British Monarchy by Lux Playing Cards - Now Live on KS

Unread post by Cellar Window »

Hello Friends,

I'm new here at United Cardists although i've been lurking about for a week now haha. I also just started designing decks early last year and this will be my second deck. I'm working with Bryan of Lux Playing Cards on this and I just wanted to show you guys some of the stuff we came up with. I'm eager to know what you guys think of it. :D

Cheers!

Looking solid so far - nice back, decent colour scheme and some really nice court art

Are you using a different Royal house per suit (Tudor, Plantagenet, Stuart, Wessex etc)?

Questions:
Will the backs be printed in metallic ink?
Who will be printing these cards?
I love everything I see so far with the exception of too much blank space in the courts... maybe some subtle, transparent graphics/drawings in the background?

Very nice attention to detail on the backs! The borders if they can be kept that thin during printing will be amazing :D The pips on the court cards you've shown - they seem to be a bit low, but I understand that varies depending on preference. The tip of the spades seems to be a tad bit lower below the K compared to the diamond, but then again, might be just my bad eyesight

Still outstanding work!

I have one question, are your courts completely original or are they an adaptation from existing images ?

I don't mind it horribly much, but agree it could be so much better if done right. Just don't overdo it and please don't just draw a box around them. Use various elements to create a frame like structure, but don't just draw a frame and then fill it. ;)

Overall, I really like the direction these are taking. It would be the best so far from Lux in my opinion. I like the historic look, but fresh take. Bling it up though, metallic ink and foil/embossing on tuck and with a few other tweaks I'll be in.

Hello there!

Thank you for taking the time to comment montecarlojoe! :)
Although some of the well known houses will be part of it what Bryan really wanted was to portray famous/infamous British Monarchs who had a knack for conquest or are very influential at their respective time period. So basically it'll cover a very long time period from Alfred the Great 871-899 "King of Wessex" who led the Anglo-Saxon resistance against the Vikings to Queen Victoria 1837-1901 "House of Hanover" and the longest reigning female monarch in history. I hope this answers your question and also thank you for the compliments it really took a lot of time 'as with most projects' to do, cheers!

Hello vasta41!
As of this time it will stay the way it is. But that is a good idea, maybe i'll ask him to do that option as a stretch goal for this campaign. I think it would really look nice too.
This deck will be Tally-Ho. That means linoid finish and a very cool Ace of Spades design printed by USPCC, yay! haha
As for the courts, were trying to go with a "less is more" approach. We wanted it to have that clean look with the existing detailed illustrations of the court cards. But I will definitely give you a heads up if he ever wants that to change. Again thank you for the comment! :)

Hello Jaytayo2212,
Thank you! Haha I did go beyond the usual Copy Limit Line there no? but I think it is still distanced quite a bit from the Die (cut) Line :D . Lol you made me stare at it for a very long time, I even checked the registration marks I did on the original file if it was a bit of. Everything seems fine tho, sometimes our eyes do get deceived s'why I try to not "eyeball-it" :ugthink: and keep them designs on the registration marks haha. I really appreciate it, thank you!

Hello volantangel,

Some of the card illustrations will be original artwork "in a sense they all are" when there is little detailed historical reference to go on like the Jack of Spades which will feature Cnut the Great. On the other hand I try to reference existing paintings/etchings/monotype prints etc. and what clothes they would have worn during the time period so as to make them increasingly familiar with people who loves history/historical figures. I guess it leaves me with a quote from one of my favorite film director. :D

“It's not where you take things from — it's where you take them to.”

Haha i'm a bit of a design nut and i'll say that I will always try to distance my works from the conventional "border" specially if it doesn't compliment the work it is supposed to be bordering/framing. I did design some borders for this particular deck but somehow my gut says it doesn't feel right design-wise. And although the project is actually done and paid for I think i'll give it another shot pro-bono. That is why i'm here posting this at United Cardists anyway right? to get the feel of the people who loves anything playing cards. Haha thank you for the insight!

But i'll also take your word for it yeah? You'll be in if you're satisfied of the "bling" i'm going to try to put on it. haha  I'll upload revisions and see what you guys think of it. Again thanks!

I'm on the fence, the back design makes this look like a variation of a Blue Crown deck. The courts are nice, though.

While I'm happy this is a USPCC-produced deck, this statement makes me think either he doesn't think we know about USPCC stock and finishes, or he doesn't know about USPCC stock and finishes. . .

The courts remind me of the ones from the Bicycle Hundred Year War deck.

Hello, sorry that wasn't mean to sound arrogant. Like I said I just started card designing last year and i'm still pretty much learning the ropes on everything. I've been lurking here long enough to know that you guys are pretty much the crowd that are more experienced in these things than I am and that is why i'm reaching out to this community :) . The statement was for people who like me before when I started have absolutely no idea as to what the difference is with USPCC's stock and finishes. So i'm thinking that it really wouldn't hurt to impart a bit knowledge as well even tho I know most of you would already know about that.

Eoghann wrote:And that's the font Lorenzo used on Heretic. Wonder what it's called.
Hello Eoghann,

The font is called Eccentric. Lorenzo "stockholm17 on ig" saw my designs on instagram and was also the first person to give a very cool comment about my stuff. :)

Bikefanatic wrote:The courts remind me of the ones from the Bicycle Hundred Year War deck.
Hello there,

It does look similar I think because of the color palette. I choose gold in light of my previous work. In that one I used red accents on the court cards. I also did some gold foiling on the deck when the guy wanted it there. During the gold foil design process tho I really liked how it looked on the desaturated illustration, so that got me into thinking to use gold accents on this card project.

Really nice artwork but, I too would love to see a little additional design. Maybe a small half-border or something? I don't know. I just like intricate designs but, if you say it doesn't work then I respect your vision.

Just curious - can you explain the choice for the Joker?

The Tuckbox will be made by USPCC themselves. It will be a branded Tally-ho deck. The only artwork they'll be using on the tuckbox is the card back I did also included will is the logo for LUX and the title. They aren't giving out the main files to me when they edited it "says they can't". They only gave us a png of the tuckbox layout. I will post the tuckbox mockup once LUX has posted it tho.

I've never seen a Tally-Ho brand deck with a crown on the card back.
I guess this will be a first then. :) "not sure tho". USPCC are the ones who did the layout for the tuckbox, and they aren't letting me touch it even tho I saw some "crooked lines?" on the png they sent. But I am confident that they will fix those.

Thank you for that Dragon, I really appreciate it! I will try again tho.

The Jokers aren't really Kings or Queens but are still well known throughout history in their own way. This Joker loved the King of Diamonds but he had her beheaded, in short. haha

The art on the courts are fantastic, however the tally-ho branding just looks forced. It might be better off without the tally-ho branding, doesnt fit with the theme anyways.

Yeah, we had to ask USPCC if we could make a separate tuckbox without the tally-ho branding and finally in the last minute they agreed. So now I have to finish it real quick for approval haha.

Edit* I removed the file so that Lux can continue on their strategy on the campaign. :)

Honestly that looks like a print/painting on a wall, and not a tuckbox. There is still time to revise your tuckbox concept, and i sincerely hope you do.

Tally Ho's with a crown on the card backs... I am spun out.

Some in my Facebook group think the deck would be better with black borders/borderless, any thoughts on that?

I did a quick color fill for my personal amusement and have to respectfully disagree. I think the back as is quite nice. If it's full bleed black the diamonds along the border appear a little strange in my opinion.
