Thanks, Duke! But that web site would not make for a very good Day Trip for my wife and me, so I am still hoping that Shermaine can answer my question.

Okay well I thought you wanted a store in Portland to buy them at and the studio is in Portland so thought I would help.

Thanks, I did not even try the link (my bad, sorry) and so did not know that.

With any luck, my wife and I will pop up to Portland one of these weekends and visit the studio (and pick up a deck or two).

They request you call ahead for the studio, looks like they are at an open market on part of the weekends.

Right. I'm thinking maybe the open market. I've sent them an email about it.

Here's a bunch of decks I got the other day. My boyfriend got them for on several stops during his vacation. The first one in the picture is an Illustrated Card deck featuring different places in Portland. He got it at a local shop in Portland, but this is actually one of the first playing card projects on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/94 ... ref=search" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.......
Could you find out the name of the shop? My wife and I live in Salem, only about a 45 minute drive south of Portland.
The second is a Hello Kitty deck he got at Narita airport in Japan.
Does it have Hello Kitty on the courts? There is a HK deck where the courts are all HK all dressed up as the courts. I saw images of the courts online years ago and spent lots of time in various HK stores trying to find it. Man, those stores each had TONS of decks, but the faces were always totally standard except for the joker and the Spade Ace. :( :( They usually sold them in a plastic case with the face of either the joker or the Spade Ace showing, leading me to think/hope that perhaps the courts were custom. I caught on after I bought a few decks, but never found the deck with the HK courts, though. :( :( :( :( I did find a couple of Sanrio decks with custom courts though, such as one with HK's frog friend KeroKero Keroppie on all of the courts, and his penguin friend (whose name I've forgotten) on all of the courts as well. It would be nice if I could find one with the custom HK courts to keep the others company some day...
The next two are decks featuring scenes of nature in Oregon and the Multnomah Falls and the Columbia River Gorge.
Okay, where did he pick these up? My wife and I have been trying to come up with some day trip destinations of late...

There is a spectacular drive along the Columbia River Gorge which was designed by the famous engineer Samuel Lancaster (dunno if we're related or not) in, I believe, the 1920s or so. We've only seen it on the web, and hope to drive it some day - knowing where your boyfriend got those cards would make the trip all the more worthwhile...
The last two are Japanese playing cards featuring different Japanese artwork.
I have two or three decks titled "HIROSHIGE PLAYING CARDS", each with different examples of Japanese art. I

Thanks for sharing those with us, and thank your boyfriend as well! (It almost makes up for his card-mutilating spree...) ;)
He got the 52 Illustrated Card deck at a Made in Oregon! shop at the Lloyd Center. He says you can also get them at the weekend market, though he didn't say specifically where that weekend market was. He told me that when he was studying in Portland last school year, he went to the weekend market and came across a booth selling these cards. The man selling it was the designer himself. He didn't get them at the time, but when his sister visited Portland (and he was already back here), she gave it to him as a souvenir and he thought to get one for me this time around, though he got it at the shop and not at the market.

I haven't opened my Hello Kitty ones yet. I'll probably be opening it the same time he opens his Batman decks. Is it weird that we like opening decks together? I always hold off on opening a deck until we both get to see it. Since he got back, we haven't had much time to ourselves. He's had to catch up with a lot of work since he's editor of the University magazine and has to edit a local film project for his cousin. Perhaps it was this deck that you saw? :O

http://pinktentacle.com/2007/09/solid-g ... ing-cards/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He got the top two decks on the right at the Multnomah Falls Lodge Gift Shop while he was there to see the Multnomah Falls. I just looked up the the Columbia River Gorge and it's beautiful! I haven't been to Portland myself, but going there for a drive would be lovely. :)

Decent haul this week:

I singled out the brown deck because it reminded me of the Pocono project that just ended with the courts and even the jokers.

The other is a game I found at the thrift store today for a dollar, looks like playing card bingo but there are a few other game modes in it. Thought it was pretty neat, the kids might like it too.

Also, I got a deck of rider backs that open in the front, what's that about? I had not seen that before.

That's what the KS creator should've done with the Poconos deck. Even if those animals aren't in the Poconos area, it would've been a better looking deck. There's that one Bicycle deck CBJ has/shown with all animal courts. The key is to use a lot of animals!

