Re: [Volantangel] Playing Cards + Photography
Fireproofing should be plausible...in theory.
I would probably encase the deck between two slabs of glass. Make sure to close off the sides with damp wood or something so the flames don't get in. Get a fire pit, fill it with damp wood and douse it with lighter fluid. Place the slab on top. Now place more moist wood on the slab and around the deck. Throw lighter fluid on it.
Get your camera ready. Have someone light it up and watch the flames go up! The damp wood shouldn't catch fire and shouldn't allow it to heat up enough to damage the deck (have some water ready just in case). You'll only have a short time before the lighter fluids burns up and leaves you with a dead fire pit.
Just spitballing........could work. Don't hold me responsible for damage to the decks.

Re: [Volantangel] Playing Cards + Photography
Echoing what everyone else said, those photos just look amazing. They even got me pulling out my Fathom deck and playing around with it.
Just wondering, how long would your deck last in the water using your waterproof method? Would it be possible to waterproof a deck, and put it in a small aquarium tank as a display? (with fish swimming around???)

Let's go talk about it here, changed the waterproofing thread into an against the elements thread. So we don't clutter up Kai's gallery.

Is the floating effect accomplished by putting some very black card or something below it giving the illusion of a shadow?

Re: [Volantangel] Playing Cards + Photography
Nope, i know the effect you are talking about, but thats a real shadow. Its larger than the deck because the light source was relatively low, stretching the shadow out a little more than usualAfrank8 wrote:Is the floating effect accomplished by putting some very black card or something below it giving the illusion of a shadow?

Re: [Volantangel] Playing Cards + Photography
This has to be one of the most amazing decks to come out this year. I think we have a contender for best innovation in a deck of cards this year. I know ive done the dark look many times, but i feel this is what brings out the best in the deck, and even then its even more amazing in your hands where you can see the glint of the foil in the light, simply amazing !

Re: [Volantangel] Playing Cards + Photography
Thanks Jase ! Regarding the fire, well you see its difficult capturing the fire and/or on the cards nicely in one picture, because the fire is so darn bright compared to everything else if i do it at night, and if i do it in the day, a fire would be difficult to see because everything is bright. I might opt for an "ember" effect but its nicer in a video, whatever the case, ill be experimenting !Jock1971 wrote:Welcome back my friend. Some Great Pictures as always.I`m really envious

Simply stunning work, Volant! You get better and better each time while your beginning was great, too!
Where did you get those decks? Are they available?

Absolutely stunning deck, Rick did a brilliant job on the Origins deck. Its a small pity about the gluing on the bottom of the deck. I might actually take it off and reglue it myself.

Thanks jase ! You don't typically see the embossing turn up well in the photos, so I try to make it a point to highlight the finer details in a deck

Truly amazing pics my friend. I have decided to try to learn to take better photos. Can you recommend a decent inexpensive camera to start with?

Re: [Volantangel] Playing Cards + Photography
What kind of camera are you looking for ? DSLR, Mirror-less, Compact ? They each have their pros and cons. I havent been camera hunting for quite sometime, but i would probably recommend some of the slightly older sony NEX cameras, which allows you full control and can be how you start doing photography =)nECr0MaNCeD wrote:Truly amazing pics my friend. Alternatively, what phone are you using? The gap between phones camera and actual cameras are shrinking drastically, the quality from any iphone 5 or samsung or etc are beginning to be comparable. The only thing is that it doesnt let you have full control over the effects you might want. Play around with it first, learn about composition. Everything else can be adjusted in post.
That brings me to my third recommendation, learn to use a photo editing software. It truly works wonders, Lightroom 5 is my recommended tool. If you dont have it, pm me ..

Re: [Volantangel] Playing Cards + Photography
My sister has a Sony NEX I can borrow. I have a cheap Nokia Windows phone. (I know, I feel so dirty!) Thanks for the tips. I have played around with Photoshop a bit but editing software has a steep learning curve. I have motivation now so maybe I will get batter.volantangel wrote:What kind of camera are you looking for ? Re: [Volantangel] Playing Cards + Photography
So some of you guys demanded fire ! Dont think i did a brilliant job, haha its incredibly difficult to take photos, control the lighting conditions and watch that the fire doesnt burn your finger off all at the same time . Dont worry ive only used the ad-cards, so the deck is still intact. Oh, and dont do this in your bedroom, the floor was full of ash by the time i was done
