Foil Playing Cards by Jason Nguyen! live on KS

Unread post by jerichoholic »

He's baaack! And now he's using a new company name and has a new deck, which is decent, however metalluxe will only drive up his costs and decrease the chances of funding. Not a big fan of people starting over with new identities like this either. At least it looks like it took more than 4 hours

As far as design goes, this is his best project he has done. It is not the best, but really not that bad either. Most of the courts look weird, but the queen of Spades for example looks pretty nice.

If this does not fund, I hope that he tries again with this, this is his first project thats design grabs my attention. Also got give props for trying to use foils and metal-luxe etc. Go big or Go home, I guess.

I think this is his best deck. For some reason he decided to go huge though. MetalLuxe and $35,500 goal. He also wants to do his own fulfillment. I think I'll wait for him to successfully fund and fulfill a project before ever pledging for one.

He's making progress, but a first time funder going for $35,500? Ain't gonna happen if he had the best design we'd ever seen. These are definitely an improvement, and I agree that the courts vary widely. I love consistency, so why does every other court have a suit indicator except the QoC? Because it gets in the way of her flower? Sorry, maybe just an oversight? (edit: probably is an oversight, since I noticed that it's the only card shown without a suit indicator mid-way across the top and bottom of each card, also)

The other thing is that the courts are all over the place design-wise, too. I like that QoS as noted above, but the QoD looks odd and both QoC & QoH just look sickly - or something. MetalLuxe seems to be the 'upgrade' for 2016, but it's going to kill this project, for certain. $20,000 maybe? That's hopeful. $35,500? That's hopeless.

As much pre-campaign promotion as he did, seeing it floundering here only three hours in certainly isn't a good sign. At least he used realistic fonts for the indices, though IMHO those could use a little (50%?) increase to eat up some of the white space. I do like the filigree background on all cards, though it's hard to see unless you have the display turned the right way.

Now, speaking to the planning and timing, IF this successfully funds (over $35,500), the final day is March 2nd. Add 16 days for Stripe to collect, sit on and finally disburse the funds, you're at March 18th. He even states that MetalLuxe cards take a little while to get done in the "Risks and Challenges", how's he going to deliver them in June? I won't even go into the self-fulfillment, because sure - it makes you a few more dollars, but for your first campaign, without any prior experience doing massive parallel shipping to US and overseas, it's just insane that he would try, much less state that it's better (for him, true, for backers, it's killed more campaigns post-funding than any other problem, including a couple of famous designers that are still self-fulfilling projects a year to 20 months later). Just doesn't make sense. I have a hard and firm policy of advising artists to truly figure out the worst case "estimated delivery" month, and add two to allow for the factory being slack, miscommunications between the artist and the production facility, general increase in the bandwidth being forced through the pipes that haven't increased their production capabilities in years, now, etc. As I have said before "nobody cares is you deliver early". Everybody cares if you're two / four / six months late - or worse.

Just my opinion, I'll go back to my corner, now. I don't know squat about playing card deck projects...

Watching a video about MetalLuxe was blinding me. These cards will look good with it but yea, the funding is too high for one deck. When I pledge for KS decks, I don't even look at the delivery month any more.

Lazy naming though.
I hope he puts out an Embossed deck in his series of "Decks named after features" series. Then he can put out the Two Way Back Deck!

Unfortunately this was a borderline case for me and Metaluxe was the deal maker. With that element being dropped from the impending relaunch I don't think I'll be repledging...

So the decks name is Foil and currently it does not have any foil? The foil comes only through stretch goals apperantly.

He changed the courts to a more standard looking courts that have recolored with metallic inks. I do like that black border on white cards look, I don't think that has been used that much. At the top of my head I can only think of seeing it before in Le Chat Rouge. So that is a nice thing about this deck.

With those recolored courts this deck gives me Elite deck vibes. Well, could be worse.

No, you don't have to give it to him. When he listens to experienced people, takes his time and is realstic then maybe give it a shot. But honestly, that's about 5 years down the road folks. Facts of life.

Like I may or may not have said before, I think that back has some serious potential. It's too bad he fires out KS campaigns like a shotgun hoping one will hit. If he just spent a little more time developing this concept it might be successful. Like the saying goes, "how can we miss him if he's never gone?"

The aces look good as they did last time.

The courts are again horrible.

Why is this deck called FOIL when there isn't any, you know, FOIL IN THEM???

He might get this funded if we would maybe use some of that foil and make the court cards Elite style - Standard with recoloring and "fancy stuff" added.

And he's back again with a super low goal and already funded. This reeks of pure desperation to get a project funded.

It's a nice design, don't know if MPC does foil on back. Impressions series? And for that price? We'll see!

I asked MPC recently about foil, and they told me they don't offer that option for custom projects. (as you say they must have the possibility to do it as it is the major feature of one of their house decks.)

Though the title does say foil, there is nothing in the project description to indicate that there will be any foiling on the cards themselves...seems a little like a bait and switch to me

In literature, a foil is a tool used to flummox the protagonist. For example, if the protagonist ordered foil-backed cards for the purpose of having a sweet, sweet card party, and they arrive without any foiling, he's been foiled.

So I guess if this is funded, the backers of this will receive their cards and immediately exclaim

"Curses, foiled again!"
