Thanks for sharing!

It didn't make sense for Summer to be a recolour, hence taking much longer than maybe some people expected (not that there was any rush)

Completely new courts and backs as we explore botany and associated folklore from warmer climates, mainly based around Sicily and the mediterranean.

We'll need a whole new book with this one in the long run, but for now I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it myself and lining it up next to the rest of the series!

So it's been a while since this thread was front page! We have lots of big news on the green man front, and we're finally close to launching the quintessential Green Man (and Jocu) project.

Ever since we started with the theme of TGM we knew it had a lot of potential. As well-received as it was in 2019, we simply didn't have the support or experience to pull off what we always wanted to be a vast adventure through forest folklore and the botanical world.

We believe we've done it with The Return of The Green Man - and you can follow the Kickstarter page now to ensure you get all the latest launch news.

The Return of The Green Man finally tells the story as we envisioned:
  • 48 different court characters from legends involving plants and trees. Real characters from the folklore and legends of the Celts, Romans, Greeks, Anglo Saxons, Vikings and more!
  • 208 different plants and trees represented - yes Alessandra really has designed 208 unique real-world plants and tied 48 of them to their respective characters. All of this will be explained in the accompanying book
  • Four season-themed decks with unique artwork and colour schemes
  • The design style of the backs and boxes now takes its inspiration from where The Green Man is mainly found - in ancient architecture and stone buildings along with medieval churches (hence the stained glass influence on the colours)
  • Extensive links between the decks and the characters creating a complex web of connections between the stories including through the choice of plants and seasons. For example, whilst GM1 had the unique Jack of Spades mulberry bush which combined the two lovers Pyramus and Thisbe, now EACH Jack of Spades contains a parallel story of star-crossed lovers who were transformed into trees. Elsewhere the Queen of Spades in each deck is a woman transformed into a plant or tree, or perhaps the four Kings of Diamonds are linked through their stories as being jealous lovers, and so on.
  • All decks are cold foiled.
The campaign decks will be the 'standard' versions, whereas Inner Circle members have their own special variants with unique tuck, gilding and a collectors box.

More on this soon!

Inner Circle members are also looking forward to The Green Man Four Seasons, the long-delayed but almost ready 'ultimate' version of the original Green Man.

It's a 'whist deck' combining the original decks into a single four-season deck. Each suit is a season, and has its own colour scheme. A traditional four-colour deck for playing Whist, it's also good for folks with colour blindness :)

Here are some WIP of the cold foil backs. These are now in-hand and about to be assembled after ONDA. The foil looks great!

Whist is the main game we play for now - if you don't know how we have the rules up on the Game Night section of our site as well as a two-player variant which we play a lot!

WOW! These are just perfection! A worthy revisit that makes them EVEN BETTER!
OG Green Man, where Spring and Autumn shares the same courts, Winter has the same courts as Spring and Autumn made as plants without leaves, and Summer have completely different thing

Now, every deck is different!

I really like the colors chosen for the backs and tucks. I hope they are the same or very similar to the finished product.

Thanks!

The paper has been chosen already, so the tucks and foils themselves are matched already.

The backs can change slightly due to printing, but WJPC did a great job with The Green Man Four Seasons (above) with the foil green as it matched the mockup exactly, and we'll insist again on them matching the photos as closely as possible. (this is actually necessary as the process of printing cold foil involves mixing colours in a way that's not easy to predict, but they know what they're doing and we provide clear references)

Just to clarify, The Green Man Four Seasons is one deck for IC members? If so, I think this is the first time I realized that the Green Man is 4 decks, but the Green Man Four Seasons is 1 deck. Kinda counterintuitive in my head

Green Man is a 4 deck series.
Return of the Green Man is a 4 deck series designed to be the full potential of Green Man now that Jocu has gotten better at playing card design.
Green Man Four Seasons is 1 deck with four color suits designed to play Whist with.

