Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
Hi guys (and Gals),
Our ideas for this deck is slowly coming together and my partner and friend, the very talented Aran De Baron (made him blush) is working like a mad man. We are still figuring things out and would very much like some early input. (http://www.arandebaron.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
We are hoping to produce a deck of cards that will appeal to the collector and the player and your brutally honest feed back will go a long way toward helping us achieve this goal. The first picture is the Ace of Harts, the patterns around the edges are not quite right and we may be changing them for something a bit more "blocky" and brutish and we need to play with the aspect ratio (center pieces vs border designs)
The other drawing are preliminary sketches of what will hopefully become 2 of the Kings a Queen and the Jester the Ace of Diamonds and what I believe should be part of the card back design (the boar)
We really want to make something awesome and with your input I'm sure we can actually do it.
Cheers

Re: Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
Looks very interesting, but if you want to make them for game play you need to use more readable fonts. The faux aged paper look is also a controversial one. In addition, the tuck and card back are critical to success.
The art and concept looking good, I'll be watching.

Hi ecNate
Thanks for the great feedback. We were wondering why you consider the faux aged paper controversial? We thought that it fits in nicely with the dark and brutish theme we are trying to create, these are not your average garden variety dwarf after all, they would as soon rip your heart out than spit on you, (exhibit A, A of Hearts) not the kind of dwarf that would be comfortable living on a lily white back ground, (Just teasing) we would love to hear your reasoning.
Regards

Re: Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
Sorry if I wasn't clear, I just mean quite a few people don't care for it because they think it looks cheap and is a technique over used about 10-15 years ago and has lasting negative impressions on a number of people. If done right and subtle effect often times it goes over better. Personally it's not a huge deal to me, but in this case think it could be more subtle. There's also the fact that if it goes to the edge you can see it in a stack and thus if evenly applied one could reverse a card and find it in a stack just by looking at the edge of the deck. If not applied evenly it could lend itself to marked card use.

Ok, I get you. We will keep that in mind. Also maybe see how it will look with a border instead going all the way to the edge.

Re: Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
Taking some of the feed back on board, Aran changed the font. We have also gone for a stone background instead, may or may not stick with it. Also looking at wood and still thinking about the paper one. We've also moved away from a full bleed. The design is still missing the border elements

Here is the current incarnation for the Ace of Diamonds, we though about the fact that it may look more like a ruby than a diamond. But all or at least most Diamonds in the card playing world have always been red so they must all be Rubies...

Greatly appreciate the overwhelming feedback. I am the artist/illustrator of the design. I thoughts Dwarves are so overlooked with regards to their culture, style and appearance! There will be more characters appearing soon. Mini Sketchbook half full.
Thank you for your support

Re: Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
Progress is being made on all fronts, our blog is up and running and starting to take shape very nicely in my humble opinion. Aran delivered Ace of clubs last night and I'm very happy with it.
https://thefourcornerscards.wordpress.com/ For the indices on this one we used the club silhouette with a spike driven through it, we tried it with 2 spikes, to make it look more like the traditional clover club but did not like it all that much, let us know what you think.

Re: Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
Nice, but can you try and use less white inside the thin borders of the pips? Also, can you show what the hearts and diamonds would look like with a thin red border vs a thin black border?
A deck a day helps keep the addiction at bay!

Thank you for the great feedback up to now, here is a look at the Aces we think they are just about done but as with anything in life there probably will be more changes. We hope you enjoy these, we have had a lot of fun creating them. Any comments, advice or critique is most welcome.

Re: Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
Very nice! My only concern is that the spades and clubs outline in pips is the same, only a smal diagonal line differentiate them. Can be confusing.
Other than that, design is really cool!

This deck aren't playable. It's a hybrid art on a card with playing cards as an afterthought.

Just an update to show out progress and hopefully get some more feed back, so far the response has been great. Thank you for all the help and ideas. the background in not final and we are still playing with the sepia.

Would love to see the indices not have the suit be negative space with the smear of black/red behind it, I might also recommend that removing the 'nested art-suit' from the aces would clean them up a lot. I'm not a fan of the textured background and think the artwork would pop more without it, the art is amazing and absolutely sells itself, and I would gussy up the AoS, I think that would appeal to the traditionalists a little more and I also love me my fances AoSs
Despite the above tinkering ideas I absolutely love this deck, and think with some minor tweaking is going to be a solid deck addition to any collection and I can't wait to see more
Jackson completely revolutionized the way I waste money...

Re: Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
I would say NO. YOu are trying to read the index of the indices as fast as possible. If you force ppl to read the background color, to find out if it's a heart or spade that causes more time.

Must say I am looking forward to seeing this deck live.
Any chance the thumb on the hand print could not be cut off at the edge though? Its the first thing I saw and it very distracting and hard not to "un-see".

Not to mention if it bleeds to edge of card that you can see it from the edge of a stacked deck or in somebody's hand, impacts play-ability that way. I also like the art work though, looking forward to seeing more and will be considering it when it is available or launches if on KickStarter.NCarter wrote:Must say I am looking forward to seeing this deck live.

Re: Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
You are very right, I picked up on the fact that it was cut off on the side after I posted the previous images, we were unfortunately not using the printers template to make sure the card actually works as a playing card. I've fixed it up some but it may need some more work.

Re: Dwarfs First time around, early art work.
I'm really cutting back on decks, but if the price and quality are right I think I'll be in on this one. The theme is fun and art well done, plus I like the alternate pip style, yet you keep the traditional pip indices through the use of a hand print which adds to the theme, but still helps maintain play ability. usually I would say all pips should match, but this works.

We are very happy to hear you like our deck, We've been working on it for a while now, and the things you said are exactly what we were aiming for, Thank you. We are currently finding printing quotes, working out shipping options and going over the art and design with a fine tooth comb. the Tuck box is also not final yet and I'm building the Kick-starter page. Please spread the word, we hope to launch soon.

Yes we have made the required adjustments by reducing the card design to suit the perimeter.
Thank you for your valued feedback and input. We have been on this design since Christmas last. We are both looking forward to releasing this on a global scale. We will keep you all posted

On behalf of Christo and I, we cannot contain ourselves with this unique and prestige deck of cards to share to the world. I have been working on the designs since last Christmas and with the help and guidance of applicable blogs and my business partner, Christo, we have created something awesome ... sorry, a biased comment.
Christo is by no means cutting back on quality. We have consulted with anyone that deals with cards on a professional level. Kickstarter makes it quite clear ... 'if you think they are not ready then they are not ready for the world'. Wll after this length of time ... we are confident that we are ready.
We will keep you posted on the soon release
Many thanks

We think our tuck box is just about ready, the Bicycle logo is just a place holder and will be replaced by the logo of the company we decide to go with, or with the "Aran De Baron" logo. let us know what you think. Cheers
