Gorilla Deck Bicycle Playing Cards

Unread post by albinodragon »

We're on the fence about doing this Kickstarter or not.

The plan is to do a one time printing of 1,000 decks to get the design out into the world since it was one we really liked but it never reached funding.

Is this something anyone would be interested in? If so, how many decks and what country?

See the Kickstarter preview link here.

The only thing I still don't like are the faces on the number cards.

I liked this one, and backed it, if I recall correctly.

I'd pick up three if printed by USPCC, probably a couple more if EPCC. Depending upon price, of course.

I would definitely pick up a couple of these decks, though I would have to agree with Bikefanatic that the faces on the number cards are not that appealing

Definitely be in for 3 with the current setup. I believe I originally backed for more, but with current exchange rates it's hard to justify that now :( My postage would be to US.

Probably wouldn't bother if it changed to another printer (as it so obviously fits with the Rider back style)

My original pledge was for $58 and a half a brick. Unfortunately, the prices have gone up! :(

I'd be willing to go for 3 decks at the current prices. Keep the same prices as before, I'm in for half a brick. I really like these cards.

A fancy tuck case doesn't interest me. Kings Wild recently has been going with the fancy tuck and add-on display decks. That is also the most appealing system for me. What happened to the days of getting custom decks for around $10? :(

Shipping to America.

Honestly i would love to see this deck made, not at that price point. This wont become a deck full of bells and whistles, and it doesnt need to.

Double seconded. I would also add that yes- it doesn't need to but the price should reflect it...

Re: Gorilla Deck Bicycle Playing Cards

I LOVED this deck and is one of my top failed projects so I've been eagerly awaiting this. The play on the rider back is simply awesome and it's just a fun deck to collect and play with.

$15 for a single deck that has no special embellishments and doesn't have any movie licensing fees? Come on now, that's insane, even if the justification is shipping and small USPCC run. This should be $12 or $13 tops. I pledged for quite a few on the original run, but with this price at most a single deck. If the price is reasonable then probably 2. If you do Gremlins pricing of $12 for one and $20 for two I think this may do better than you think.

I for one really like it when number cards have unique elements and like the faces, but it is way too distracting currently. I would suggest making it more subtle and a much lighter shade so it appears more like a slight watermark than an in your face background design.

BTW - KickStarter previews never fully work on my phone, no matter what browser I use (Chrome or Samsung Internet app). The menus don't work to see the prices and other sections, just the main content.

Wouldn't be my first choice of deck but if you stuck to USPCC & a limited print run then I may pick up a couple.
Unlikely to back them otherwise.

If this deck was NOT produced which deck is next on the agenda?
Perhaps if we knew of an alternative then people may be swayed one way or the other!! :D

Everyone gave a solution/suggestion about the price of the deck by lowering cost or making it limited.

My two suggestions about the number cards are these:

The pips alone with nothing can work fine.

The bananas in the corners on the card backs could be used to be placed in the center of the number cards instead of the big gorilla faces. To have a small, two way banana design would look good and it'll define the deck of it's theme.

We would take 72 if EPCC and 144 if Bicycle Branded.

I think the argument for USPCC vs. all else is moot. The back design is clearly a moderation of the Bicycle 808 back and should only be printed by USPCC accordingly. If the only way to lower the price is to switch printing companies (which I highly doubt BTW...) then I vote not to make it at all. Or at least you won't have my pledge at $15 per deck.

Never been a big fan of this one, especially at that price point. This deck does not justify $15 a deck, maybe $7-8 each. You guys should focus on something a bit more elegant looking.

I have to agree with the others. At $15 I might get one but even this would be a hard sell. I see this as a working deck, one I would want to use regularly, not an art deck to be admired and placed on display. At $10 or less per deck, I could justify getting two. The faces on the number cards don't bother me that much but I agree that subtler would be better. I think higher production numbers and lower price might be the ticket for this deck.

I liked this deck also about a year ago. I agree, it should have been made. I believe that full heartily, but made by Albino Dragon? Be careful, Gamblers Warehouse has been known to help people make a product into reality. Do you want to be known for that? I sense they like this deck also...

Nice art, for sure, but again not sending outside the US. I see you are asking for interest outside the US, but it's difficult to get a clear sample of that population either here or in UC. True there's people from Australia, UK and Asia, but the vast majority are from the US.
So it's a shame when a project says "shipping only to the US", but you probably knew that before. I can see the logic in previous projects with copyrights difficulties, but in this one, I fail to understand the reason, other than convenience, which I can't argue against besides saying that you are missing a part of this community.

Every deck I open makes your sealed one more valuable. You're welcome.

If it doesn't fund, and you decide to print on your own (I really hope this get printed) I don't know if you would consider another printer. They cards are too good never to see the light of the day.

I don't know why more people don't look at MPC. I made my own cards, and they turned out pretty good. I used their 310 gsm linen finish. No complaints.

Recently, they have come out with 330 gsm superior smooth finish. Printing 1000-2499 decks is only $3.30 per deck. There's a lot of room for profit there and would keep the costs down. I'm not sure how the compares to USPCC, Legends or EPCC, but the turn around is much faster than all 3 companies and their own decks that have come out have been really good recently.

They didn't have any. I made 108 cards using their 310 gsm linen finish.. They turned out really well. I'm not a cardist though.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

We probably won't be making the deck since it seems like there simply isn't enough interest to get the numbers we need to even break even (let alone actually make any money on the project).

Here is a more in-depth look at why: http://albinodragon.com/blog/gorilla-de ... on-making/

That sucks, are you sure? I would be OK with another printer, even if it means another back. Couldn't you at least give it a try on Kickstarter?

If nothing else, sell the design to gamblers warehouse so you can break even on investment so far and the deck gets made.
