‘Different from’ is the standard phrase. Most scholars obstinately avoid ‘different than’, especially in simple comparisons, such as You are ‘different from’ me.

However, some of the experts are more tolerant of ‘different than’, pointing out that the phrase has been in use for centuries, and has been written by numerous accomplished authors.

I am obviously not a scholar  but have read many accomplished authors, so maybe that’s why I didn’t catch it

I love the transparency of the process on the campaign and the 'risks and challenges' section. Also the fact that you're letting us cast an eye over the page before going live. Ill take your lead on this one.

Are there any shipping fulfilment centres in Europe you could use? I'm not sure on your shipping costs as the page isn't live but it appears even the US don't get free shipping. I think this could put off a lot of smaller backers (especially ROW) so personally I'd offer more meatier middle of the range rewards where shipping costs don't put people off so much as they don't seem like such a huge % increase from the smaller ones. That way you'd give the fence-sitters more of an incentive to back at a higher level.

I'm also keen to know if there's a Europe shipping available since shipping from US is always pricey for a small pack...
But totally understandable if there isn't; I'll still sell my liver (no kidneys left).

First off thanks for the comment and for the encouraging words.

So I'm coming up on almost my 7-year anniversary doing nothing but designing and shipping playing cards, and the one thing that has always remained is that shipping from the US to other countries sucks.

I have tried fulfillment companies, international forwarding companies, I've even tried offering Kings Wild Fulfillment as a fulfillment service exclusively for playing cards. Every designer is different so all of these comments are from my own point of view, so please take them with a grain of salt.

Due to my own personality and also the amount of unique finishing "things" I do on the back end I have pulled more and more of the complete process under my roof. While this is more expensive and time consuming for both me (production cost & turnaround) it is also unfortunate for you / buyer when it comes to shipping.

However, with this added cost on both ends, it ensures that you get the not only the highest quality product but also the highest quality shipping.

Another topic that is discussed frequently is "handling" handling for me and my decks is a very real thing and not just an extra cost that is tacked on to squeeze even more out of the consumer. With invocation specifically, I will be assembling most if not all of the decks I produce in house. Over the past year, I have found a small team of people, that work for me seasonally, that I have poured into, and have developed as great playing card assemblers.

Because of these factors, I am able to do things that are more unconventional or that a larger volume machine couldn't handle. The belly bands and handwritten edition number on the Gilded Invocations are a good example.

Shipping has always been a nuisance and it will continue to remain so, at least for Kings Wild Project, as the benefits that come with doing it my self greatly outway the possible business I lose from the shipping being unfavorable to a specific person.

As for offering free shipping, IMO free shipping really doesn't exist. The price of shipping is just built into the cost of the item, as the sender will never get free postage.

I have accepted shipping as a necessary evil and am comfortable in being transparent in my method of shipping and fulfillment only because I do my best to make the product worth the cost that people sacrifice for shipping.

I try to keep my shipping cost as fair as possible and charge what I get charged. I will go ahead and apologize to all of you fine people that live in Australia and Russia, these are the two most expensive countries for me to ship to.

I hope this answers your questions and sheds a little light on my process and thinking.

For example here is a screen grab of my shipping software shipping to example postal codes in Russia & Australia. This price also doesn't reflect a handling fee is added. This is simply what the postage cost me.

The example package below contains the following items:
  • 1. 00 Padded Uline Mailer
  • 2. 1 Deck Uline Indestruco box
  • 3. 1 Deck bubble pack for inside the Indestructo box
  • 4. 1 3.8 oz deck

Total weight around 8oz

@JacksonRobinson

No worries, mate. It's just a minor inquiry on my part to wish that there is a way to reduce shipping, which as a matter of fact is a fundamental issue underlying each and every project out there. Given the quality of your productions, I see no reason having to be concerned about the additional cost on shipping.

However, I do have an absurd question about your Kickstarter production. Since I'm not familiar how you operate your Kickstarter campaign in the past, I was wondering if there is a possibility of throwing in an add-on option for any decks that are still available on your website?

