Re: Grinders Playing Cards - coming soon from Midnight Cards
This makes me wish it was possible to print borderless cards with perfect registration. These would be incredible without the white borders.
Even with them though, this looks like another slam dunk for Randy. I barely buy decks anymore due to financial reasons, but this will most likely be one of the lucky few

Thanks for posting about it CBJ!
I posted a Render of the Tuck on Instagram this morning, so I might as well show it here also.

Randy - I looks like your going with a center element with 4 corner badges. I'm so tired of circles being the corner badges. Your design is refreshing. Only suggestion I can give is beat that white border back. Try to make it as thin as possible.

The orange/red background reminds me of the orange Spitfire Draconian backs.

I like it except for the name which makes me think of Grindr.

Re: Grinders Playing Cards - coming soon from Midnight Cards
I thought about that when I picked the name, but a Grinder is a very common term in the gambling world - especially Poker (http://www.poker-king.com/dictionary/grinder/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).PrincessTrouble wrote:I like it except for the name which makes me think of Grindr.
It was almost a given that it would eventually be used someday on a Deck. I wanted to use it before Daniel Madison snatched it up and put it on some super minimal design!! The Grinders design has some subtle imagery references to Poker and Roullette. Roullette is my favorite Casino game, and it also has players that are considered to be Grinders (people who play smart and conservatively, and make a living from it).
Adding the s to the name was my way of hoping it would separate it more from the Grindr term.
Thanks, Randy

Re: Grinders Playing Cards - coming soon from Midnight Cards
That middle design element is memorizing, the more I stare at it the more it seems to move on its own! A bit too frilly and doily-like for my tastes, but I'll be keeping an eye on this. Will it use variations of traditional court style or fully custom?
My first thought was skateboarding or maybe organ grinder. Never knew about the poker term, not gonna even comment on the missing 'e' definition...

I didn't know about that poker term either. Thanks for explaining it, Randy. My second thought after Grindr was coffee bean grinders. I was looking for little coffee beans in your patterns. LOL

Hasn't any of you seen the movie Rounders?MagikFingerz wrote:I was thinking of something like this as well, although more along the lines of... "herbal" grindersPrincessTrouble wrote:My second thought after Grindr was coffee bean grinders. I was looking for little coffee beans in your patterns. LOL

It's one of the best Poker movies ever made, and there's a lot of talk in it about Grinders and their lifestyle.
Thanks, Randy

Re: Grinders Playing Cards - coming soon from Midnight Cards
Sorry Randy, didn't really mean that in a disappointed or condescending way (although the eyeroll smiley didn't help, I suppose). I don't think it's a bad thing that people associate it with different things, as long as none of them have negative connotations. If you can market it to people using Grindr; why not? Same with pot heads, coffee drinkers, or people working with gears (idk, watchmakers?). Hell, maybe even Family Guy fans

Re: Grinders Playing Cards - coming soon from Midnight Cards
Hey Magikfingerz,
I didn't think of the comments as a negative at all. I was just surprised nobody had heard the Poker meaning for a Grinder!
The reason I'm keeping the theme's imagery subtle is because I'm thinking of this as my T11 style design. The semi-custom Courts are based on an old-school Courts set, but I'm giving them a nice makeover and added details. The goal is to have an extremely playable design.
Thanks, Randy

Randy,
The first thing I thought of was the movie Rounders. One of my all-time favorite movies. We use the term grinder on the golf course a lot too, but Poker players was my first thought. Can't wait to see more.

Re: Grinders Playing Cards - coming soon from Midnight Cards
Grinder is also a term used in BlackJack. It's a person who makes the same base bet every time. This was before they had reshuffle machines when they had 6-8 decks in a shoe. I used to count cards at BlackJack. (2-6) was +1, (7,8,9) was 0. After a while you don't see them. They are invisible. They don't count. Courts and Aces were -1. As a rule, if you were in the negative you made your basic base bet. When I was +10, I would double my base bet. That means a lot of low cards have been played. When you get above positive 10 you were suppose to divide the number of decks in the shoe. Lets say I was at +20 which doesn't happen often. And I looked at the shoe and their were about 4 decks left. If my base bet is $25 dollars, 20 / 4 = 5. So, $25 times 5 would be $125 for my next bet. You have to be consistent in BlackJack.
My best haul was in 2003 when I made 15 grand in one night. Now they have reshuffle machine and it sucks... Randy that is a nice back. Can't bitch about anything.

Yea, 6 to 5 is becoming the norm. Steer clear of that. Insurance is a joke unless you have 20 then it might be a good bet...vasta41 wrote:Not at Foxwoods in CT! Here's a look at a couple of the Courts. They're semi-custom, based off of an older set of Courts. I've definitely added some flair to them though!
The Kickstarter will launch sometime in the next week or two.

Re: Grinders Playing Cards - coming soon from Midnight Cards
Grinder is also an ice hockey term for a player with does the dirty work along the boards, plays defense and plugs away. Every team needs a bunch of grinders to do the dirty work for the superstars. In some parts of Canada, they are known as "Sutters".RandyButterfield wrote:I thought about that when I picked the name, but a Grinder is a very common term in the gambling world - especially Poker (http://www.poker-king.com/dictionary/grinder/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).PrincessTrouble wrote:I like it except for the name which makes me think of Grindr.

I think they look good overall. Minor critique is that the red for the background of the Jack and the red heart are too close in color.RandyButterfield wrote:Here's a look at a couple of the Courts. A light orange background with the red pips could do.

The Grinders Kickstarter will be launching this Friday at Noon EDT!!
I played around a LOT with the Red PIPS / Red Background for the Courts.
They're at the contrast I thought looked the best for the overall design.

I'm just racking my brain trying to figure out the original source of those courts. I know Onida used them and they look great. Are they based off an old design?

I got them from Legends. They're more of an old-school Courts Set. I think the Serpentine Deck used them also.Eoghann wrote:I'm just racking my brain trying to figure out the original source of those courts. I know Onida used them and they look great. Are they based off an old design?

The Grinders KS campaign will consist of only 3 elements - the Deck, an Antique Copper Finish Coin, and a custom Brick Box. The Brick Box will use the same Black matte stock, Copper Foil AND Silver Foil as the Deck itself! Even with a double Foil Brick Box, the price of the Brick tiers are very affordable.