"Green Man is a 4 deck series." This is the old series of decks? I guess what I'm saying is the https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/di ... -green-man should be called Green Man Four Seasons, since there are 4 decks, one per season. And The Green Man Four Seasons should be called Return of the Green Man, since there's 1 of these decks.

I think it's 4 decks for IC. Otherwise that would be an expensive deck. It's a bit confusing to me.

If I read correctly, simply put:
The Green Man (or OG Green Man V1) = 4 decks: Spring, Autumn, Winter, Summer

The Return of the Green Man (or Green Man V2) = 8 decks: 4 Standard, 4 IC Exclusive
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter
Standard will be standard, no gilding
IC Exclusive are gilded and comes with special collector's box

The Green Man Four Seasons = 1 deck - IC Exclusive (unless later to be released to public)

Oh it would've been much clearer had we been on time! I appreciate it might be confusing for those out of the loop which, by now, is likely everyone.

Green Man Four Seasons - 1 deck - Inner Circle deck Aug-Dec 2023.
  • 1 gilded variant, 1 standard variant
The Return of The Green Man (post-campaign, Green Man V2) - 4 decks - joint Kickstarter and IC for entire 2024
  • standard variants available on Kickstarter
  • IC gilded, display variants only through IC package
Appreciate that the name is confusing now, but GM4S (four seasons) was meant to come out in late 2023, and is the four seasons of V1 in one deck (like the pizza).

We'll be clarifying everything directly with the Inner Circle soon but we need to be careful not to muddy the waters too much on public forums so we'll just talk about Return of The Green Man here and keep further talk about IC decks on Pip Tuck and email.

The key thing that IC members should know is that the standard decks on the campaign will not be in the IC package and vice versa.

Daphne - The Laurel Tree (Bay Leaf)

Clytie the water nymph would not be the only woman transformed due to her relationship with the sun god Apollo. In fact he would later find himself hopelessly in love with another spirit - the forest nymph Daphne.

Having dedicated herself to a celibate, spiritual life amongst the trees, he father - the river god Peneus - was enraged by the thought of her not giving him grandchildren. Whilst he eventually relented, he knew that her beauty would make it impossible to keep suitors at bay.

Apollo, immediately falling in love with Daphne upon chancing across her during his travels, pursued her across miles of forest. Even the swiftest of the gods struggled to keep pace with her light steps and agile movements.

She successfully resisted his pursuit, despite him receiving aid in the form of Eros' wings, right up until she arrived at her father's waters. Desperate for protection, she begged her father to change her into something that hid her beauty.

Her transformation into a laurel tree did little to halt Apollo's advances. He doted on her, using her wood to make his bow and lyre, and blessed her with his own eternal youth to render her evergreen. And it is these evergreen leaves that appear in Apollo's hair in many of his depictions.

The number cards across the four decks each feature unique plants - 160 in total on the number cards in addition to the 48 vivid designs on the courts.

Of course!

All the winter courts are either stripped of their leaves or are evergreen plants like pine or juniper.

The plants chosen for the numbers are as they appear in that season and linked to the season elementally. So each season represents in herblore one of the four elements, as does each species of plant. These will be connected like this :)

Single decks are a bit much for me especially with shipping. I like to save on a bundle but don't want the book. How about 4 deck bundles for standard and gilded that don't include the book?

Yeah with shipping it's become a bit uneconomical to sell single decks through Kickstarter unfortunately as we already absorb some of the cost, but we're hoping the discounts on the 4-deck bundle with everything all in are attractive enough. The EB price for that is discounted further, and the book is a seriously big part of the whole experience of the deck (although I appreciate that many of you will be only interested in the cards!). There's a huge amount of work gone into the thought processes behind the decks and artwork so the book is a really important part of the experience and will also be printed to a really high quality by Boschiero.

You won't regret the extra couple of euros to include it - plus it means you get the display box to boot.

Anthony, is the Deluxe edition different than the one offered to Patrons?

I feel a bit discouraged if there is now a third variant of the entire set. I have every variant of every Jocu deck at this point, but I have had to be very financially mindful lately, which is why I'm asking.
