nitpicking grammar nazi" and I tried to prove he really wasn't...

ALR, I honestly don't disagree with you and found the logical breakdown of your post interesting to follow but can also almost hear the condescension seeping between the lines in the tone in which some points were written... from a person that can articulate himself and his arguments so well, I'm sure that wan't unintentional.

Anyways, my comment, on the other hand, was just intended to be a gentle reminder to everyone so things don't escalate any more than they clearly already have... y'all just gotta take a step back outta ya feelings for a moment and remember that we're here to engage in open discussion about the cards and not be slingin' mud at one another because of how we interpreted each other's words in whatever way that has seemed to cause enough offense to get things heated. As amusing as these little spats can be, comm'on now, that's not why we're all here so let's just keep calm and move along.

I apologise for the savage and vicious "Naming of the original members of The Clash" at you. It was hurtful and uncalled-for and I am truly sorry for the upset and severe emotional trauma it must have caused you. I will never "Name the original members of The Clash" at you or anyone else again.

Although two of them went on to form Big Audio Dynamite, so their names might be used in a drive-by "Naming of the members of a post-punk, electro-fusion dance ensemble with a respected, but not nearly as influential, catalogue as the founders' previous band (but they were sensational live - you better believe it !)" in your neighbourhood.

Remember when this thread was about a deck of cards?

I think there's a lot to like about this deck, although I am not generally a fan of typography decks, myself, and this one is similarly not "for me." Even so, I think the pips are really well done and the line work has a lot going for it.

I, too, briefly thought that ALR may have had some connection with the project creators, and I appreciated ALR's engagement with the conversation, asking serious questions in the face of some mud-slinging at the deck. It's hard to put my finger on why I thought there may have been a connection with the project creators, but it may have had something to do with the tone of their posts.

While I will not be backing this project, I wish them well and I hope they continue to hone their craft. Like everyone else on this board, my ultimate goal is to have more awesome cards to add to my collection, and the odds of that happening always increase when talented people do the work to improve their craft and keep pushing the boundaries of their talent further.
This space intentionally left blank.

Apologies to all for derailing this thread. Just goes to show the dangers of offering unsolicited and petty, humourless virtue-signalling criticism to complete strangers - most people don't like it and react badly, which is surprising, isn't it ?

Anyway, back to the deck of cards that I designed, all on my own, they're mine, all mine, you fools are lucky to have the chance to own my precious babies, I AM THE MIGHTY CREATOR ! HAHAHAHA... Oh dear... have I inadvertently let something slip ?

Oooh, look at the cards... pretty colours...mmmm, shiny...lots of foil... never mind the quality, feel the width...

No interest in Steam Punk; prefer two-way backs; wasn't even sure what a typography deck was; I am NOT the creator; just still kind of like them, though. Wish I knew why...

Dude, allow me to point out that somehow your mode of speech here walks the fine line between sarcasm and ranting, and it's not easy to tell apart the two.

So um... maybe just get over being mistakenly recognized as the designer (which initially would have been a compliment if you had realized how much I praised this deck) and move on to focus more on the genuine discussion about the deck itself. Deal? :lol:

I was just responding to Rouselle's post immediately above which brought up the creator issue again, with what I thought was a joke - you obviously did not appreciate it. C'est la vie.

But I do recognise the implied compliment: if you recall, I responded to your initial question:
Not really sure how to feel - sort of flattered, a bit worried, but mainly baffled...

I was "sort of flattered" to be mistaken for the Creator, but sure, I won't mention it again if it bothers you.

As for "move on to focus more on the genuine discussion about the deck itself", i was trying to do just that with my last sentence in my previous post... Can you offer a possible explanation for why it appeals to not just me, but you and many others (it is already well-funded on KS), despite the many criticisms it has received here on this thread ? Just to clarify: genuine question, asking for a genuine response, please.

There is a quick answer to that: every comment here made on every deck here belongs to its individual owner. Not every comment means the world and certainly doesn't necessarily represent the majority of opinions. Two Piece could have his say on whatever punk he hates hahaha :lol: :lol: :lol: , but it doesn't affect how I appreciate this deck for its first-time creator.

To be honest, this deck will and should irk a lot of long-time collectors because of its one-way back and front design and pip-less number faces. It's not the most usable card in terms of magic, cardistry, and gameplay, but for the sake of art, yeah, I dig it through a collector's perspective. Hope this answers!

This is an unusual thread. Glad I didn’t read it until after the campaign. I like the design and am in for two decks. I am a steampunk fan, and I thought it was well executed. Those that don’t like it can hold onto their money for another project.

I did think their retail price expectation was unrealistic at $23. But, disregarding that bit, I still thought the deck was worth supporting. Nearly 600 others agreed with me and it raised $20,000, which is fairly good.

It funded yesterday, but I was shocked that I was paying only £9 (around $13) with shipping to UK. I'd say it's extremely worth the money.
