It's one thing if it's a PR deck acquired from the Halloween promo...I get it...that's what people do. But a genuine gift as a token of appreciation for being a friend or loyal customer...not a good feeling.
Not rude at all. By all means I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I know inflection is a hard thing to convey through words and my posts are definitely not intended to be as harsh as they may seem. Apologies if anything hit too close.

I definitely see the value of a gift. There are a few really special items that will never leave my collection at least while I'm alive.
It's definitely disheartening to gift something to someone, or sell and trade it for a very affordable price, only to immediately have them go sell it. That's happened to me quite a few times. But that's on them. And that's the reality of this hobby. Some people don't appreciate something like that and try to see how much they can get for it.

But you can't deny the power of those PRs. Even when they're essentially tuck swaps with the standards. At least give me that. It's very commendable you're adding them for no additional cost. But that's why you have them on the high level tiers and they're always the first to go. While some may be happy to finally add them to their special collection, a good chunk are happy they'll make some good money with them. There's no denying that.

My two cents is that a mistake was made.

An honest mistake, though, of the "hmm. Didn't think that through" kind of mistake as opposed to a "ah, my nefarious plan has been uncovered" mistake.

I do believe that the personal reserve was exactly that. Meant to be offered as a measure of genuine appreciation to people who have shown kindness, appreciation or even just trust.

Then on top of that, having Kickstarter mess up to make the situation even more complicated. (I'll miss not having the PRs but I also don't regret having given them up.) I'm sorry for Chris it has taken the turn it has. He's one of my three current "sight unseen" designers and I value the genuinely beautiful art he's creating.

What am I missing, how are they the same price? $80 for 4 deck w/collector's box, $165 for the same thing + PR set. Yes it might be below market, but it's certainly not free. I woke up at 1AM to get one, gone before the page loaded. Never ever doing that again.

My bad. I was going with what SpecialK said. Hadn't seen the tiers very well. So the PRs do come with a price and they're not exactly gifted in those tiers. So now I wonder what Chris was saying about gifts and tokens of appreciation.

Bah, I'll just move on to other things. I have no horse in this race.

Never said they were "free" and my use of the term "gift" was different then in the sense of a freely given gift; more in the sense of a tier including them being a gift to backers.

In general, its the whole not being forced to buy more to get one; rather, here you go, I've priced it, good luck. In the original campaign a red PR was $10 bucks. Seriously, 10 bucks. Go look at the tiers. They were even included with an early bird set, not just the super high tiers. So opportunities were there.

And I won't speak for Chris, but his use of gift seemed more traditional as he has given them out with the exception of the promo and the gamesters campaigns.

Anyways, to each their own. I see absolutely nothing nefarious.

A gift or a present is an item given to someone without the expectation of payment. The gifted item should not be owned by the recipient. Although gift-giving might involve an expectation of reciprocity, a gift is meant to be free.

Just gonna leave that Wiki definition there before signing off from this matter. Surely you can understand why I gravitated towards that interpretation. Even if I rambled a little on his intentions with the PRs, my main focus (or at least my attempt at focusing the rambling) was towards what to expect from collectors and rarities.

Anywho, I've said what I needed to say. Not everything may be completely accurate but you get the gist of it. Hope this didn't drive Chris away.

Eoghann, completely understood. I just didn't want anyone else to misconstrue what I meant by gift.

And I agree with your point on collectors and rarities. We all do it and we're all subject to it. Part of the fun! Though there are quite a few "ultra rare limited" decks now, and let's face it - now a day it's 99% artificial. Maybe in 50 years it won't be, but for now, they are.

I think I need an assistant to keep up with all the the emails, kickstarter messages and forum posts haha.
Eoghann wrote:So the PRs do come with a price and they're not exactly gifted in those tiers. So now I wonder what Chris was saying about gifts and tokens of appreciation.
Just to clear a couple things up...the PR's on Kickstarter weren't really labeled as free gifts...the free gift PR's were in the Halloween Promo and to those who I've simply given decks to. The PR's were of course an incentive to back the Gamesters but the truth is, they were only included in the campaign in the first place as a way of offering PR's to those who wanted a chance to own them. Basically...ask and you shall receive. Same thing with the Golds in the LE campaign...received many emails asking if I'd ever offer Golds...and so I did.
Eoghann wrote:But you can't deny the power of those PRs. Even when they're essentially tuck swaps with the standards. At least give me that.
I mean no harm at all....just wanted to make some cards. You're absolutely right about the power of the PR's...but that is something I've learned...and certainly did not expect.

