Very interesting info!

And yep, you do have then reversed. Baraja is a deck and naipe is a single card. Although its common to refer to them as "un juego de naipes", a set of naipes.

Espadas, Oro, Copas y Bastos are Spades, Diamonds, Hearts and Clubs respectively.
That auto parts deck is pretty funny. I'll have to look into procuring one. :)

Man, wish I'd been at thrift stores when those holders were a dime a dozen. I'd have a teeny tiny "library" by now!

I had this deck for a little while. Made from USPCC. I showed one because the jokers are the same. I'm a Pepsi guy btw.

Thanks for the correction, but I have to disagree with your translation of "juego de naipes".

"juego" means "play" or "game", not "set". "juego de naipes" translates literally as either "play of cards" or "game of cards", and is the Spanish term/phrase for both "card game" and "playing cards".

That is my understanding, anyway.
Espadas, Oro, Copas y Bastos are Spades, Diamonds, Hearts and Clubs respectively.
They "are" those things? No, they are Swords, Gold/Coins, Cups and Cudgels,

Did Espadas. Coins, Cups and Cudgels "evolve" over time into Spades, Diamonds, Hearts and Clubs? I think the jury is still out on that one.
That auto parts deck is pretty funny. I'll have to look into procuring one. :)
Check your PMs.

I wonder if anyone knows how many different Coca-Cola decks have been issued. It seems like there are several every year - It would not surprise me to learn that there are more than a hundred by now!

I've got one or two Pepsi decks. I'm a Pepsi guy too (or was, until I gave up drinking all of that caffeine, and became a Sierra Mist guy - until I gave up drinking all of that sugar, and became a Crystal Light guy. Now I'm a Mio guy (it's more convenient and comes in more flavors than Crystal Light). I haven't had a soda in a few years now, and I don't miss it! (nor do I miss all of the pounds I've lost!)

RS I believe you are correcting someone who actually comes from the culture you are correcting them about. :?

That's a great haul of cards you just got Eoghann. I especially like that bizarre joker card from the 1970 Fournier No. 25, and the Bielefelder Playing Card Co. one riding the cat. Often in an otherwise traditional deck the joker can really be far out there.

Hopefully the "Theater of Misspent Youth" will come around for another try, although I still say the pool halls I knew in my youth were never that ritzy.

I also have and like the abstract work of The Deck quite a bit. It is the outer limit of face value representation but that just adds to the full range of card imagery that's out there. I could see getting together with a bunch of fellow artists to play with these. Once money is on the table it becomes much easier to remember which cards are which.

Thanks a lot dazz!

Yeah the Vitoria joker is really something. Vitoria No.25 is not like a traditional deck though. It's modeled after the french style including jokers, 8s, 9s and 10s. My guess is to appeal to a broader audience.
Chuck did mention he's planning on bringing the TOMY deck for another go, but this time he's going with MPC.

Yes, I thought that might be the case, since he had said that a Spanish-suited deck was the first deck he had ever encountered. He later waved his status as a "Native Speaker of Spanish" at me in a PM, and I put him in his place by telling him of the two grueling semesters of Spanish I had taken in high school...thirty-some years ago...and in which I had earned a solid C grade.

So you can see who has the better credentials in the discussion.

Okay, here's an odd little deck:

==========[ SnoopyMagic ]==========
Image
Sold by Hallmark, this miniature deck is NOT one of the "Peanuts Miniature" decks I've posted here so many times.

The courts are different (which is why I bought it), and it is sold as a single long sheet, folded into seven sections, each of which contains eight cards (the four extra spaces are used for instructions on how to perform a "magic trick" so lame I won't even describe it.

Rather than use a pair of scissors to cut the individual cards ("cut along the dotted lines!"), I just scanned the various sections and used a graphics editor to edit them down to the cards I wanted for the grid.

There was no joker and no box.

And I paid way too much for it ($9.99) on eBay

It's been an absolutely ridiculous couple of days. I've been waiting on a number of packages and they all seemed to arrive at once.

I'm trying to take my time opening them and not do the "5 year old on Christmas morning" routine.

...and I'm saving Fed 52 for last...

Ocean's 13 is normal courts.

Sin City has panels from the graphic novel on the cards; . So kind of cool, though not nearly as cool as if Frank Miller had designed actual playing cards.

It may be a couple of days, but I'll post some photos when I get a chance.

Got my deck of Domo cards in the other day. Courts are same across the different suits, but all the others are different. Nice little change IMO. Handling wise, not good at all, not that kind of deck. But they are rather cool nonetheless.

Nice one, chach!

FYI: those decks where the courts "are same across the different suits" are usually described in card collector catalogs with the notation "courts repeat"

And, those decks where all deuces have the same image, all treys have the same image, etcetera, are usually described in catalogs as "suits repeat".

I could never justify paying for these.

It was a trade, and the decks I traded made this a no brainer for me.

Nice!

I have the "moving stars" one from the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, as well as a "Sam, the American Eagle" one from that same Olympics, both bought AT those Olympics (I lived near LA at the time). I have one deck from the Atlanta Olympics. I want to pick up the London set sometime as well. What is the gold-colored one at the right?