Hey RSL, i know a guy who's into cards who actually lives in Portland (wink, wink)...

I'm just catching up on this thread, and it looks like you got the info you need, but if you ever want any more advice about where to get cards, message me.
I guess i assumed that, living so close by, you'd already scoured this city.
Anyway, the "Made in Oregon" stores carry lots of the scenic souvenir style decks, they probably have those Multnomah Falls and CRG decks there as well. And BTW, there is a Made in Oregon store right in Salem too: 480 Center St. #242 Salem, OR 97301 Hours: Mon-Sat 10-8; Sun 11-6
Maybe check them out before you drive all the way up here... ;)
Of course, the CRG and Mult Falls are well worth the trip on their own, and that historic highway is indeed a beautiful drive, though only a few sections of it are still open to car traffic.

Also, for anyone who likes the style of those hand drawn Portland cards, they also have decks on their http://www.illustratedplayingcards.com/shop/ featuring: - Seattle - Seattle Brewery - Portland - Portland Brewery - San Francisco - Los Angeles - Las Vegas - Chicago - NYC - Washington, D.C. - Vancouver, B.C. - Paris - Rome - Eugene, OR...

Sorry, no.

[DebbieDownerMode+10]
Being stuck in a wheelchair, I have to rely on my wife to drive me anywhere I want to go. And, since she is not exactly jazzed about the money I spend on (and the room taken up in our home by) playing cards, I seldom ask her to take me anyplace just to buy cards.

[DebbieDownerMode+50]
Also, I am sorta gun-shy when it comes to going to places I've never been to before (like local Antique malls and the Salem "Made in Oregon" store), because it's such a downer to get somewhere only to find out that they aren't as "wheelchair-friendly" as they'd said on their web site, or on the phone.

[DebbieDownerMode+100]
And, even if I (and my wheelchair) could fit into a store which had loads of decks, I couldn't tell if I wanted to get any specific deck unless:
  1. its courts were pictured on the box, or
  2. its courts were on a display, or
  3. I opened the box and examined the cards inside, which is waaaay difficult, using only my one functioning hand.
This is why every single deck that I have bought since my stroke (nearly six years ago) was bought online (where I could go without needing to ask for a ride, and then only from sites/pages where the deck's courts are displayed), other than a few decks I've purchased at a local Target Store (where we were already going to buy other stuff anyway), and the courts of which I had already seen online.

So no, I have done no "scouring" at all of late, especially not in "the real world".

[/DebbieDownerMode]
Anyway, the "Made in Oregon" stores carry lots of the scenic souvenir style decks, they probably have those Multnomah Falls and CRG decks there as well. And BTW, there is a Made in Oregon store right in Salem too: 480 Center St. #242 Salem, OR 97301 Hours: Mon-Sat 10-8; Sun 11-6

On a more positive note...

Here's a new addition, found on eBay:
==========[ GarudaIndonesia ]==========
http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u570/RSLancastr/GarudaIndonesia_zpsd76c45b6.jpg
An airline deck from Garuda Indonesia, "The airline of Indonesia":

https://www.garuda-indonesia.com/int/landingpage.page

The deck has very colorful custom courts, but evidently, the deck designer wasn't up on playing card traditions, because the deck has:
=====[ a totally healthy King of hearts... ]=====
http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u570/RSLancastr/heart2_zps247e9198.jpg

=====[ but a "Suicide" Jack of clubs??!!?? ]=====
http://i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u570/RSLancastr/title_zps5bffb7fa.jpg
It also has NO one-eyed Jacks, but it at least DOES have a one-eyed King of Diamonds.

Regardless, it's a colorful and welcome addition to my collection.

So this one should look familiar to all of you, especially Eoghann. I saw this posted the other day here and was curious about it - when I saw it going for a good price on ebay I 'pulled the trigger' (see what I did there - it's a hunting deck  ). Anyhow, it arrived today and is a pretty neat deck from a surprising source. Getting the wood case is a bonus, but since the hinge is not the best and I won't be keeping this in it, nor am I hunter enough to want to use it elsewhere, not sure what will become of it. I suppose I might somebody sand the face to be plain and fix the hinge for general use.

Interesting one, and it must be universal. I've got a deck that fits that description exactly, down to the crappy hinge about to come off at one end. I guess it goes with the "Made in China" emblem on the bottom of the box? The bottom of the box is 'pasteboard' or pressed wood chip instead of real wood.

My deck is unopened, but I've seen it advertised before and it has a nice set of courts in it (Robert, you listening?):
(this is not my picture, I went and found it on eBay)

OK, the last part ('are you listening') was because of the interesting courts in that deck of "North American Hunting Club Life Member" cards.

Here's the one I saw: (looks to me to be the same cards in a different tuck)

Like Jay said: surely not a coincidence, right?

My best goody today: a mint Waddington pair in red velvet box, sweet! Hard to date, but I'm going to say late 60's early 70's?“

I also found and bought a Perfection "Leaders" (Hochman PU4) in excellent condition for $49, but I will have to wait until it arrives to show pix. Typical of 1880's decks, no Joker, no box. I was surprised that nobody bid against me on eBay. That particular one is worth about $150 or maybe $200 sans Joker and box, maybe $300 if it had them. The listing was slightly off, but I always look for misspelled and screwy / miscategorized listings. It wasn't under "Playing Cards", also.

It didn't have a number. But as soon as I took it out of the pouch, a fire bolt fire scrawled the number upon the board. Leaving a smell of brimstone in the room. Spooky.

Nice one!

Careful using that pick on your guitar, though. :D

A nice goody indeed!

Looking forward to seeing your "Leaders" when they come in as well!

Hah, thanks Robert! It's actually a mini planchette, not a guitar pick. The other side of the little wooden board is a ouija board, much like the print above it. So the planchette is meant for that.

Well, duh! (Thus, the :D in my previous post).

And now...

Two new ones in just yesterday:

Finally got mine (via eBay).

I wasglad to find it has custom courts (and jokers), as I had yet to see images of any of the cards.

I am unable to try the anamorphic photo trick on the additional cards. Not only would I be loath to cut up a playing card, I am unable to, because:
  • It would require the use of two hands (and only one of mine is functioning), and
  • I don't see the "dotted lines" which are purportedly on the card, and
  • I only have a crappy cell phone camera with no close-up capabilities.
I have thought of a way I'm going to attempt the trick regardless of the above. If it is successful, I will report back here.

Interesting!

I wonder, is there a Red version of the deck? Because both of the jokers in my copy (which is Blue-backed) are holding (or using) playing cards which appear to be Apocalyptica cards, some of which have blue backs, and others, red backs.

In web searches I have learned that "Apocalyptica" is also the name of:
  • A musical group of some sort, and
  • A 2004 game for the PC.
...These appear to be unrelated to the deck, however.

Ok, time for me to break the rules. I'm going to use the excuse that it won't let me add more than 4 pix per message...

Today's haul: first up another pair of mint Waddington "Shakespeare" decks still sealed.

Trying to stick with some kind of theme, the last pix is a pair of older Sherlock Holmes decks by either Cartimundi or Bierman. Oddly, it's marked "Made in Belgium" but without opening the decks I can't be certain. I know that there are/were others in Turnhout, but not enough to ID this particular maker.

Next up, some new Bikes. The Porcelain deck and Old Masters standard and Limited Editions.

Also a pair of pix of a mint Tom Thumb (AARCO) mini deck I have seen called by several names, but I will go with the odd "Pink Stallion".

And finally a dual advertising deck by Southern Railroad that gives no clue as to the maker, but has some odd format to the faces: unusually small size with large indices.

Any ideas? I have examined the cards, the box, looked under the insert, inside and outside the case - Napa. One antebellum / old South and one futuristic / forward-looking bridge sized decks. I'm going to go with mid-60's because of the packaging and "future" deck.

(and IHNI why I get sideways images in the two previous posts - these all came out right side up, I even removed one, spinned it 90° and it still came out sideways. Strange... I'm guessing the smartphone has some sort of "bearings" point to the top or something it puts in the ExIF that nothing else recognizes.)

When I get my Bicycle Oracle deck, I might just use the Ouija board thingy to see if it works........oh, I need to add the Porcelain deck to my list. Like somebody said, how people in Asia get those cards before someone in the US? I live like 30 mins from USPCC, it sucks they don't have a store like they did at the old location.

The red deck was a stretch goal during the KS but was not met.