I know your pain. I'm lucky being in Europe really - I can ship something to Gambler's Warehouse for example and they can then distribute everywhere in the US for relatively cheap. However here in Europe, whilst I get quite good shipping from UPS to the EU, it's not as cheap as it should be. 1 deck costs about €10 to ship by UPS to France, even though it's close. I work in Switzerland, but because it's outside the EU it costs around €30 to ship there even though it's down the road.

So I've managed to build shipping costs into the budget as long as they're buying more than X amount, for both US and EU, but I'm not sure that anything can exist here in the EU that provides a really good rate of shipping if the goods are produced in the US. Which is a huge shame.

That said your general RoW costs are quite good, even to Aus and Russia. Considering. They'll be used to it anyway when it comes to buying online. I wish there was a way to bring it down.

On the plus side, most Kickstarter backers are in the US, so the fact that we can offer cheap shipping there is a bonus.

@ Jocu

I think Gambler's is a solid option. I used Gambler's for about a two year period and was very pleased with their service.

Jackson, I was just looking over your Kickstarter draft and it’s getting me super excited for the launch on Saturday. Also, that song... wow! I can see how it was so inspiring. One thing that I noticed though is I think the number of gilded decks of each edition available in the pledge tiers add up to 285, whereas the campaign states that 250 of each edition will be printed.

Here are my actual postage cost and breakdowns for this project. Unfortunately, as you can see the "Rest of the World" is catching up with Russia and Australia.

The prices below are Postage + $1.00 S&H Also Kickstarter rounds up or down $0.50. This will give you a clear idea of what to expect on Saturday.

@Jackson- on the gilded copper edition tuck, the tuck and the band appear to be 2 different colors or finishes. The tuck appear to be almost gold and the band is copper. What is the difference? The standard tuck looks to be all the same copper color.

Historically I have always either numbered the Legacy Set itself and not the decks inside so the gilded decks inside will be matching numbers and number 1-50 or 75 depending on how many Legacy Sets I do in the end. They aren't counted in the NON-Legacy Gilded deck edition numbers. I hope that makes sense.

Jackson, thanks for the details about the shipping!! That's very good insight for some "laypeople" like me

Also, don't know if you've skipped over my question above, but would be nice to have a clue up front before asking during the campaign. Thanks ;)

Sure thing, unfortunatley offering old decks from previous projects is (In my interpretation) against Kickstarter Guidelines.

Here is a link to the list of rules I am referring too.
https://www.kickstarter.com/rules/prohibited?ref=rules

I'll quote the specific rule as well.

"Projects that share things that already exist, or repackage a previously-created product, without adding anything new or aiming to iterate on the idea in any way."

Got it, then I'll have to seek your previous decks elsewhere.
Thanks for the explanation!

The Tuck its self and the Belly Band are printed on different color stocks. Below I have taken a quick pic of the actual papers I am using for this project. My phone's camera does NOT do the color of the papers justice.

What about old decks as add-ons in a post-campaign backerkit? If you use BK, that is.

Yes, this would work. I could try and offer old decks (the ones I still have inventory of) in Backerkit, post-campaign.

Thanks Jackson!! Happy that you're considering :D
Not to say that you have to now after saying this, but plz keep us posted if you've made up your mind to do so in post-campaign.

Excited for your launch tomorrow, Jackson. You are the Brandon Sanderson of artistic production - just a machine. I saw your Pi and Labyrinth decks for your subscription service and realized I missed the boat when I was looking at that slot in December. In any case, I will not be missing this launch. Best of luck and I am loving my Maduros! Cheers

Thanks for your kind words.

The really ironic thing about your phrase, that makes me very happy, is I love Brandon Sanderson, and I just finished solidifying a licensing deal with Dragonsteel (Brandon's IP company) and hopefully if I can get the work done in time I will be launching my first officially licensed Stormlight Archives themed deck on Kickstarter in Julyish. And if all goes well with that we will move onto the Mistborn series.

I am not currently into the Mistborn series, but I did get some cool Mistborn coins on Kickstarter last year. They have a big and rabid fan base!

BaconWise wrote:Excited for your launch tomorrow, Jackson.
