Nice!

I have the "moving stars" one from the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, as well as a "Sam, the American Eagle" one from that same Olympics, both bought AT those Olympics (I lived near LA at the time). I have one deck from the Atlanta Olympics. I want to pick up the London set sometime as well. What is the gold-colored one at the right?

That gold one is the Angry God of Wealth deck. Just happened to come the same day so it made a cameo with the Olympic load. That's excellent that you went to the '84 Games. On my bucket list to go to the Olympics!

Yeah, even for US shipping it was 10 bucks for 2 decks via USPS. That's 7 dollars more than usual and it shipped in a standard padded envelope.

Guys, quick question:

What's the difference between:

Image

AND

Image

Is it just the tuck? As far as I can tell the back is the same, except the rider back I have was printed in Ohio.

Thanks!

My impression is that those are the two "main" tuck designs for their most sold deck, and they've gone back and forth between the two a few times.

But that is just my impression and I don't know for sure.

Same cards, different tuck. The standards are just a Tuck box redesign of the 808 Riderbacks. They have rereleased the Riderbacks in the old style tuck box but when they did the changed the model number to 807. So now you have...

Classic Riderback 808's in the old tuck box
Classic Riderback 808's in the new Standard tuck box
Classic Riderbacks in the old tuck box but renamed 807's

Or in simpler terms...

Speaking of which: How many here buy what they know will be a deck identical to one they already have, just because it has a different tuck?

Offhand, I don't recall ever doing this myself.

It happens. Tuck really has to stand on its own, I'm looking to complete a set (*cough* Fed52 *cough*), or they're inexpensive enough to not really care (various Bicycle examples).

I've only done it with Fed52 and Venexiana. I'm drawing the line with Black Book.

Kdklown got it right, here's some pictures of all the decks.

"New" 807

I've noticed that the old and new 808s are a slightly different blue, not as different as the front of the boxes though. I don't know about the 807s since I don't have any of those.

And here's a couple of similar decks

Okay, here's today's acquisition:
==========[ Bicycle_TieDye_1 ]==========
Image
Like most other merz67 efforts, this one has standard courts (other that the King of Hearts (pictured), who is eschewing his role as the "Suicide King" , replacing it with a 1960's approach.

In merz67's Bicycle_TieDye_2 deck, which I am ordering today, the courts are all wearing tie-dyed shirts, and every pip on every card contains a peace symbol, taking the deck's 1960's theme even further.
The catch of today:

My scanner sometimes produces "foggy" images when the subject has a dark background, and did so with the Shadow deck here.

Got my Amber Stag decks in the other day along with 1 red & 1 blue 807 box. I do like the Amber Stags, they look better in person than in the promo shots. Also, I love the smaller font for the indexes that were used in this deck. Love when designers do that.

Today's addition to my Bike collection:
==========[ Bicycle_TieDye_1 ]==========

==========[ Bicycle_TieDye_2 ]==========
Image
Actually, I got the first one (and posted it here) a week or so ago.

I repost it now for comparison purposes.

I got the second one today. It differs from the first in a few ways:

1. The jokers are different, depicting two 1960's-type buttons.
2. Pips on EVERY CARD contain a Peace Symbol (not just on the Spade Ace, like the first deck).
3. The courts are all decked out it tie-dye colors! (It doesn't work as well as I'd imagined, as the Tie-Dyed colors do not work well with the standard-colored ornamentation on the outfits.

I think I prefer the second, as it takes the decks' 1960's theme a bit farther than the first does.

Sweet score man! I just got my October decks yesterday and I was surprised to see that they have the raised ink on the tuck box....are they embossed or is it raised ink? Nice score on the David Blaine decks!

Here are some decks I got recently, including a trade with SilvaAce for the Plumas.

The swell guy that he is, he sent me two deck protectors and red and blue Dragon Back decks for free as well. Thanks dude! :D

I also got these off eBay, the kind of purchases you make at 3am when you're online and feel like you NEED to buy something. They were cheap enough that I didn't regret it the next day. The Magna decks are cigarette ad cards printed by USPCC. The stock is crazy thin - is this normal for advertising decks? I pretty much bought them cos the Magna badge is reminiscent of the Strokes logo circa "Is This It". ;)

Definitely agree with you about the Stroke's logo, that's the first thing I thought of when I saw the pic. Not sure if the thin stock is normal or not, but that wouldn't surprise me too much since the decks were probably given away as promotional items with a product purchase. Also, the Aces over Kings set was a Marlboro promo back when they had the Marlboro Miles on their packs. I have the same set except I actually sent in tons of miles for mine back in the day, lol. I've always liked that set, even though it's made in China and obviously not USPCC quality.

At first my mind recalled the famously thin stock of the Virginia Slims decks and thought "maybe it is normal", but then I remembered the famously thick RJRTC Bee "Watermelons" and quickly abandoned that hypothesis. I assume that if the company who orders the deck doesn't specify, they get the cheapest (and therefore thin) stock. Not to say that "thin" is synonymous with "cheap", the V-Slims are some of the best handling decks of their era.

The Aces Over Kings were listed as a Marlboro promo, but I did wonder what somebody had to do to redeem them - so thanks for providing the answer, Charlie! Based on your comments, I think I will just keep them sealed as I bought them based on their ersatz Tally-Ho type tuckcase. :)

Thanks for the info, Randy! I'm a fan but that's new info to me. Makes sense for the band though. They always did like to appropriate 70's and 80's pop culture.

I will be getting some Virginia Slims in the mail in probably two weeks's time, so I'll try to compare these two decks when I have the time. I do think you're right about the company getting the cards printed on the cheapest stock. There's nothing custom about the Magna cards other than the backs... And even then, some of the backs have slight variations in colour tones! :shock:
