Looking good! I like that one as is but at the same time same a colorized version would be pretty sweet as well.

Kinda like what Ultimate Universe did. :)

Looks nice, but a deck inspired by Indiaand it's high society needs a lot of color, a mean like the all spectrum!

I dig the pips and the courts but like everyone here is saying, without color they resemble T11's Sentinels, to me anyway.

To me, you take some elements of the Monarchs tuck, then mix the whole thing up with Misc. Goods and memento, and there you have it.

Nailed it!

I want to like this, especially the tuck, but I just can't. I agree adding color would help a whole lot, but this theme just doesn't really appeal to me personally to begin with for some reason. For the right price and with some added color and confirmation of sweet embossing and foil on the tuck, maybe?

I like it! good job
and I also like that there are no round corners... a bit of variation. Might be tricky to keep them safe and to put them in the tuck. :) but I like it.

Yep, I noticed, but didn't comment.

That kind of begs the question, since he indicates that the printer is USPCC, AFAIK they don't have a non-chamfered card punch - and the cards would be really difficult, if not impossible to keep from banging up the corners. There's a good reason that they do that. I have never seen a vintage deck made before they rounded corners that didn't have gimme corners, unless they were never used. I guess "chamfered" is not exactly the right word, meaning more beveled or cut rsther than rounded.
.
When people post preview pix or renderings, I don't really expect them to be exactly as shown in the final version.

Kings of India playing cards

Unread post by humble raja »

Hello - this is our first deck and it will be on Kickstarter within a few weeks. The concept is all in the name - India has a very interesting history and we thought this would be a great way to reveal some of its greatest characters. The deck features India's 4 most influential dynasties using the Kings, Queens and successors (as the Jacks) as the courts and incorporates details taken from artifacts, architecture and stories from their time. For those familiar with Indian history, our chosen dynasties are: Maurya, Gupta, Chola & Mughal.

We are designing all custom court cards, all 4 aces and custom pips. The backs & Jokers are in the works (still deciding if a full-bleed pattern back or a more illustrated back would suit these cards better). If funding is successful, we're looking to print with the USPCC (Bicycle grade with an intricate foil tuck). All feedback is welcomed!

More details about the deck until our launch can be found at humbleraja.com or Instagram @humbleraja

I really like the artwork. I am just wondering that India, a land of extremes, full of color, life, music and rich history and the cards are mostly black and white...?

The artwork is very good, but I think they should have color in them (or a colored deck as a stretch goal).

Hi, good point. I know colour is a big part of the culture, but this deck takes this on with a different design approach. We found that the all the small details get simplified into sections of colour and thought it would be interesting to create tones and densities using just 1 lineweight in black. This deck is hopefully the start of a new brand that takes on Indian culture in a non-traditional way through design.
Good idea as a stretch goal for a new deck altogether.

Really digging these cards! The detail is amazing. This deck reminds me a lot of the Misc Goods Co. deck, it has a very similar feel. This is not a bad thing!

humble raja - Don't let the court border define you. Your crowns and weapons can go outside the border. I notice your court border are not inline with the indices. That is a bad thing. Your indices are to tucked inward. Those indices are too safe...

@sprouts1115 - for the Jacks, I think we can afford to move the indices out, but for King and Queen, the letters are in the corner of our recommended frame. The USPCC's alignment isn't amazing so we decided to keep the crowns and accessories within the frame.

Merged the topic from the drafting board into this one.

Love the look of this BTW and the idea of a Holi deck as a stretch goal!

Hi everyone :)

Since we are taking on a very particular theme for the deck, it definitely won't appeal to everyone and we knew that going into it. This looked like a interesting way to share a bit of India's history, which is otherwise fairly unfamiliar in north america. So, for us this is the key element the deck was designed around.

As for color, I know it's a big part of the culture, but this deck takes this on with a different design approach. By keeping it to a single black linework, it makes for an interesting style but still allows for the card to be balanced with darks and lights using the detail's density. Having a colored version as a future edition is a very good idea and would make for a completely different deck. Thanks for the suggestions.

@Stockholm17 - the cards will have rounded corners. Those photos were of an earlier mock up. Our new mockups for the Kickstarter page are as close to the real thing as we could get them.

@ecNate - embossing would be amazing; it will be a stretch goal on Kickstarter but for now it's definitely in gold foil.

humble raja - Still think your indices are to safe. If you move them to the left in line with that court border if would look better. Right under the Diamond suit index. If you move the indices for the Jack you have to move all. The indices must line up.

I'm all for phallic symbols. If you can squeeze in a penis or a boob in a deck of cards, I'm all for it.

This is a serious bummer. Was anticipating this project, and got there really early. No early bird for one deck, ok. But 17$ for EU shipping? More than the cost of the deck? I am already used to paying more for shipping, but this is too much. I am sure it can be done better, we have enough experience with other projects to know it can be lower.
Good luck, but, as much as I regret it, I can't be part of it.

Hello,

Shipping is working out pretty crazy for small deck quantities. We are running the campaign out of Canada, but ordering and shipping the decks out of the US. This helps a bit, but only becomes economical when shipping around 4 decks. I can't compete with the US Kickstarter campaigns because they don't have a very disadvantageous exchange rate to work around.
Your feedback is really appreciated - I made a small change to the Int. shipping for a deck.

Nice start to the campaign. Thanks UC backers! :)

YOu're new and you have a good theme. I still think since you are using USPCC as the printer the indices can be a bit more in the top left corner. You are too safe defiantly....

At the court border would be great. It would work... So what kind a weapon is the JoD holding? :D You have a good deck.

Hi, I just want to let you know I convinced 8 other people to get a deck, so I'm a backer now. Working to get to the brick, but the deck will benefit from a two way back.