I hope we can all move on from this and switch the discussion somehow to something a bit more cheerful perhaps. Although I'm very pleased with the success of the LE campaign...it's been a pretty rough 24 hours responding to the comments, emails and messages (and forums) and I don't think I can make any further comments on the issue except to say it's early in the year and I have plans to release more PR's in the near future.

Thank you to all those who have supported the Whispering Imps in the past and to all those who continue to do so.

I, for one, am looking forward to the LE's. I like shiny.

And even though the point became moot within a split second of the project going live, I carefully evaluated whether I wanted to attempt to pony up the extra bucks for the PRs and came to the decision that they weren't where I'd prefer to allocate my funds at this time. That said, I'm not grumpy that they were offered, lottery-style. :)

Looking forward to your future releases!

UPDATE: All packages have been shipped out to backers of the Standard & Limited Edition Gamesters Kickstarter campaigns! Phew. Was a crazy busy weekend packing and shipping with Art of Play, but we did it.

I plan to launch remaining decks on http://www.WhisperingImps.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; this weekend.

I don't remember where I read it, but the box set includes every edition of the Whispering Imps as well as a version only attainable by purchasing said box.

I'd have to sell my gold version to fund it. Oddly enough though, when I tried selling a red private reserve on ebay I had no takers. The card market sure can be odd sometimes.

Are these really worth the $400 dollars?

And what does private reserve really mean (I seriously never understood it)? Since it seems like private reserve decks are being sold everywhere (not specifically Whispering Imps).

Considering the gold PR version sells on eBay for around $300 by itself, I'd say so.

And if your a true collector, price doesn't really matter for a one-of-a-kind item.

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic about the Private Reserve btw, I'm still pretty new to playing cards collecting.

My impression is that PR decks are the decks artist or production company that they keep for themselves and are not to be sold (maybe used for promotion or other purposes). However that doesn't seem to be the case since I do see people selling them quite often? If so, what does "private reserve" really mean?

Sorry for the noob question.

It's all about the buzz words, baby.

Not to take a dig at Chelko because pretty much everyone does it. Private reserves are typically the standard deck with a tuck swap/different seal or added trinkets. Keeps collectors happy because they got their hands on something "rare" and keeps the designer happy because he gets rid of all the surplus, giving him a clean slate to start other projects.

I am not quite as cynical as all y'all when it comes to private reserves. My understanding is that CC had a batch here and there just made for himself, and he decided to shake a few loose for the collectors when it made sense for him to do so, and then he went on to new batches, and round and round it goes. Like many of you, I'm sure his decision to shake a few of those private decks loose was influenced by the fact that some people were willing to pay a pretty penny for them, but I really don't think he sat around scheming about all of the riches he would rake in if only he prepared a recolored batch for the sole purpose of designating them "rare." I doubt he has made enough on his private reserve decks to rival Mr. Trump in his bid for the US Presidency.

That being said, I do likes me some green-backed decks, but I'm not inclined to part with quite that many green-backs in my wallet to get me a couple. It's a pity; had they been offered along-side the reds and the blacks, I'd certainly have ponied up to buy more of the greens than the others. But, I'm not up for quiiite that much extra cash to fly out the door. I tip my hat to Mr. Chelko for picking what looks like an excellent shade of green to entice the card collecting enthusiast in me, but I'll nonetheless have to sit out for this particular round. "Too rich for my blood." Alas.

I do like the Whispering Imps I've picked up so far, and I'm sure I'll pick up more down the road, but I'll do so when the price is right, and no hard feelings in the meantime. :-)

Sorry, I didn't mean to disrespect anyone, this could probably be another thread all by itself. But as I've really been collecting for like a year, there are some things I'm just not yet familiar with. I did do a search on UC to try and figure out what "private reserve" really mean (I figured someone would have the same noob questions that I have). The reason is I am really interested with this Wooden Box collection and was trying to figure out if it was worth pay $400 for.

But it got more confusing as I found some stuff on the old threads.
The Private Reserve decks were printed in response to the Original & Special Edition decks being completely sold out and with the intent to remain a true, private reserve. Never to be sold and for the private use of those who have acquired them.
I really like the Whispering Imps or else I wouldn't be considering paying $400 for the set. But I guess my question is more across the board than just the Whispering Imp reserves.
